****UPDATE**** Isles Hunt for McLaren

According to Newsday and TSN, the Isles have emerged as the leading candidate to land Kyle McLaren. Boston which has had goalie troubles recently asked for Rick DiPietro, but that was turned down by the Islanders. Boston also has interest in Brad Isbister, however Isbister has been nursing a sore ankle and will be sidelined for the next 10-14 days.

A 3 way deal that involved Tampa fell through. The newspaper reports the Bruins recently turned down an offer from the Tampa Bay Lightning of Fredrik Modin straight up for McLaren. The 3 way deal would have sent McClaren to the Isles, Roman Hamrlik to Tampa and Modin and possibly Kubina to Boston.

I just can’t wait to see this McLaren trade coming. We’ll see who is the smarter of the two GM’s.

  2. big_booty says:

The Isles are telling themselves right now that they need another defenseman after being schooled by Philadelphia last night.

I doubt McLaren would be able to help them very much, though.

Boston may indeed need DiPietro, but Mad Mike Milbury is deviating from his normal bipolar self and holding on to the youngster. It’s anyone’s guess as to how long he will do so.

Hamrlik, Jonsson, Aucoin, and Cairns were a combined minus-8 in last night’s contest, and were dominated by the Flyers’ forecheck. Pavel Brendl’s goal was the result of a horrible outlet pass by Aucoin. This defensive unit is not nearly as good as it should be.

Adding McLaren too the mix might only prove to be a short-term fix. He’s not the most popular locker room personality. He also hasn’t played the game in quite a while. His injury history also plays against him. While he would bring a physical presence, that’s not really something that the Isles need. They need more sound defense and better passing. They also need power play help.

Giving up on DiPietro for McLaren just makes no sense.

  3. Enchilada says:

Could someone wake me up when McLaren is really traded.

  4. Aetherial says:

I was wondering about dipeitro and Isbister for Maclaren and Lapointe?

I think the Isles would be crazy to do it though, especially at Lapointe’s price!

  5. big_booty says:

    I wouldn’t do that, either.

The Isles would be foolish to give up on two youngsters with loads of potential for an overpaid grinder and an oft-injured whiner.

The Bruins are kicking themselves for signing Lapointe to that deal.

  6. Sands says:

I would have taken Modin ina sec.

  7. peanut_butter_shelf says:

Izzy for McLaren makes sense for the Isles but I doubt that Boston would care for it. Problem is Boston needs a goalie in return. Problem with that is the only teams that have decent goaltending available aren’t in the market for a defensemen(i.e. Carolina).

I have read comments about the Isles defence being shaky due to last night’s performance against Philly. The real problem in that game was Garth Snow. 3 of the 4 goals were outside shots that beat him to the far side. He shouldn’t have been in there. Unless Ozzie is hurt, which I am not aware of, he should have been in net. He is HOT right now and they have a soft game coming up against Atlanta.

Snow is an issue and Ozzie won’t be around too much longer. No way does Milbury trade Dipietro and keep his job. He has made that mistake too many times with goaltenders(LUONGO).

  8. bruinfan37 says:

If the Bruins are going to trade for a goalie, they are going to trade away grahame or shields with it. They won’t have one of them as a #3 goalie. They have Thomas for that. And from the little he has played, hes pretty impressive

  9. nskerr says:

Snow wasn’t at his best last night, but the whole team really was to blame. In general though, the D has been exceptional lately. Hamrlik and Aucoin although -3 last night have anchored the PK which has killed off something like 102 of 110. Another strong d-man would be great but the Isles need a top winger to help Yashin and Weinhandl.

  10. hatterson says:

This reminds me a lot of the Lindros situation a couple years ago. Both are a result of a stuborn GM and a player that isn’t signed. All very pathetic if you ask me.

  11. Leaf_Expert says:

The Islanders are my pick for the next McLaren team…

A trade was going to happen with these teams about a week ago but complications did grow due to the injury of Isbister.

Kenny Jonsson is everything the Bruins need on the blue line and would bring the extra offense needed….

The same goes for Isbister on the forward side of things but he does lack the extra offense…Hes young though and can still develope that aspect.

