I agree, it is hard to say, but here's my piece...

Harvey was great, and was a core piece to Montreal's great teams of the 50's and 60's. Shore was the MVP of a Bruins team that wasn't a dynastic team, or a perrenial powerhouse. Shore is the only defenseman to win the Hart trophy 4 times, and he won those 4 Harts in the span of 6 seasons. Eddie Shore was Doug Harvey before Doug Harvey was around, and Doug Harvey was Bobby Orr before Bobby Orr was around. Also, Harvey won 8 Norris Trophies, yes. That is quite the feat. Red Kelly was the first to win the Norris in 54, I believe, and Shore retired from the NHL in 1940. Had the Norris been inducted as an NHL award for best defenseman during Shore's tenure, he'd have just as many, maybe more Norris awards.

I agree, but thing is with Tretiak, he was the stabilizer to the core. He held it together. Those Russians weren't "vaunted" without Tretiak. He was a brick wall in International competition, on a great team... yes, he played for a great team. Wanna know why it was great? He stopped almost everything that went towards the crease. Aside from 2 key moments in international hockey history (the obvious ones... '72 Summit Series & '80 Miracle On Ice), his brilliance is almost 2nd to none. Sure, they had a good defense, and had the dreaded line of Valeri Kharlamov, Boris Mikhailov, and Alexandr Yakushev, but they wouldn't have been a perennial powerhouse without Tretiak. He bested the NHL's best netminders for years in international play.

I almost did put Tretiak as my backup because of how great he was, but there's many NHL goalies that are at that level... Plante and Hasek have MVP's... Sawchuk, Esposito, Dryden, Brodeur, Glenn Hall... tough to only pick two.

Francis was a close call on mine. I love Ronnie Franchise, I just had no room for him. Hell, I left out Pat LaFontaine, and he's one of my top 3 favorites of all time.
