Trade Deadline updates and Rumors (Hurricanes, Leafs and Coyotes)

The latest rumors on the Hurricanes, an update on Dominic Moore and the latest on Derek Morris.

The News Observer is ruling out speculation that the Hurricanes are one of the tams that are in play for Bill Guerin and it is also noted that “Then there’s the NHL trading deadline — Wednesday at 3 p.m. Rutherford said the Canes were not actively negotiating deals, but he didn’t rule one out, either.”

It is also noted that while the asking price for players is very high right now the Hurricanes are not likely to trade picks or prospects to make a deadline deal.

Dominic Moore Talk

Tsn.ca is reporting that the Maple Leafs are presently negotiating with Moore on a new deal however it is reported that “The Leafs made a counter offer on Monday, but sources say that offer was well below what Moore considers to be his bottom line – believed to be between $2.5 million and $3 million per season.”

HTR believes that 2.5 or 3 million may be just too much money for the Leafs to hang on to Moore.

The Latest on Derek Morris

Tsn.ca is also reporting that Derek Morris will sit to prevent the risk of injury until he is traded. It is noted that Morris has given the Coyotes a list of teams that he is willing to be traded to so that he would lift his no trade clause.

Moore is nuts if he thinks he will get $2.5/yr from anyone, if Burke offered more than the previously reported $1.5/yr for 3 years then Moore should jump at that.

  2. leafy says:

No way. If I'm Moore, I'd test the free agent waters in July, because the way he's played this year, $2.5M is actually a bargain, let alone accepting $1.5M.  Very under-rated player, but people are finally starting to notice.

  3. dumbassdoorman says:

Yet another player over-valuing themselves after ONedecent sason. Now I am a Leaf fan and like Moore but come on, 2.5-3 MIl…..give your head a shake. Go a head and test UFA, I think he will find no takers at that price. He also won't find the ice time he receives anywhere else. Too bad he is a good fit, but greed overcomes again.

  4. leafy says:

Tucker got $4M three years ago. But then again, Ferguson was GM.

But seriously, on the open market in July, somebody always steps up and pays the price, even if it's more than he's worth. We see it every summer.

  5. Kyleton says:

Tucker also had more than 20 goals before

  6. Kyleton says:

Wild Signed Backstrom for 4 years at  6 million per year

    Rangers claim Avery off re-entry

  7. alpalstewart says:

carolina should forget about guerin and try to get cole back. he's missing staal & staal's missing him.
how about this for a trade.
    edm gives cole,grebeshkov,shremp,and a 2nd rounder for
    ruutu,corvo and williams

  8. trueblue says:

Great move to pick up Avery for half price….expect a deal to upgrade or at the very least see Voros go bye-bye and shed a little salary for a pick since we dont need him any more!

If they do an upgrade i just dont want to see dawes or korpikoski go…its too soon to part with the rookies….

maybe if they upgrade prucha and deal prucha, potter, and voros
any suggestions on what they can pick up for the trio? maybe even add a pick if necesssary… how does everyone feel about o'sullivan?

if they just deal voros for a pick and call it a day….i'd be satisfied….i really want to see them preserve their youth movement and i think they can win with the group that they now have….they have a fighting chance….lets put it that way!

  9. Mattay05 says:

Once again, I know this has been asked in the past… If we're talking about Moore, WHY is there a picture of John Mitchell on the front? lol

  10. mojo19 says:

well leafy, I'd say he's earned $2.5 million, or at least the right to ask for that much, but I wouldn't call it a bargain. One hot season hardly warrants up around $3 million, unless its by a guy who's like 22 or 23 who looks like he's busting out and is expected to be a star in the future. But not a guy who is in his prime now.

  11. mojo19 says:

Ya its true, when I read "Leafs and Coyotes rumors" and saw the picture, I thought they were shopping Johnny! I was pissed, but I'm glad it was just a wrong picture.

  12. leafy says:

    Ok, fair enough.

By the way, Mojo, here is that Pat Quinn hit on Bobby Orr I was telling you about.  This is from the '69 playoffs.  Watch Cherry describe it.

  13. leafy says:

It just shows how far Moore has come in a short period of time that they don't even have a picture of him. Haha!

  14. mojo19 says:

Haha, thanks leafy. Listen you definitely gotta come on msn Wednesday night to talk about the trade deadline.

Oh and for a more in depth look at my Moore analysis visit my blog: http://www.nhlkvasni.blogspot.com

  15. mojo19 says:

No question Fergie overpayed for Tucker. But then again Dan Cleary is earning $2.8 mil in Detroit so maybe Moore (and his agent) look at a player like that and feel that Dominic is just as worthy.

On the other hand, like I said before, one good half season is never enough to convince any GM, Cleary was a consistant 20 goal- 20 assist, gritty guy for a couple years before earning that contract.

  16. mojo19 says:

But we can all agree John Mitchell is sweet, right?

  17. leafy says:

Sure I'll come on. Lots to discuss.

  18. leafy says:

I like Mitchell because he's a big strong forward, he can skate, and he has a good shot.

I like his signature move of easing into the high slot and unleashing a good wrist shot.

  19. mojo19 says:

I should hook u up King-Canada's email too

  20. mojo19 says:

Ya I agree, it takes a lot of patience to do that, he creates shooting lanes for himself by holding onto the puck that extra bit after you would expect him to already shoot. Good potential.

Cliff Fletcher was immediately in love with Mitchell shortly after he took over as GM last year. He gave Mitchell a big league contract late last season I believe, he was big on Mitchell right away.

  21. leafy says:

    Sounds good.
