The Great Dao of Steve

As we know, Steve Yzerman, along with a handful of great superstar veterans have been struggling with this new NHL format. That being said, Detroit Red Wing captain; Steve Yzerman has a tough decision to make.

On the ice, his knee has been a pain, forcing him to ask for days off and raising serious questions about his ability to get through the season he usually plays less than 10 on most nights. Off the ice he is trying to wrestle with the emotional issue of precisely when is the right time to say he’s had enough.

But between the pain of his knee and the limited minutes he’s been getting from the Wings, the writing appears to be on the wall.

A lot of people are wondering when, or if, Yzerman will call Wayne Gretzky to pull himself from the Canadian Olympic team roster. Hey, I would say, with all due respect, that’s a foregone conclusion. What I wonder about is whether this is the week Stevie Y decides to call it a career.

Personally, as good of a career as he has enjoyed, I think his tenure on the Olympic squad has come to an end. He will do the right thing and take himself off.

Yzerman has had what many would call, an illustrious career, a native of Cranbrook, British Columbia, drafted 4th overall by the Wings in 1983, this 10-time NHL all-star has totalled 681 goals and 1048 assists in 1470 regular season games. To add to his list of achievments are 3 Stanley Cups, Conn Smythe Trophy, Lester B. Pearson winner and an Olympic Gold Medal as well as the longest serving captain in Detroit Red Wing history.

There is no doubt in my mind that he is one of the best players to ever dawn an NHL hockey jersey. If you are a fan of Steve Yzerman, I suggest to watch the next few Detroit Red Wing games, as it is in this writers opinion that any one of them could be his last.
