The top 10 reasons why Crosby snubbed Letterman invite
In yet another “how the NHL should capitalize on the Olympic viewership column, Artie Gigantino of the San Francisco Chronicle Examiner makes a few salient suggestions (loved the newspaper ad) and a few awful ones (1. Ban fighting; 2. ???? 3. Get Olympic ratings). But this idea definitely resonated:
Although the season resumed right away, allow two or three of them to appear on Leno or Letterman. That is worth its weight in gold, no pun intended. Drew Brees made the rounds after the Super Bowl, as did Derek Jeter after the World Series.
Worth its weight in gold … provided the guy with the gold is up for it. Larry Brooks of the NY Post wrote on Sunday that David Letterman’s show extended an invitation to Sidney Crosby(notes) when the Pittsburgh Penguins were in New York last week, and were denied.
What better way to examine this decision than with a Top 10 list, right?

Upon learning of the snub, Slap Shots was told that this wasn’t the first time Crosby, who last year declined to appear on NBC’s “Today” show following Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup victory, had rejected a request from Letterman’s “Late Show.”
We only can imagine the demands on Crosby’s time. Yet, in the days that hockey was front-page and back- page material after Canada gold, U.S. silver in overtime attracted more television viewers in the States than any game since the Lake Placid Miracle in 1980, it’s difficult to understand why the NHL’s most recognizable player and ambassador refused to spread the gospel.
Well, it’s not that difficult. But it is a bummer. So, from the home office in Cole Harbour, here are The Top 10 Reasons Sidney Crosby Declined the Letterman Invitation:
10. Crosby and other high-profile Olympians for the U.S. and Canada went beyond the call with the media and appearances for a few weeks, and once the last beaver was deflated at the Closing Ceremonies it was back to NHL business — especially for a guy with Crosby’s focus. So it’s understandable that he’s turned the page on the Olympics and that he’s probably exhausted by them, too.
9. Worried that Letterman would only leave him sloppy seconds on the cute staffers.
8. Crosby was worried about the bitter U.S. fans in a New York audience receiving him the same way the Ryan Miller loyalists did in ittsburgh.

I couldnt possibly care less (even if I tried) if any athlete ever goes on Letterman or Leno.
If they go, sweet. If not, meh, big deal.
Do I think they should? Sure, its good exposure for their respective sport. So, sure, Crosby should go on and get some exposure for the game to people that maybe dont know too much about it. But do I think he (or anyone else in any other sport) be obligated to? Not at all.
Good for Crosby. Letterman's an as$hole anyway.

that's why letterman is so awesome. the first thing i think about when i think of letterman is his interview with paris hilton after she was in jail and he kept pestering her about it. he's the best interviewer ever.

I don't like him because, for one thing, I'm a Leno loyalist, so I'm biased.
Also Letterman's put out an aggressive campaign to demonize Leno, but it's all because he knows Leno will f*ck him in the ratings when Leno comes back to his usual 11:35 time slot. Leno has ruled late night ratings since 1995. Letterman knows this and is trying to undermine Leno's character.
Plus, Letterman bashing Leno is nothing but hypocrisy…wasn't Letterman the guy who was involved in extra marital affairs? Before undermining other people's character, he should look at himself first.
I don't have a problem with Letterman's interviewing skills. See above.
Overall however, I find Leno way funnier. Leno's monologue alone is second to none. His Headlines feature only gets better with time.
But I have to admit, the Letterman interview with Paris Hilton is a classic.

yeah leno's monologue is the best and the headlines bit is awesome, but that's the writers. i think he writes himself too, but that's a joint effort.
looking at the key criteria for the big 3 letterman, leno, and throwing in conan (and why not as this is a hockey site afterall):

improvising: conan
crowd involvement: conan
monologue: leno
segments in between monologue and guest: leno
writing: leno
wit: letterman
likeability factor: conan
funniest overall: conan
so, i'd go 1. conan 2. letterman……………………3. leno

haha yeah that was great. i thought phoenix was doing some mockumentary and was using that bit as a part of it but i haven't heard anything about that lately.
I like the approach. Late-night talk show stats.
Letterman leads in shots. He's always taking shots at Leno. But Leno scores more. Higher ratings. lol
to Leafy, Jay Leno is a pathetic, whiney loser. Letterman is the king, but when Conan comes back (possibly with fox?) he will crush them both.

No surprise. Kimmel is in the same boat as Letterman. They both know Leno is a ratings powerhouse. Leno's return is bad news for both and they know it.
I heard that it was back and forth, and usually very close.
Either way, I never had anything against Leno until recently with all his whining, and now the baby is getting his way.
Ah, hey you were right, I looked it up. Overall Leno would consistantly beat Letterman from 1995 onward. However for males age 18-49 it was very back and forth and always close. The significance of that demographic is that its what NBC and CBS use to measure success, because that's what their late night advertisers are mostly geared towards.
I always liked Letterman better cuz he's a little more whacky and off beat. Leno is kind of tacky and obvious but Letterman will catch you off guard from time to time. Just my opinion 😉