These are the two main names the Bruins would get for McLaren. Both in which would be terrific for the Bruins, but Kenny Jonsson would be the better pick up.

But the more likely name to choose is Isbister…

  12. big_booty says:

While I agree with your assessment of Garth Snow, he wasn’t the only thing that went wrong last night.

Like I said before, Brendl’s goal was a direct result of a giveaway by Aucoin at the blueline. The second goal, by Roenick, was the result of the defenders not getting back in time on a short-handed rush – they were too pre-occupied with being quarterbacks (I think it was Jonsson and Hamrlik). When Marty Murray scored, it was because the defender who was supposed to stick to him (forget who it was) was too far back behind the blueline, leaving Murray with a lot of ice to work with and an uncontested shot. Lastly, Desjardins’ final goal was the result of a long outlet pass at the end of a power play, with Roenick finding Handzus coming out of the box when an Isles defender should have been there to cut it off.

Yes, Snow did get beat by outside shots, but it’s the defense that allows those shots to happen in the first place. Snow also had to deal with odd-man rushes, for which he shouldn’t be heald at fault – those in front of him screwed up.

Blame Snow all you want, but he alone does not shoulder this loss – the entire team does, especially the defensemen.

  13. mikster says:

Modin….meh, injury prone and not worth giving up much for. I know i can get someone better than Modin in return for McLaren….heck, i’d rather get a prospect.

  14. mikster says:

Murray came from the neutral zone though, that’s not where defensemen belong, unless it’s Poti 😉

  15. big_booty says:

The Rangers leading scorer who is also minus-6?

Yup, that’s where he belongs alright.

  16. peanut_butter_shelf says:

I can definitely agree that the rest of the Isles had some blame but I still feel as though it would have been a completely different game had Osgood been in. He is much better on his angles. The first goal was no doubt Aucoin’s fault. But goal 2 and 3 I place complete blame on Snow. He has got to be able to handle the initial outside shot. Not the backdoor passes and the rebounds, I am talking about the 30+ footers that he was out of position on. The 3 goal difference allowed Philly to set up in a suffocating trap the Isles simply could not break.

My main question is why was Snow in net when Osgood is hot, the team is hot and they are playing the leader of there division who they trailed by only 9 points going into last night’s game. Especially with a couple days off prior and a day off after before playing the league’s worst, Atlanta. If you must rest Osgood, do it against Atlanta. The only thing I can think of is that Snow once played in Philly, and I guess he has had a couple of strong outings against Philly in recent past.

  17. peanut_butter_shelf says:

I don’t see the Isles packaging Jonsson for McLaren. Kenny has been Mr. Reliable for the Isles and is only getting more solid by the day. Look for the Isles to package a #4 or 5 Defensemen with Izzy if they have to throw in a D-man.

Possibly Cairns or even Martinek who has a ton of potential if he can stay healthy in the NHL.

  18. mikster says:

Had a +3 with Leetch when they the team was playing worse before. Leetch a +5. Proves Leetch knows how to play defense.

  19. mikster says:

Tarnstrom, Mezei….next Martinek? Jesus….the Isle’s are the best team that gives away young talent.

  20. wingerxx says:

finally someone who agrees with a the few and proud of us that know Leetch can play D! The Leetch-Poti pairing would have been a disaster otherwise.

  21. wingerxx says:

They are that…and McCabe, Berard, Salo, etc. before those guys. I’m very afraid that if they deal Isbister, he will turn into a real star elsewhere. Ditto for DiPietro. Sather was right, Milbury is a real bear on his young talent. If he deals Jonsson for McLaren, it is a real downgrade for the Isles. I wouldn’t even trade Isbister for him. In fact, if I were Milbury, I don’t know who I could comfortably trade for Kyle McLaren, and feel good about the trade in the end.

  22. mikster says:

They were good when the Rangers were not even scoring goals, now they know how to score goals…and finall Lindros and Holik have been hot. had Leetch stayed healthy, Poti and Leetch would have a nice +/-.

  23. mikster says:

Betruzzi was a mule though, and he didn’t take dirt from anyone. Isbister is still a sissy….with and without the puck. Sure he has skills, but he will never be a Bertuzzi type player. Right now he is a good 3rd liner, still a baby though…doesn’t get much involved in scraps.

