Where are Drury and Brier Going?

Drury and Briere are Free Agents at the end of the year and if Buffalo loses them even one, they could be a much less threat to the NHL, I doubt we will see both Drury and Breir wearing Sabers jerseys next year, but where will they go?

Here are a few teams that may be interested in buying them depending on who they lose, or if they lose someone:

Montreal
Toronto
Ottawa
Pittsburgh
Edmonton
Calgary
NYI
Phoenix

Where do you think they will go?

Briere To Edmonton, Dont expect the Leafs to pick up either of them.

  2. sakurulz says:

i expect drury to stay in buffalo and briere in mtl…not cuz im a hab fan but everything points in that direction….not cuz he a frenchie either! style fits him, not too far from sabres! money would have to be great and better than other places(somewhere between 6.5 to 7M a yr) but for the rest i really have faith briere will come to mtl….if sabres were to keep briere, i think drury would be to 1 of those : TO,colorado, cgy!

  3. sakurulz says:

why the hell and HOW the hell would edmonton give him the big buxcks for?they clearly showed they lacked defense and this summer they have to invest big time in defense before forwards!i also think smyth will go back there so forget briere to edm!

  4. sakurulz says:

just to continue my answer, as a habfan, one team scares me most in briere race it's the flyers! with biron there, a lot of capspace and in need of a first centerman, they could be the ones to win the bid for briere! i hope he comes to mtl tho…

  5. 27roenick97 says:

regardless of whether biron weighs in on this, its the buying power the flyers have that should be what you–and anybody else in the race for either of these guys services–should be concerned with.  The flyers have a need and Homer has the cap space to give either an offer they cant refuse.

  6. mikster says:

One of them will stay, i don’t see both leaving.

I’d take Drury over Briere any day, but not for such a high price. The guy needs to go to a team that lacks a real captain…a real leader.

I see two scenarios. 1, Drury stays, Briere goes. 2, Briere stays, Drury to Washington.

  7. pratt25 says:

Chris Drury grew up a New York Rangers fan

  8. modk09 says:

gainey wont give briere 6.5-7M in this lifetime. hes signed 3 big money contracts since joinging the habs: Theo (sucks, gone) Kovalev (Sucks, will be gone), and Saku (I love him and im sure some of you will rag on this post for saying hes good)

with that record, hell be gunshy just like the Caps have been since signing Jagr.

if he comes here, and i hope he doesnt, itd only be for $5M

  9. modk09 says:

one will land in Phili for sure, theyll get to play with Knuble and Gagne and put up big numbers to compensate for their big paycheck…

i think both will be overpaid but the flyers will be happy to take one of them especially if they get a goalie, then look for them to make a run at the playoffs next year

We won't hold that against him.

  12. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

    hehe, good one

  13. NHLman says:

What about Afinogenov? They will most definitely lose him and probably Briere. The Sabres will not be as good next year.

  14. sakurulz says:

gainey and boivin(president)announced that they were finally able to spend big money to attract a top UFA….im sure 7M is doable! especially to bring a guy like briere who will bring so many things to this team which they need!

  15. chanman says:

Drury to stay, Briere to Washington where they will toss 7 mil at him and 100 pts along AO.

Connolly will take over brieres spot in Buffalo nicely, and Stafford & Paille can pick up slack as rookies coming up who can score. Drury won't have a fantastic season like this again, I don't think, but he wont stay in Buffalo b/c of his scoring ability…this guy is a leader to pay for.

  16. Williams1505 says:

Bring them to the burgh we'll take em!

  17. modk09 says:

we need size, he doesnt bring that, and hell attract no more than 5.5 on the open market, no reason to pay 7 when Thornton, Iginla, etc etc etc are all UFAs next year

  18. sakurulz says:

yes of course cuz it's true superstars are knockin' on gainey's door to come sign here!but would u think…u honestly and truly believe there's the slightest chance an iggy or a thornton would want to come to mtl?but honestly….

  19. tacitus says:

I'd keep Briere over Drury but for some reason people think Drury s better. I like the Briere to the caps. If im Briere i will wanna go where the money is and a decent linemate which rules out Toronto, Montreal. Still sucks how a team like Buffalo who didn't buy there team has to be punished by the cap.

  20. BruMagnus says:

They can play wing, no problem.

  21. Archion113 says:

Funny that you have NYI and Phoenix up their and not even an honorable mention fo teh flyers.

The leafs have no shot at him.

  22. wingsfan13 says:

drury will probably stay because he's is clutch.  i know cuz i'm a wings fan.  briere will go to either NYI, Vancouver, or Mtl.  I'm picking montreal.

  23. Les-Habitants says:

I'm surprised more ppl aren't saying the Flyers, however, I personally think that if Gomez hits the open market, the Flyers will be the ones most likely to step up and provide him the contract he wants.

Drury and Briere would be amazing on any team, and as a Habs fan, I'd love either one of them here.  That said, Buffalo might just be able to keep them both

  24. 2006 says:

Why would they lose Afinogenov?  The Sabres will probably lose Briere but their depth will make up for it and they will probably have Connolly back for the whole year.  I would bet on them dominating the East again for sure.

