Unnamed Eastern team in race for Kovalchuk

An unnamed Eastern Conference team is competing with the Kings, Canucks and Bruins in trying to trade for Thrashers forward Ilya Kovalchuk.

The Los Angeles Times, in reporting on the Kings’ interest in the upcoming unrestricted free agent, does not name the fourth team, but previous reports have said the Islanders and Devils each have varying levels of interest.

Kings GM Dean Lombardi wouldn’t discuss Kovalchuk with writer Helene Elliott, but said he’s not against adding a “rental” player for the playoff push.

“I think I can safely say we are actively trying to improve this team. For the first time as a general manager you kind of get excited,” Lombardi said.

The report says, “Kovalchuk has been unable to agree with the Thrashers on a new contract and reportedly wants upward of $10 million a year for 10 years. Teams that hoped to talk to him to gauge his interest in signing a long-term deal reportedly have been rebuffed by Thrashers GM Don Waddell.”

The Leafs should offer Kovalchuk money under the table to sign with the Leafs.

trading for Kovalchulk will COST alot of assets and then u gotta sign him which he is stated that he WILL test the FA market if he dosent get his desired 10 million per for 10 years….. thats risky

    – NYI wont get him without Tavares (or) multiple unprotected draft picks included

    – New Jersy would be risking their stable team and u wont get Kovalchulk for a  bunch of 3rd rounders. im talking the likes of Travis Zajac, Jamie Langunbruner or prospcts like Patrice Cormier, possibly a draft pick or two too.

    – LA is looking at possible Jack Johnson, Dustin Brown Jared Stall etc….

any team that gives that much for him as a rental is dumb…. if ur gonna trade for him u better be ready to hand him him 10 year 100 Million dollar deal.

*** i meant Brayden Schenn not Jared Stall……

How could you not include Chicago in the mix.  A Kovalchuk pickup would be a great salary dump cover:

    ATL: Kovalchuk + Armstrong
CHI: Bolland + Barker + 1st round pick

and could single handily destroy all the chemistry the team has