  24. MantaRay says:

A friend of mine just called me to say the Izzy for Mclown trade was made, but I can’ t find any confirmation.

If so, this was a steal by Boston.

Isbister has the potential to be another Bertuzzi, while Mclaren is a #5 defensemen on a good team.

I believe Mclown was a Milbury draft pick while he was GM in Boston. Dumb, dumb move on the Island.

Just when you though the Isles would be a threat they do something stupid like this. Bad, bad move.

  25. gmg316 says:

You are absolutly right man. I have been saying that ever since the middle of December that Grahame will not be able to carry this teams load the whole season. I would like to see either DiPetro or Jeff Hackett in a B’s uniform, but I really can’t see McLearen in a Habs uniform given the situation of the playoffs last year. Kyle McLearn is the thorn in the side of the Habs, similar to Claude Lemieux for the Bruins (and most other teams). If I were going to make a trade, I would trade Kyle and grahame and possibly a foward for a goalie and a foward. Isbister and DiPetro would be nice, but it’s kinda like the Red Sox trying to trade nothing for Bartolo Colon.

  26. gmg316 says:

Milbury did not draft McLearen while he was in Boston. McLearen was drafted just after Milbury left. I believe it was when Steve Kasper or Brian Sutter was coaching.

  27. wingerxx says:

If this deal has or is happening, hopefully, for the Isle’s sake, a winger from Bonton is coming with McLaren, because this leaves the Isles with another hole in the winger slots. I’ve always thought New York could benefit more from adding a decent scoring winger of McEachern’s ilk, or something along those lines, than shoring up their defense.

  28. wingerxx says:

i don’t know…Bertuzzi in his early days was along Isbister’s lines right now. He sleepwalked through quite a lot of games. And you just never know with big guys like Isbister…I’m not going to call him a potential Bill Guerin/Todd Bertuzzi or anything…but guys like Isbister can crank it up to the next level with another team, or they can fall back as a career minor leaguer. Its really hard to say. I wouldn’t call him a bust or anything just yet…he can still he a decent 2nd line player. I agree, its taking him a bit too long to find his game…but…I just have a bad feeling about the Isles letting him go.

  29. slipnaughtyboy says:

I agree with everything except the Mclaren comment. He is not a #5 on a good team… besides maybe 2 or 3 teams (Col, NJ, maybe 1 or 2 others) in the league he’d be at minimum a top 3.

  30. Leaf_Expert says:

Well sources are saying Isbister will be traded to the Bruins….

I, the “Expert” am confirming a deal to be done within the next 48 hours….

  31. NYIchooch75 says:

Excuse me, you’re a Ranger fan right…? Weight, Amonte, Cloutier, Kim Jonsson…….shall I go on?

Now that’s the pot calling the kettle black!

  32. NYIchooch75 says:

First of all, Milbury has already said he would never trade Jonsson. Second, Jonsson is 10 times a better player than McLaren. Third, I am so pissed off if the Isles trade for McLaren. O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D!

  33. NYIchooch75 says:

I can’t say I’m too disappointed that Isbister is going to be traded, but why couldn’t it be for a real player. The Islanders have Torres, Hunter and Mapletoft who may bring more energy to the ice than Isbister, but for this fucking guy? C’Mon, Mike! Gimme a break, there is no reason to make a trade now. The team is playing so well lately. McLaren is a piece of shit, and he doesn’t help the team at all. He is waaaay overpaid, and overrated. We need wingers, scorers, someone else on Yashin’s line besides Weinhandl and Claude LaPointe (love ya Claude, but you’re a 4th liner, and a damn good one at that!). I can only hope that Milbury has another team somewhere to take McLaren for a scoring winger.

  34. wingerxx says:

yep i’m a ranger fan. and i won’t defend anything Neil Smith did, the guy was a fool, as far as I’m concerned. but lets not over-do anything Milbury has done with his young talent. Although I will admit Smith was over the top compared to Milbury with the names you’ve given. and i agree, Jonsson for McLaren would be terrible for the Isles. i wouldn’t even give Isbister him, although that may sound scrooge-like.

