Toronto Maple Leafs kicking the tires on Sam Gagner, says Toronto sports insider

But could it be Oilers will announce on Tuesday signing up Gagner long-term?

The alarm and excitement of Edmonton Oilers fans is starting to get a bit crazy, with wild rumours sprouting up about the Oilers trying to acquire players like Dion Phaneuf or Jake Gardiner from Toronto and Zack Smith from Ottawa, with Sam Gagner or Ales Hemsky moving in the other direction.

All of this is unsubstantiated hullabaloo from Twitter, but some of it comes from Josh Rimer, a guest booker on Sportsnet and host of NiteCap on out of Toronto. I’d never heard of the guy until he was the one who broke the news that Ralph Krueger was going to be fired.

That certainly got my attention in regards to Mr. Rimer.

On Sunday afternoon, Rimer tweeted out:  ”Hearing Leafs have had discussions with Oilers about Sam Gagner. Leafs are looking for a young centre and he certainly fits the bill. … I do see the Leafs adding one of Gagner, Stastny or Stephen Weiss. … Vancouver has also has discussions about Gagner as Sam’s dad Dave is part of Canucks MGMT.”

I like the Trade But what else goes with this… I hardly believe that its straight up… Gagnier is a RFA and Dion has 1 year left before UFA. This is Gagnier’s last Contract before he is a UFA. Id like to see the players traded with swaping 2013 First Rd Picks….

    To Tor To Edm

    Gagnier Phaneuf
    Edm 1st 2013 Tor 1st 2013

I think this with as deep as this draft is Balances out the 1 year left on Dion’s Contract and if Toronto Can Sign Gagnier to a long term (more than 3 years)than ship a 2014 3rd or 4th rd back

    • I’m hearing that tomorrow the Oilers might be announcing Gagner’s extension.

Ya MacT seems high on Gagner and he should even though Oilers fans seem toss him in every hypothetical deal going.

Still wouldn’t trade Dion for him.

        • In all fairness to him, he was expected to exceed at a very young age – and has done a terrific job. He’s still very young and could learn so much more with another coach. He’s never going to be a true number 1 center. But he’s got potential to be a number 2 guy on a lot of teams.

I would definitely do that trade with the swapping of 1sts. We get a young talented centre added to the mix and upgrade our prospect. See ya Dion.

I would also like to see the Leafs go after Boyle or Letang. I know neither is a shutdown guy, but both are good. Danny B would cost less…
