The Toronto Maple Leafs will definitely miss the playoffs once again this year
Hey guys,
It is extremely revolting to witness John Ferguson Jr.’s intentional mismanagement of the Leafs long-term salary cap structure by signing and trading for aging and unproductive mediocre players, and mortgaging the Maple Leafs future by trading away many high draft picks and top prospects in a feeble attempt to make the playoffs this year and secure a coveted contract extension from MLSE for himself. Also, Ferguson is such a disgraceful, self-serving and incompetent GM who never acknowledges or corrects any of his mistakes!
In my opinion, the Toronto Maple Leafs will miss the playoffs once again this year because during the past 5 seasons an 8th place team would need a total of about 90 points in order to qualify for the playoffs. Currently the Leafs have won 16 (equal to 39%) of their first 41 games of the season along with 8 OT/Shootout losses. However, if the Leafs who are currently 13th in the Eastern Conference want to finish 8th in the Conference standings, they will need a total of around 90 points. Therefore, they would have to win about 25 (equal to 61% or winning 3 out of every 5 games) of their remaining 41 games and lose only 16 of them or win 20 games, lose 11, and earn 10 OT/Shootout losses in a worst case scenario. That is impossible because all of the current playoff teams in both Conferences have already each won about 50% to 75% of their first 40 games. Also, if the Leafs were somehow able to win 25 of their remaining 41 games it would be a remarkable 50% improvement in total wins over the first half of the season which is unlikely to occur.
Current 2007-2008 NHL Standings for the Toronto Maple Leafs:
41 Games Played
16 Wins, 17 Losses, 8 OT/Shootout losses (worth one point), 40 Points
Projected 2007-2008 2nd half record for the Toronto Maple Leafs:
Best Case scenario
41 Games Played
25 Wins, 16 Losses, 0 OT/Shootout losses (worth one point each), 50 Points
Worst Case scenario
41 Games Played
20 Wins, 11 Losses, 10 OT/Shootout losses (worth one point each), 50 Points
Projected 2007-2008 end of season record for the Toronto Maple Leafs:
Best Case scenario
82 Games Played
41 Wins, 33 Losses, 8 OT/Shootout losses (worth one point each), 90 Points
Worst Case Scenario
82 Games Played
36 Wins, 28 Losses, 18 OT/Shootout losses (worth one point each), 90 Points
* 2 OT/Shootout losses is equal to 1 Win (worth two points each)
Without a playoff appearance, Ferguson will be fired by MLSE which will enable passionate Leafs fans to relieve themselves of JFJ’s incompetence and stupidity, and regain some hope as a new and hopefully more competent President and GM is hired to operate and manage the Maple Leafs properly!!
What do you guys think?
