To Coach or not to Coach…

According to a news release by, sources are inclined to think that Gretzky might not coach this seson due to the length of time it has taken to either accept or reject the coaching job. GM Barnett said he has a backup plan if Gretzky decides not to coach. Some possible candidates are interim head coach from 03-04 Rick Bowness, Phoenix fan favorite Rick Tocchet (my pick), Barry Smith, or former Red Wing coach Dave Lewis.

Gretzky is to meet with owner Ellman on Monday and a decision could come as early as Tuesday.

It would be a smart move to coach. I am not saying Gretz would be a great coach because he is a great player, but if the coyotes want to bring some more fans to there games, that is how to do it, also, more players would opt to go to the valley, because they would want to play with wayne leading the way. If he doesnt, Lewis should be next, he has experience, last year Bowness really pissed me off watching those games.

Gretz obviously has a great hockey mind, but if the team falters under him while he’s coaching, it could pose some problems. How do you fire the Great One? I’m sure he would step aside gracefully (He’s definately one of the classiest professional atheletes of all time), but he might lose some lustre.

That being said, I hope he DOES decide to coach, and I wish him all the best.

The Coyotes are showing interest in Mike Dunham.

I could not see Gretz, or Messier either, as coaches. They are not the types to get fired. And, the best coaches who were former players always turn out to be the non all-stars of years past.

If i were the Yotes, i’d go for Tocchet. He was excellent with the Avs.

ESPN now states that Gretz will coach the Coyotes.

Gretzky will NEVER be fired from any NHL team.

If anything, he’ll be politely asked to quit the job.

I think Messier will one day make a great NHL coach…GRetzky though? I’m curious to see how this’ll play out.

Me thinks Gretzky is going to implement the trap, you heard it here first. 😉

The NHL needs EVERYTHING it can to renew interest. Having the most recognizable person in the history of hockey as a coach will generate interest from even casual sports fans.

For the NHL to (re)gain the respect and trust of fans, the first step is to get them to notice. Even if Gretzky becoming a coach is one big publicity stunt on behalf of hockey, I wouldn’t even mind. The game needs some publicity.
