Three-Way Deal!

According to TSN, the Chicago BlackHawks acquired Kyle Calder from the Flyers for Lasse Kukkonen and a 3rd Pick (2007). They then traded Calder to Detroit for Jason Williams.

To CHICAGO: Jason Williams
To DETROIT: Kyle Calder
To PHILADELPHIA: Lasse Kukkonen + Chicago’s 3rd Pick (2007)

Great deal for the Hawks I’d say.

Any one know anything about Lasse Kukkonen?  Clearly he's Finnish, but where is he playing and when was he drafted?

It sucks that they essentially traded Handzus for a nobody.

Ummm…….I think in the long run this is better for CHi i go to all wings home games and this year both players have had a drop in points. Williams had over 20 goals last year 26 points this year. 21 points this year for calder 59 last year. Also i noticed williams struggling this year and injurys maybe the cause. But for right now if Calder can produce most likely with lang it will be great. The Flyers get a GREAT young player with Kukkonen

    You mean calder right??

  4. radiod927 says:

Kukkonen was drafted 5th round in 2003. He's been playing in Chicago this year.

  5. Villanova says:

No i mean Handzus.  Flyers traded Handzus for Calder in the summer.  8 months later, they trade Calder back to Chicago for a mediocre defensemen.

  6. papichulo71 says:

Pretty much a wash with Calder for Williams.  I don't know enough Kukkonen to comment.

  7. Lint07 says:

Calder couldn't throw a hit to save his life… I'd rather have Williams than him going into the playoffs.

I'm sure Williams will look good playing alongside Havlat.

  8. Gagne1286 says:

I like Calder I thought he was finally turning the corner after a rough start. I like the way he battled in the corners, he seemed like a hard worker, but not worth his 2.95 million contract. Though the line of Carter, Upshall, and him did look promising. Don't know much about Kukkonen but he seems like a decent 5-6th D-Men.

  9. wingsfan13 says:

im sory but ur totally wrong here on williams.  calder was a steal for williams.  he's horrible defensively and offensively, couldn't hit an open net, literally and he doesn't hit.  a waste of space.  amazing considering we didn't up any picks.

  10. Lint07 says:

he's had a bad season that's for sure but I really do think that Williams has way more upside than Calder.

you do realize that Calder was a healthy scratch for Ottawa last year, right?

  11. hockeykid9213 says:

Not a steal only 5 ponts apart and Williams hits.

  12. SensShark says:

Arnason….and then Joe Sakic kicked his ass into shape

  13. Lint07 says:

my bad. I somehow mix up both sometimes. oh well 🙂

  14. StevieY9802 says:

I am gonna trust Holland. not sure why you make this deal unless they think Calder is great or Williams wanted/needed to be out. I think its an even trade though. So thats why I question why they did it.

  15. nonhl2005 says:

So the Flyers traded a hurt, UFA for a 5th-6th Dman and a 3rd round pick. Not bad in my book.

  16. Uncleben says:

Kukkonen is my fav hawk prospect. just like that.

Why is it that every player i like goes to my least favourite team?

upshall, kukkonen, calder, sanderson just to name a few. kapanen and knuble have been for awhile. Its like some one is trying to make me like the Flyers. lol

anyway… i think CHI paid too much with the draft pick

  17. 2006 says:

So you don't like good players than?

  18. Uncleben says:
i do, but for some reason i liked those players when they were back witht their old teams, mostly for their heart and playing style, and then they all moved to Philly. it's not that these are the only players i like

You gotta give Holmgren his props for the trades he's made this year.

Getting young and cheap by acquiring Upshall, Parent, Coburn and now Kukkonen (as well as a #1 and 2 #3 picks)…if he can find anything for Esche, Hatcher or York…we're looking good for a big bounce back year in 07-08!

  20. Coleman says:

I agree. I thnk that Holmgren has made a lot of good moves shipping out some dead weight with heavy contracts. Nothing against Forsberg, he's the best part time hockey player in the world….unfortunately we're looking for full time players for the Flyers.

However, I really hope that Holmgren can make the team attractive enough for some good, experienced UFA talent to sign in the offseason. These trades will take a long time to pay off if there aren't any guys around to show the young blood the ropes. Alll this being said, the defense is looking pretty good for years to come!

williams doesn't hit, period.  i've watched about 50 of the red wings games and rarely do i see him take the body.  enough.  you barely even notice williams most nights.  yeah i know calder has had a rough season but he can do more shown by his 59pts on absolutely horrible no-body chicago team last year.  i'm a avid wings fan and may be biased in a small margin, but i know what i see because i watch about 5 other nhl games a week as well.  there's a reason why he wasn't drafted.  he stinks.  no defensive intincts or effort whatsoever.  he is supposed to be our "point sniper"  but his shot is highly inaccurate.  often times he take an excellent pass from Lang and he'll be all alone or be 10ft from the net and miss it completely.
his only good attribute is he is fast and a great skater.  i know i'm only focusing on williams primarily, but calder is a good choice because it took little risk, no picks, and a crappy player to get him and he has the potential to be a top 6 forward when at his game.  I believe am versed enough and watch enough of the wings to be considered to have expertise.

Ohhh sorry my fault i forgot about handzus deal

Instead of 07-08 don't you mean 08-09. All of these players are rookies, they have a way to go before making an impact on the Flyers. They are good players but it will be a few years.
