Thought the Avs were good… this can only help!

“Konowalchuk cleared to play for Avs…”“DENVER (AP) – Not that long ago, it looked like Steve Konowalchuk’s season was over.

Then the Colorado Avalanche extended their season by sneaking into the playoffs and upsetting Dallas in the first round. Now Konowalchuk is back, too.

The 33-year-old forward – sidelined since November with a broken right wrist – returned to practice Wednesday. He was cleared to play in the Western Conference semifinals, where the Avs will face either San Jose or Anaheim.

“It feels like my first game – probably times 10 because we’re in the second round of the playoffs,” Konowalchuk said after skating at the team’s workout facility near Denver. “The wrist felt great. I’m ready to go.”

The team’s medical staff gave Konowalchuk the OK to return to the ice Tuesday, when his teammates got back from their 48-hour break after their quick elimination of the second-seeded Stars.”

The Avs proved themselves in the 1st round; this is going to be a even greater lift for them. All who doubted them will see… This is going to be a great 2nd round!

    It doesn’t matter if you have Konowalchuk or not. If the Av’s actually make it past the Ducks, they still have to face the Mighty Oilers Of Edmonton in the Western Finals. And you don’t stand a chance of getting through the oil-slick without getting burned………….

    It’ll be interesting to see how the Avs use Konowalchuk on his return. I can’t see him playing heavy minutes. But he is always the kind of guy you want in your lineup for big games. Guys like him always find a way to contribute. I’d take him on my team in a heartbeat.

    I hope I’m not mistaken, but didn’t he play VERY well on Sakic’s left wing, where Brunnett is playing?

    Either way, I could see him maybe playing with Lappariere and Laaksonen as a good checking unit, or with Tanguay and whoever else at center.

    No matter what combinations they use, he is EXACTLY the kind of guy who will get overlooked in the playoffs, and probably end up netting one or two very important goals in some late game situation.

    Very interesting to see who comes out of the West, as really, all these teams were fighting for playoff spots a couple months ago, and a couple were thought to be out of it… Very difficult to pick a winner, as I had my hopes on Calgary.

    It’s been a GREAT playoff.

    WOW! Konowalchuk is back! Let’s give the cup to Colorado right now!!! lol

    Like it’s gonna change anything… anaheim is way to strong for them…

    West: Ana/Sj -> Ana

    East: Nj/ Buf -> Nj

    2003 once again!!! Let’s see if Bryzgalov can outplay Brodeur….. I have to admit i’m a liitle skeptical

    But I hope I’m wrong and Edmonton goes all the way!!! But let’s be realistic… last time a team won the cup with a goaler like Roloson was Detroit with Osgood, and they had a WAY better team in front… But still… I’d like to see some Oilers girls!!!!

  5. Aetherial says:

    Heh, the oilers won’t make it past the Sharks, sorry.

    West: Ana/Edm -> Ana

    East: Nj/ Buf -> Nj

    Finals -> Nj

    SJ only beat Nashville, which was on the decline for the last couple of weeks of the regular season. I think Vacoun was hurt in that round. Roloson and the trap will be much tougher to beat. Edmonton beat the best team in the NHL in the regualr season. I give the edge to Edmonton, but Anaheim will beat Edmonton. It will be close, though.

  7. SabresFan220 says:

    I have to disagree, I think if San Jose gets past Edmonton and Anaheim beats Colorado that the Sharks’ offense gets them past the Ducks. However, if San Jose goes down I do see the Ducks in the Finals.

    And if Buffalo beats Ottawa there’s no way in hell they lose to New Jersey (unless all their best players get hurt in the series). Ottawa is 3x the team Jersey is, the difference is Brodeur and even he can’t win a series by himself. I think New Jersey can beat the Canes, but beyond that both Buffalo and Ottawa are too good for a neutral zone trap team to hold off forever.

  8. Habs_no1_fan says:

    New Jersey has just been too dominant in the last games, including end of the season… They made the Rangers look like pee-wees, the same team who lead their division almost all year long… I already know what you will tell me, that jagr and lundqvist were almost never there, but the rangers have a deep team but yet, they couldn’t even compete with NJ.

    I think that NJ will easily get past Carolina and if they face the Sabres, it will be a hell of a series, probably going to 6 or 7 games, but I think NJ has a little edge over Buffalo…

    1st: best goaltender left in all playoff teams, without ANY doubt, is Brodeur

    2st: NJ’s best players (EGG line) is better then buffalo’s best players… with all my respect to Dumont and Brière, two of the best quebec forwards!

    I have to agree that buffalo is a little deeper, but I don’t think it’ll be enough…

    As for SJ, I think the fact that Thornton’s brain stops working and that he forgets how to play when spring comes will hurt them in the long run… This kind a player has to step up, and that’s exactly what Selanne has done, and what he will do if they get to face the Sharks…

    But deep down, I hope that the ducks will lose in 4, with selanne having no points and getting booed of the ice… then, he will be pissed and sign with Montreal to play with his fellow one-eyed finnish friend!!!!! (o:

    Let me dream please….

  9. gemini_the_drunk says:

    Oilers beat the Sharks in 6.

  10. thegoalie1976 says:

    I agree. The oilers are this years flames. Oilers / Devils final.

  11. thegoalie1976 says:

    If you are knocking Roli, you have not watched any of the games he played. Brodeur aside, he has been the best goalie in the playoffs. I expect to see brodeur vs roli in the cup final

  12. Habs_no1_fan says:

    Ok, I have to admit I didn’t see a lot of Roloson since he joined the Oilers, but I know him from Minnsota, and I know that he’s really good… All I’m saying is that he’s not really “cup material” if I can say…

    2004: N. Khabibulin

    2003: M. Brodeur

    2002: D. Hasek

    2001: P. Roy

    2000: M.Brodeur

    1999: E. Belfour…

    Should I go on? I’m sorry, but I really don’t see Big Dwayne in this category…

    But again, I hope I’m wrong…

    Go canadian team!!!!

    By the way… just wondering…. did any guy named Dwayne ever won the stanley cup???

  13. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

    only thing anaheim may be better in is goaltending. avs scored 18 goals in 5 games. theodore made almost 90 saves in the last 2 games giving up 4 goals i think.

  14. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

    careful while the oilers surprised me i still do not think they can get past the sharks. the sharks absolutley destroyed nashville. so this is a tough test for edmonton. if we make it past the ducks? didnt u say stars of avs?

  15. JannettyTheRocker says:

    This is my exact Stanley Cup Final’s pick as well……Nice Pick.

  16. justsomeguy says:

    I completely agree. I wonder why people think Anaheim is automatic in this series. They beat a Calgary team that showed no ability to score (other than Iginla). Now they face an Avs team with MUCH more scoring punch than the Flames. People wonder whether Edmonton will be able to weather the offense of San Jose; if I were a Ducks fan, I’d be having lots of the same concerns. The Avs are MUCH better offensively than the team they just beat and this series is nowhere near the slam dunk for Anaheim that people around here seem to be making it.

  17. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

    people are also forgetting that while the ducks did score goals, as the avs series went on theodore only got better. bryzgalov is good yes but how many saves in his games did he have to make? 20 25? my point like yours is that the avs are going to either pepper bryzgalov with shots or with few shots and still manage to squeak some in like the last 2 games of the avs dallas series.
