What's Wrong With The Western Conference?

The West used to be known as the speed and high scoring conference, the birth place of Gretzky and Kurri, Bure, Yzerman, Selanne, Fleury, Denis Savard, even the Maple Leafs teams of the 80’s had the GREAT Rick Vaive, who had 3 consecutive 50 goal seasons.

But this season Western Conference is being Dominated by the East. The West only has 6 players in the top 30 for points, and only 1 player in the top 17 Igninla, Thornton, Marleau, Pronger, Frolov and Selanne… The West have only 1 player in the top 10 for goals with Ryan Smyth sitting in #8 with 15 goals, and they have 9 total in the top 30, Iginla, Marleau, Naslund, Rolston, Sykora, Kuntiz (Hello) Frolov and Selanne….In Shots they have again only 9 total in the top 30, 1 player in the top 14 in spot #8 with Rolston who has 88 shots, with Blake, Zetterberg, Hejduk, Svatos, Iginla and Selanne rounding out the top 30.

Only Jerome Iginla and Teemu Selanne are the players in top 30 in each category (Points, Goals, Shots)

The West has 3 players in the top 10 in assists with #3 Pronger (23), #7 Henrik Sedin (21) and #8 Teemu Selanne (20), but then only have 3 more in the top 30 for a total of 6 players in the top 30 in assists, Kopitar, Kariya and Tanguay.

The only player in the Western Conference to be in the top 4 in all categories for Points, Asssits, Goals and shots is Teemu Selanne!!! WAY TO GO TEEMU.

So is Teemu Selanne the best offensive player in the Western Conference??? The stats say he is the best all around (and he’s only making $3.75 million) and he was dynamite last year when he came in the top 30 in all 4 categories last season. He is #7 overall for points in the NHL and leading the Western Conference in that category.

So is Teemu the best in the West??

I don't think being the highest ranked in the Western Conference necessarily makes him the best offensive player in the conference.  I'm sure a lot of it comes from the team he has as well as the teams other players don't have.  If Selanne was swapped with Markus Naslund I'm sure Naslund would have more points than Selanne right now.

Playing with either Neidermayer or Pronger behind you seems like it would move the focus of the forwards more toward offense, rather than worrying about the defense or making mistakes.

Is Selanne playing very well offensively and is he one of the better offensive players in the west? Yes, he is.  But he's the best because of circumstance, not because of skill or talent.

To Vancouver : Big Bert, Horton, Auld
    To FLO : Luongo, Naslund

  3. PhanufRoxs says:

We already traded Bert, and Auld for Luongo (and the Nuck's got by far a better deal) so it would be Nazzy, for Horton… I don't think so… and anyways Bert is a free agent at the end of the year, and if Vanciuver wanted him they will wait till July 1st, your gonna get insulted by the rest of the people on this site

The reason the West players aren't getting as many points is because we have better goalies, and d man for sure (but yes the East have better forwards) I guarentee if we had the East defense and goalies instead of what we got now it would be most West players leading the NHL in scoring. Plus the teams in the West have better recorded then the one's in the East usually so we get lower draft picks

Yes perfect comment. Because a lot of East teams have been doing very poorly the last few years they have been picking up all the young guns. Not to mention the cap allowed them to have a chance at signing players and not having to compete with detroit or colorado pre-cap. Soon the East will start to do better than the West and we'll start getting the higher picks.

Detroit and Colorado picking up Free agents was not worst than Philadelphia, Toronto, and New York R.

  9. Aetherial says:

Could just be a fluke, with the east opting for a more offensive style, free wheeling game.

Or, it could be that Staal, Heatley, Crosby, Malkin, Kovalchuk, Jagr, Hossa, Spezza, Briere, Afinogenov, Ovechkin, LeCavalier … are all in the east.

… which sucks with a schedule that only allows western teams to see these guys every couple years.

what is the stat for total goals scored for each conference?  Is it possible the west is just a more balanced scoring league?

I see this trade as highly likely because Nonis is a dumbass.

  12. gg_idiot says:

That is a lame excuse. How about this scenario: The goalies in the west just look better because the forwards in the west suck so much.

  13. gg_idiot says:

No, I think its that the west sucks

  14. gg_idiot says:

This still doesn't excuse Nash, Iginla, Hemsky, Thornton, Marleau, Cheechoo, Naslund, Sakic, Hejduk, Havlat (Although he'd be up there in the top 5 if he wasn't injury prone), Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Kariya, Modano, Gaborik (also a skating bandaid), Demitra, Nagy, Doan, Conroy, and Tanguay for all sucking.

Also all players that the East fans would like to see more often.

TheDugg1er and Nonnis are dumbasses. next time don't type a million HAHA's. and what was the joke? Bert's got a broken back and Auld has been terrible, and Luongo has keeped the Canuck's in almost every game. Naslund is a great player, and Horton won't ever be good enough to be a 4th overall pick.
