Top 10 most pleasent surprises to start the season.

I have been so pleasantly surprised by different players, that i was compelled to make a list.10. Defenseman Derian Hatcher Philadelphia Flyers
Wow, defensive liability to defensive asset in one year. he’s not taking penalties, and isn’t slowing his team down.

9. Goaltender Martin Biron Philadelphia Flyers
I admit, I expected him to flop in Philly, but a chance to be a starter again has turned him into a fine starter. Has won a few games on his own.

8. Forward Eric Belanger Minnesota Wild
I always saw him as a filler player who had no real strengths, who could pot 15 a year. But in Minnesota, hes turning into a great defenive asset who can put up big points.

7. Forward Patrik Kane Chicago Blackhawks
I thought he’d play another year in Junior for sure, but he’s here, and he’s putting up points.

6. Forward Mike Cammaleri Los Angelas Kings
To all hab fans who though LA would trade this guy to you for pieces you didnt want…..now you know why they didn’t. Cammaleri is scoring like crazy, hes the centerpiece of a very powerful LA Kings offense.

6. Forward Paul Statsny Colorado Avalanche
Can you believe I one thought he was about equal to Steen. When Sakis decides to hang up the skates, the Avalanche will be in good hands.

5. Defenseman Chris Campoli New York Islanders
I thought he’d break out last year. He didn’t. He has now, and could possibly become a top pairing guy this season.

4. Forwards Daymond Lankow Calgary Flames
He’s playing with Iginla, but he’s still scoring like crasy. Leads the NHL in goals.

3. Defenseman Brett Burns Minnesota Wild
We all knew he could play defense, but did anyone else know he could light it up too? He went from nobody, to decent prospect last year, to top pairing defenseman this year. I can only imagine what he’ll be like next year.

2. Forward Robert Lang Chicago Blackhawks
He has an open net, and he passes the puck to Ruutu…that is a very pleasant surprise from a guy once considered to be very selfish. It impressed me a lot.

1. Forward Henrik Zetterberg Detroit Red Wings
After an injury plagued off year last year, he has come out on fire. He leads the NHL in points. Hes one of the nicest guys in the NHL, and a treat to watch.

Thats my top 10. forgive me if i forgot some (which i most surely did) but I have not seen every team play this year.

I'm surprised you didn't put Antropov there, especially because you've probably seen most of their games.  He's been pretty good so far.

  2. Wings19 says:

Little David was in his 5th grade class when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living.

All the typical answers came up – fireman, policeman, salesman, etc. David was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked him about his father. "My father's an exotic dancer in a gay bar and takes off all his clothes in front of other men. Sometimes, if the offer's really good, he'll go out to the alley with some guy and make love with him for money."

The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some coloring, and took little David aside to ask him, "Is that really true about your father?"

"No," said David. "He plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids."

  3. MR40 says:

Absolutly off topic here, but I need someone's help.

Is this a really bad trade for me in my Yahoo Pool?

To Me: Robert Lang, Martin Havlat
To the other guy: J.P. Dumont, and Daymond Langkow

I made the trade the day Havlat got hurt… (Someone made my picks for me, and I wanted those players, and didn't want the guys I had, so yeah…).

Ok i'm still trying to decide if this was a really bad trade for me, or just okay.

  4. senators101 says:

I would have done it. the only problem is havlats injury.  just put him on IR and sign a free agent to make up for a month.

  5. Asquaredx2 says:

No Antropov or Chad Larose? I don't think Zetterberg is much of a surprise, tob e honest.

  6. nonhl2005 says:

Depends on how your league works, if like the other person said you can put Havlat on IR and pick up another forward I think it's a good deal.
I have had Havlat the last few years and because my League allows you to carry up to 3 IR guys it has worked out. Havlat's numbers are not great that he's a sought after player but when he is in the lineup he is good for some points. Usually when he goes out it's right to the IR so he's not a DTD guy that kills you. The way Lang has been playing so far I think you made a good deal, but only time will tell for sure.
    Good luck

  7. jmarkow says:

What about Jeremy Roenick.  Not lighting the lamp up like some of the other guys listed, but 5 points in 7 games isn't bad for a guy most people picked to retire by Thanksgiving.

