Time to offer-sheet or trade for Canadiens’ P.K. Subban?

As the P.K. Subban saga drags on, you have to wonder if there is a team out there that would consider an offer sheet for the defenceman, who remains far apart on a deal with the Montreal Canadiens following a meeting that yielded no progress Friday.

At the top of anybody’s list would be the Philadelphia Flyers, a club that tendered an offer to Shea Weber which was matched by the Nashville Predators last summer, and who lost another defenceman Friday when it was announced oft-injured Andrej Meszaros will be out for a month with a shoulder injury. With Chris Pronger’s career all but officially over because of a concussion, the Flyers have a need for a top blueline presence.

But one agent scoffed at the idea any team would go the offer sheet route.

“It would be futile to make an offer sheet,” he texted. “Montreal would match for sure and every team knows it. No one will do it.”

If Subban was offered a deal worth $5 million a year, the compensation would be a first- and third-round pick.