  35. wingerxx says:

agree completely…the isles need help up front more than they do on the blue line. but McLaren wouldn’t hurt the isles i don’t think…but they’re looking in the wrong place for help, if this deal goes down.

  36. NYIchooch75 says:

Yeah I agree, but with exception of the Luongo trade, which wasn’t a total loss since Parrish is scoring (we still lost the deal), most of his moves were salary dumps.

  37. NYIchooch75 says:

God, I hope this isn’t true…I like Isbister, but he is frustrating at times. So much talent. But McLaren. This is almost like the Turgeon for Kirk Muller deal. You just know it’s wrong.

  38. wingerxx says:

i know what you mean bud…that deal infuriated me too…and we’re not alone in our opinions either…I for one, really hope this trade does not happen.

  39. wingerxx says:

i know what you mean bud…that deal infuriated me too…and we’re not alone in our opinions either…I for one, really hope this trade does not happen.

  40. wingerxx says:

Very good points….Smith never had any excuse like that 🙂

  41. IslesFan11 says:

The Isles need two key elements in order to possibly go deeper into the playoffs. A crease clearing defenseman and a scoring left winger.

If they can get one of the two for just Isbister……..DO IT!!! Isbister has no hands. He’s a rebound guy, he doesn’t take wrist shots or slap shots from the slot. And when he does, they’re right at the goalie. This guy isn’t half the player Bertuzzi was when he was here. The biggest difference from the two would be Isbister’s total lack of creativity.

McLaren could be paired next to Kenny Jonsson and keep opponents from taking runs at Jonnson. Ge’ll lessen the minutes played by Hamrlik, Aucoin, and Jonsson(all near or over 30 a game) and he plays the body.

The Isles have lacked that big physical presence on the blueline since they dealt Chara and believe me, it’s very, very noticeable.

  42. hockeywhore says:

the Islanders would be retarded to trade Dipietro. He is going to be amazing and thats far from what Islanders need is to have Mad Mike deal yet another potential gifted first rounder.

  43. big_booty says:

    Just shut up already.

  44. MantaRay says:

The deal apparently was agreed in principle, but is being put on hold due to Isbisters injury which I understand will be two weeks.

  45. MantaRay says:

If McLaren were on the Devils he would be playing in Albany. He could not cut the top 6 in NJ.

He is a #5 on a good team, last season in Boston he was #5 behind Sweeney, Boyton, Gill, and O’Donnell. He was #6 when they tried to break in Girard.

  46. Tradedude says:

blah blah blah, all this iffy jiffy about mclaren, i’ve heard this rumor about a week and a half ago, and the latest i’ve heard that was boston called it off, so i doubt anything will result into this, if does, it will take a while.

  47. SpittinChicklets says:

Bingo…That was indeed the reason why we saw Snow in net.. He had 2 really strong outings against his former mates, including a stellar 1 nothing shut out. Go figure, they rest Ozzie, and loose with snow. Should have rested ozzie against the Thrash instead.

  48. SpittinChicklets says:

Yes, the Isles are definately one of the best, if not the best team at giving away good young projected talent in the NHL Ask any team that has dealt with them in the past… AKA: Todd Bertuzzi anyone..

  49. SpittinChicklets says:

True, the Isles miss a big earth moving defensemen in front of there own net. McLaren can proivde some of that for sure, but I wouldn’t count on him for much else. As for Izzy, well, he’s not Todd B.. I watched Bertuzzi play just about every home game back on the Island when he was there. Great potential, but didn’t show it till he had already become trade bait, and we all know how that turned out. Izzy, isn’t nearly the scrapper Bert was, or as willing to mix it up, as opposed to just playing physical. How many times can you turn on the jets to the outside b-4 every defensemen in the leagued knows what your gonna do. Trade him, but don’t look for McLaren to help out offensively, the Isles need help up front.. Help for Yashin.. Get some more goals fellas..!!

  50. hevidom says:

I agree with you 100%. I watch every islander game, and izzy has no creativity with the puck whatsoever. He is a soft power forward. If you can bring in a big defensemen to take some minutes off Aucoin’s hands, you got to do it. Then we’ll be in position to deal Rick D or one of the d-men for a real finisher to pair with Yash.
