Veteran Edmonton Oilers winger resigned to being dealt by the team in the next few months
It’s likely, if not a certainty, that Ales Hemsky is down to his last two months in Edmonton.
Of course, the Czech winger has been rumoured to have one foot out the door for about five years now and still ends up at Oilers training camp every fall.
At every trade deadline, every NHL draft and during every one of the hockey club’s annual early summers, Hemsky is the guy everyone expects will be gone.
The Oilers even told him he they were moving him last summer. He and Shawn Horcoff both met with Craig MacTavish and they all agreed it would be best for everyone if the veterans and the team went their separate ways. No hard feelings, just a welcome change of scenery for both sides.
So they said their goodbyes and waited for the new addresses.
Horcoff went to Dallas and Hemsky reported to training camp for an 11th season with the only team he’s ever known.
“I came here and I was happy I came here,” said the 30-year-old, who’ll play his 662nd game, including playoffs (remember those?) Tuesday in Los Angeles.
“And I just tried to play the game and not think about anything else.”
