My view is that this deal will simply not happen. Rumors always abound as the NHL trading day deadline approaches, and this one seems too far-fetched for me to take seriously. TSN's respected columnist Bob McKenzie calls this a "bizzare rumor." I agree wholeheartedly.

I feel that Washington Capitals' defenceman Sergei Gonchar is definitely not the type of defenceman the Leafs need as they battle for top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Leafs' lack of a strong defensive effort by their forwards and their defencemen demands that they acquire one or several defensive-minded defencemen prior to the NHL trading deadline.

One player that the Toronto Maple Leafs should be interested in is Washington Capitals defenceman Brendan Witt. a solid, defensive-minded defenceman. Witt is definitely the type of defenceman the Leafs need in order to ensure a better defensive effort in their own end. If Leafs GM John Ferguson Jr has any sense of what the Leafs really need, he will make every effort to acquire him.

The question is, what will the Caps want in return? I would trade Leafs defenceman Tomas Kaberle (weak defensive coverage and lacks a physical presence on the blueline) and a draft pick or a Leafs prospect (Kondratiev) for Witt. Certainly, you give up Kaberle's passing skills, but Bryan McCabe and Ken Klee can certainly make up for this loss. In addtion, Leafs promising defenceman Carlo Collaiacovo should be brought up for a few NHL games to begin seasoning and preparing him for his future NHL career with the Leafs.

Solid, gritty, defensive-minded defencemen may not attract as much media hype and fan attention as a stud defenceman, but in my opinion they're worth their weight in gold.

first off the reason the sens and flyers got those players for nothing is simple......if you rent a movie you will only pay like less than 5 bucks....so you don't give up much for rentals......but i want to compare this package to the one the leafs gave up for that overpaid over the hill owen nolan....namely mccualy boyes and a 1st rounder......first part antropov and mccauly.....offensively antropov would seem to have the advantage but their point production is pretty much the same mccauly is far superior on the defenseive side......edge mccauly.....next the ahl pair of boyes and wellwood.....now he may lead ahl rookies however AHL success does not alway equal NHL success bottom line boyes was one of toronto's best prospects.....where as wellwood......i'll admit i did not know existed till i watch the AHL all star skills compitetion......tsn.ca under his profile says his potential is a third line center.......edge boyes.....now i will grant tellvquist his dew he has potential......however against that 1st rounder and the fact that washington has two younger goalies in stana and ouellet who has more promise.....edge would have to to the first rounder......so there you have it......this offer is not even close to the one the sharks got for nolan......so why other than simply not having a brain would mcphee (washington's GM) accept this trade?
