No offense but it doesn't look that much different from the one they already have going this year. Losing Selanne and Koivu is huge, I don't think Kulemin can replace it that easily, and Grigorenko is probably better then Koivu but I think he might get the top line spot later into the season, they could go and get a 2nd line center during free agency.. I don't know really, i don't think we're getting Getzlaf.

I agree with you. Even if Murray is considering moving one of the big 3 (I don't think he is), his proclaiming it only drove up the price for each one, making it virtually unlikely to happen.

Now I actually think trading one of them would make sense. With Getzlaf and Perry both coming to Free Agency, and both of them looking like they could get 7 - 8 million dollars a year. If you can get a top prospect, a good young forward, a good young defenseman and a first rounder, that's a pretty damn good price. This core isn't exactly working right now and hasn't since they won a cup.

Losing Getzlaf virtually ensures that they get a top 3 pick so grab a Grigorenko, Yakupov, Forsberg and then use the other pick for a good dman. Add on DSP, Etem, Schultz and you're looking unspectacularily good. Team has depth at every position, has youth, has incredible talent and they have good cap space moving forward.

I can see why Murray would do it. Plus you give Bobby Ryan the time he needs to reach his top line potential.

You get something like this

         - Ryan - Perry

Blake - Grigorenko - Kulemin

DSP - Cogliano - Etem

Palmieri - - Belesky

Beauchemin - Fowler

Schenn - Visnovsky

Schultz - Sbisa

Hiller

That's a pretty nice looking lineup.

Though I'd rather Getzlaf I've got to think Staal is more likely. The Leafs more than anything need that top line center but my gut says Burke won't be able to pull this one off and will be forced to settle with adding some size to the forward group. Really not a bad outcome anyways as maybe a bit of patience is the way to go.

If Burke does aggresively pursue a number 1 center Getzlaf seems unlikely. Murray mentioning that the big 3 are available sounds more like a verbal kick in the a*s to his team than anything. Rutherford claiming Staal was going nowheres is much more common before a big trade.

Really Murray shouldn't move any of the big 3. Maybe Ryan but even still it seems counter-productive. They have lots of money coming off the books in the off-season and will be much younger next year. Draft a Yakupov or Grigorenko who can probably play next year. Snag a mid-level UFA such as Ruutu,Kostitsyn,Gaustad etc. and the Ducks could easily be back in the playoffs next year. Doesn't make sense to move your stars who are still so young.

As for Carolina with only the star in his prime it would make much more sense to move. Staals high cap hit would lower his value somewhat compared to Getzlaf. The Canes are in a much better position to do a full rebuild. Grigorenko-Colborne(perhaps?)-Sutter could be a nice young trio down the middle next.

Anyways don't see Burke landing either unfortunately but if he's got a chance for one I would expect it to be Staal. Now something more likely than either is that Getzlaf doesn't get moved, but at the end of next season decides to test FA. If Getzlaf hits the open market that's when Burke has a very good shot at snagging him.
I agree 100%. I am all for playing the hotter goaltender. If I were a coach I would treat a backup as a backup, straight up. I would play my number one goalie every single game, except for when he is injured or struggling a little bit. I am a strong believer treating a backup as strickly a back up. I am not saying Reimer is the leafs back up, they are pretty evenly no.1's on this team, but Gus is way hotter right now.
I agree with you 110%. If we can get to the playoffs with the team we have right now than don't make any changes. We don't have to go far, making the playoffs for the first time in 6-7 years, i'm sure no one will complain, even if we lose 4-0 in the first round. So many young players on this team will get their first playoff experience and will be a HUGE learning curve for next season. Plus Colborne will be more developed and ready.
Yea Shattenkirk was a huge part of that trade. I think it was a bad trade for the Avalanche that doesn't mean that Burke has to also make a bad trade. It may not be enough for Stewart but Gunnarson has significant value.

Just to egg him on more...

Phaneuf>Subban

If we go by his rules, Phaneuf is greater because his rookie season was far superior than Subban's. He had 20 goals...While Subban had 14.

Also, Phaneuf's actually a plus player...While Subban is a career negative.

Doesn't he understand how absurd he sounds at time?
