You're not the first person who has thought of this scenario. And you're very right.

it happened last year with Doug Weight and Mark Recchi. The chances of Tkachuk going back to St. Louis after the season go up a lot, if Atlanta either goes out early from the playoffs, or misses it altogether....very strong possibilities.

Bottom line, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if Tkachuk is back in blue next year. The only way that compensatory 1st round pick can be justifed is if Waddell is extremely confident of signing Tkachuk. If not, this is a huge, huge blunder of a move. He's gambling on Tkachuk being something he's never really been, and that's a difference maker.

here's one for everyone to chew on. what if tkachuck resigns with st.louis in the offseason. hes family lives there and had to give up his no trade clause to go to atlanta. mabey he did this so he could be in the playoffs this year then go back to the blues in the offseason who will be reaping the benifits of a dumb move by waddell.

Yeah maybe you're right, he doesn't have as many assists as I thought this season, but in my monthly hockey news subscription colin campbell has this system of points based on important goals (ie rally goals, tying goals, goals in the final minute, goals in the final 5 minutes etc.) and Keith was doing really well in these categories all year, so is Guerin for that matter.

no, maybe one of the top-50 forwards in the league, maybe.

but top-50 players, forget about it. that many draft picks for Tkachuck. no sorry, that is absolutely ridiculous.

i guess 1st rounders are just not as valuable as they once were. i dont get it, because they are crucial for the future of a franchise. thankfully the Leafs havent fallen into that trap.

I agree, it wasn't that bad of a trade. For a team in Atlanta's position it was a pretty good move:

Kovalchuck - Holik - Kozlov
Tkachuck - Rucchin - Hossa
Sim - Belanger - Mellanby
Slater - Kapenen - Viger

Looks like they could put together an awesome top 2 lines, and still have pretty good 3rd and 4th line guys.

It's not even a gurantee that Atlanta will make the playoffs. A cold streak by them or a hot streak by Carolina or someone else could leave them on the outside looking in.

If ATL misses the playoffs, I think it's safe to say Waddel will be the first GM to walk the plank.

right. fixed it now.

I somehow thought that the conditionnal pick was going to ATL if they can't re-sign Tkachuk which would've somehow made some sense

but now the pick (a 1st!!) going to St. Louis if ATL re-sign him, like you said it's simply insane.
