The Toronto Maple Leafs future

First of all now that the trade deadline is approaching more and more teams seem to be more interested in Sundin.

According to thefourthperiod.com the most resent team interested in Sundin are the Ducks. The Ducks are supposedly very interested in Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin, who has a no-trade clause, although the price tag would be high. Sources tell TFP if the Leafs agree to a deal, which Sundin would have to approve, they would want top-prospect Bobby Ryan and Edmonton’s 1st round draft pick as part of a package. Therefore if this happened the leafs would more than likely be a bottom 5 team as well as the oilers(now that horcoff is injuried for the season) leaving the leafs with two top 5 picks this coming draft.
Other than that tsn.ca is reporting that the leafs are one of the front running teams for Sweden elite league player Fabian Brunnstrom. In 41 games with Boras in Sweden’s second-tier league last season; he potted 37 goals and 73 points in just 41 games. This season, he’s continued his stellar play with Farjestad of the Swedish Elite League, scoring 33 points in 42 games. The Flyers, Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks also have all been rumored as possible destinations for next season for the rising young star.
J.P. Barry, who represents Brunnstrom, is also the agent for Mats Sundin. This is a huge plus for the leafs.
They than should get rid of players like Blake, Tucker, Bell, Kubina, Raycroft, and upcoming UFA’s Pohl, Moore, Belak and Wozniewski. Therefore with all that said IF these moves are made by the Maple Leafs their future is looking very good. Also, you never know, If Sundin is traded and when July comes around he very well might sign back with the leafs.
The leafs top young players and prospects will than look like this: Stajan, Steen, Wellwood, Colaiacovo, White, Ryan, Pogge, Stralman, Tlusty, Earl, Brunnstrom, Russian winger Kulemin(07/08 stats: 49GP 19G 9A 28Pts in Russian super league), Didomenico(leads the Q with 77 pts at 18 years old), and Russian defenseman Vorobiev(0708 stats: 47GP 15G 9A 24Pts in Russian super league) and also the player selected with the two top 5 pick in this up coming draft. This than looks like an excellent future for this organization.

Don't forget Ruegsegger, didn't anyone notice him at the World Juniors?

if the Leafs were able to get Anahiems 1st round pick from Edmonton and the Leafs finish 14th or 15th in the east, we have TWO top 5 picks depending on edmonton and toronto final games. It doesnt look good for Edmonton with their injuries mounting up and well the Leafs will never make a push simply because their too inconsistant. I personally would love Sundin to Anahiem for Ryan and Edmontons 1st pick. I doubt it will happen as Burke isnt in need to trade that pick for a rental player.

    NOTES:

    – Kulemin is probably the best Leafs prospect right now.
    – trade Kyle Wellwood to a team in need of a play making center. ie. Atlanta
    – Trade Kubina for a draft pick(s) if possible.
    – I don't think Burke will trade Bobby Ryan and Edmonton's first rounder. The Leafs could find a better deal elsewhere; Burke's offer won't compete with other offers throughout the league. This being said, I still don't believe Sundin will be traded.
    – Most likely players to be traded at the deadline are: Jason Blake, Ian White, Alexei Ponikarovsky (injured) and Hal Gill.
    – Raycroft will be waived by the end of the season or bought out in the offseason.
    – Darcy Tucker will never waive his NTC nor will Tomas Kaberle… Bryan McCabe unlikely.
    – Finally, Bell will finish out his contract as a Toronto Maple Leaf… unless, maybe Chicago is interested in his return? unlikely

    Kris Newbury

    Tomas Kaberle – Bryan McCabe

This version of the Toronto Maple Leafs would likely stuggle to make the playoffs but rebuilding the Leafs is going to take more time than just one offseason. Buying out Tucker and Kubina contracts are options to consider.

There is no way in hell the leafs could get a better deal then bobby ryan and a top five first round pick for sundin. If you are the leafs you prey every night that you get a return like that.

  7. lukeleim says:

maybe I wasn't clear. I was implying that Burke would not offer the likes of Ryan and the Oilers' first round pick; and that he would likely offer something less appealing, therefore the Leafs should look elsewhere.
