You can't forget that your the LEafs though. Trades aren't limited to just the players. So many more factors come into it.

The more I think about it, the more I want no part of a Nash trade. He won't fit on this team. His contract is enormous and he won't be getting top line time. We simply don't need him. He doesn't fill the biggest need we have on our team and that alone means it's not worth giving up an asset like Gardiner.

Grabbing Nash handcuffs us. We lose salary flexibility, we take time away from our developing superstar Kessel, we destroy the depth we're building.

The way Gardiner is playing, he could be a number 1 dman. I'm not giving that up for a guy whose been a loser on his team for his entire career.

agreed, I wouldn't accept anything less right now.

Bartschi, 2012 1st minimum for Grabo. I would ask for Bartschi, Granlund, 2012 1st. Wont happen but I would definitely ask for it.
I hear you. I love Gardiner too, but let me put it this way....

You can either have option A or B, and forget that you're the Leafs or Columbus, or whomever, which do you choose?

Rick Nash
or
Jake Gardiner, Nikolai Kulemin, Nazem Kadri, 1st round pick

Don't get me wrong, there is a good chance that all these guys will be very good, especially Jake. However, history is against the Jackets. The team that gives up the big star for the package inevitibly loses in the long run. Whether that's Vince Carter, Roy Halladay.... hey Toronto has been f u cked a few times! Let's be on the other end of that for once.

Seriously, there is a good chance that Kulemin will be a really solid NHL'er, have a good career, maybe even hit 30 goals a couple more times. Kadri might be a good NHL'er too, so will Jake, and the 1st rounder might amount to a guy who ends up playing in the NHL too (odds are he won't become anything of note, historically/statistically speaking). So I guess what I'm saying is that all those pieces are replaceable, Nash is not.

Better be a hell of a prospect. Otherwise might as well keep Grabo. What's it gonna cost $4.75-5.5 million. Anywhere in there depending on the term. I don't see the point in "saving" the cap space and acquiring a 2nd and a medium prospect.

I mean we traded a 2nd and a prospect (who had just been drafted in the 5th round of the '08 draft) to acquire Grabovski when he was unproven. Now Grabo is somewhat established and the return for him hasn't gone up in 3 and a half years?

I agree. Gardiner is something special in my mind, and I like how he seems to be improving weekly.

And I flip flop on trading for Nash. Today I'm on the side of not going after him and dealing our cap flexibility a blow.

I would actually go so far as to say top prospect and a 1st. It's the only way it makes sense to move Grabovski in my opinion.

As much as it would be great to land NAsh(for the right price), IMO, Gardiner being involved, lessens me wanting to acquire him, I mean if Subban is a generational talent, well gardiner is at least a H.O.F'er. Seriously though, I don't want him moved, this is a guy who anchors your power play without being a defensive liability for the next 10 yrs.

The problem for the Leafs is that the market doesn't have a huge amount of talent right now. I say that as I don't expect a lot of the "names" being tossed about to actually move. This in turn increases Grabos value in my eyes. You can see the over payments, like you said. If that is the case I am not sure they have a choice but to move him. Worst case scenerio, right or wrong if he isn't moved, Kadri slides into the postion. That stretch of games should tell the Leafs what they have in him at that spot.

I'm with you here...too much talk about getting into the playoffs. We need guns that you only get drafting 1-2-3. We ain't gettin' that so....as Burke said when he came in...."we're going a different route". Trade anyone if it gets you a bigger gun...or a hopeful.