  8. habsrock99 says:

Zetterberg's no surprise. The other 9 are. But, yes this is coming from a Habs fan but Alex Kovalev has 4 goals and 7 points in 8 games. Plus he's not pissing anyone off and is actually working hard game in, game out, going into the corners, checking, winning races, making other players look foolish. Kind of a surprise for most people.

  9. mvand77 says:

HAHAHAH wow i love that one

    (nothing against the leafs)

  10. mvand77 says:

I might be a little biased but I would have never traded Langkow, even before the season started.

  11. leafy says:

I can't believe it, you actually came up with a good point.  Where is this world coming to.

  12. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

didnt want it to degrade into a pissing match (as every leaf article does) so i didnt include him, but yes he should be there,.

  13. senators101 says:

lol.. some people probably would have written shit on here about that, smart move.  Zetterberg shouldn't be there though and Antropov should be top 3.

  14. TheStryker says:

Patrice “breezer” Brisebois. He has been playing well for the habs

  15. Archion113 says:

No way Zetterberg was a surprise, and if he was no way was he #1.

I'd argue that Mike Richards should be on the list.

I'll do my list tomorrow, good effort though.  I like most of your choices.

  16. habsgod says:

    lol!ha!ha!ha!nice!!

  17. habsgod says:

mr.40 you got raped!!i wouldn't have done this deal!!langkow alone is worth that!havlat keeps getting injured and hasn't up up 80 points in a season as where langkow did and does !!j.p dumont is a pretty solid point guy that will get more points than lang!!

  18. habsgod says:

mr.40 you got raped!!i wouldn't have done this deal!!langkow alone is worth that!havlat keeps getting injured and hasn't up up 80 points in a season as where langkow did and does !!j.p dumont is a pretty solid point guy that will get more points than lang!!i would ask for somebody else other than havlat!!

  19. Rico71 says:

    Honorable mention goes to Kovalev.

He actually showed up for all the games so far this year. Almost a point a game also. Wow.

    That’s a surprise.

    lol

  20. broc says:

    I know it's early, but…

How bout them Bluejackets for a surprise? Is Hitch turnin this team around or what.

  21. Hoondog2 says:

I can't believe Mats Sundin isn't on this list.  He's only leading the league in points (tied with Zetterberg i believe).

  22. JuicemaN says:

And that's the exact reason why I actually stopped checking out this site for a solid month and a bit…Antropov is playing as good if not better than anybody in the league and yet Leaf fans can't say a word about it without anti-leaf fans ripping them apart.

If anybody praises Antropov we'll hear "relax maple laughs…it's 10 games; you haven't wont the cup yet; try making it to the playoffs first".

Any other team can praise their players they've been hoping to break out but the leafs…ridiuclous.

if it wasn't for guys like you (senators101), flamingsenator, blue and white, archion and a few others I would never come to this site…..it's simply a ***** fest amung children and once in a while you find people with educated thoughts.

    Thanks for sticking around guys.

  23. JuicemaN says:

It's more like this…this is 100% accurate for what's it's liek to be a leaf fan:

Two boys are playing hockey on a frozen pond in Red Deer, Alberta,
when one of the boys is suddenly attacked by a crazed Rottweiler.

Thinking quickly, the other boy takes his hockey stick, shoves it under the dog's collar, twists it, and breaks the dog's neck, saving his friend.

A reporter is strolling by, sees the incident, and rushes over to interview the boy. "Young Flames Fan Saves Friend From Vicious Animal" he starts writing in his book.

"But I'm not a Flames Fan" the little hero replies.

"Sorry, but as we are in Alberta, I just assumed you were" says the reporter and he starts writing again.

"Oilers Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack" he writes in his notebook.

"I'm not an Oilers fan either" the little boy says

"Oh, I assumed that everyone in Alberta was either for the Flames or
the Oilers. What team do you root for?" the reporter asks.

"I am a Maple Leafs fan" the boy replies.

The reporter starts a new page in his notebook and writes: "Little Bastard from Ontario Kills Beloved Family Pet"

  24. senators101 says:

Yea, it's unfortunate that there are a lot of retards here.  Even I have started commmenting less, just come to see what the stories are all about.  Takke care bro.

  25. nonhl2005 says:

An Article right up your alley, this should make you feel a little better about the deal.

How's about Bill Guerin?  His leadership has been a big surprise.