  25. davey says:

Yeah, I don't know where that came from. Max is locked up in a multi-year deal. Anyway, given his results in the past two post seasons I'd have no problem giving up his salary for a draft pick if it got us a step closer to keeping Danny and Dru. If not its Dru before Briere, Briere showed up for a contract year and it serves the Sabres right for letting him go to arbitration in the first place, let alone not signing him to a multi-year deal. Fact is both had career year years, Drury is more Buffalo's style of player and will probable be available for (roughly) 5 mil on the open market while Briere will get (around) 7mil. As for the debate that Connolly will fill the void left by Briere, no. I hate to say it, but Connolly is a hit away from retirement. Need proof? He's missed 2 entire seasons of the 5 years he's been in Buffalo (one of which was a lockout year). What team in it's right mind (Buffalo included) is willing to risk millions on a player who's only available half of the time besides Philly/Nashville (had to get the Forsberg crack in there).

    what a dumb post

they have MAx for two more years at $3.5 million ($3.3333million cap hit).

Adam Mair, Zubrus, MIchael Ryan, Ty Conklin and Teppo Numinen are the only UFAs, with Briere and Drury, for Buffalo.

this coming from a Leafs fan…..Here's a good one…When's the last time the Leafs won the Cup? Now that's a good one!

Briere was snubbed by the Habs early in his career and may choose not to go there.

The $$$ Cap is just a set of rules an NHL GM needs to learn how to deal with in order to be successful… No one is getting punished by the cap!  I don't see Lou in NJ having any problems with the cap???  He found a way to keep "all" of his players this year.  I'm sure Buffalo could have locked up all their free agents to long term contracts way before they ever reached free agency.  But they did not and here we are now!  The only thing punishing Buffalo is their GM's Stupidity!  Clearly this was the Sabers GM's plan to lose some of the very top players in hockey to free agency without any compensation???  Or the poor sap is just completely overwhelmed by the salary cap and how to deal with such a complex thing to him?  So,,, the way you should have worded your statement insted is, "…….. punished by a GM who is not competent enough to logically handle a salary cap!"

  31. WYflyerfan says:

Pittsburg would not be able to afford them. They are tetering on bankrupcy and are going to have to pay their young players real contracts in a year or two. Free agents will most likely want a 3 or 4 year contracts. You need to worry about second tier free agent players.

  32. CrosbyMalkin66 says:

Pittsburgh is not going to spend between 6-7 million dollars on either centerman who would literally be 3rd or 4th line centers on the pens …. I mean think about it… both Crosby and Malkin are better than those two and hell i even think Staal will be better in the next couple of years… so why spend that kind of money and then convert them to wing of something when you could spend a million less and get Paul Kariya!! DUMB

  33. sakurulz says:

he was by like 29teams…i doubt he'll go back to phoenix so he has to sitgn with one of the teams who snobbed him!

  34. sakurulz says:

    decent linemate eh???
so he should go play in WSH and tank seasons to get 100pts…
go to chicago play with havlat again to finsih playin in april…
go to columbus play with nash and fight for 12th is much smarter…

at least, if he goes to tl or TO he makes them contenders for not only just playoffs but top spot in northeast….and eventually better cup chances!

  35. iginla012 says:

That's gets old after a while.

  36. FlyersFan20 says:

I agree, if for some reason the Flyers cant land Gomez then they will most definitely go for the player the sabers don’t keep. They need a #1 center and Gomez playmaking ability will fit in perfectly with gags and knuble.

  37. FlyersFan20 says:

Penns will never land Paul Kariya. they dont have the cap space and they need to start planing now on resigning players. One or two years from now most of the rookie contracts will be up. Dont be suprized when the rookies starts acting like pricks Crosby 8 million Malkin 7 and Stall 6.

  38. chanman says:

Darcy is one of the best GMs in the league, and his trades and drafts testify to it. It's a shame he doesn't get more recognition for what he has done.
You know zero about this. It has to happen that you will lose players to UFA status. Buffalo has one heck of a future, even if they should have both of these guys walk.
You are terribly mistaken in this.

  39. UsedandAbused says:

    Philly!

  40. nurhachi says:

Read somewhere that Drury might want to play for one of the New York area teams. He could be offered some kind of ridiculous contract from the Islanders.

Also, I don't think Ottawa would be looking for another centre since Jason Spezza is locked up, the depth at the position with Fisher, Kelly and Vermette and the fact that the team may be looking for some cap space to extend Heatley's deal beyond next year.

  41. cecilturtle says:

For the most part I agree with what you just said…  Truth be told, I do not know anything about Darcy (is that even really his name?:) except that he has put together as good a roster of players as any elite team in the NHL.  What I expressed before was Darcy? either had a plan to lose some of the most talented NHL players to free agency or he was just stupid.  I'm not saying he is stupid for not signing them now, but for not doing so in the past.  Now if he tried to sign them, the GM would have to pay top dollar instead of the big hometown discount Buffalo could have secured last year.  But now at this point the Sabers almost have to let them walk.

But I also agree with you that Buffalo still has a great team set up for next year and beyond even presuming without "any" of their free agents resigning.  Also, I suppose that if the Sabers were having a horid season and were out of the playoff hunt…  Darcy? would have most likely traded off his free agents to be at the trade deadline, and seeing what other teams gave up in trade for top NHL players this year, Buffalo would have surly received a record number of draft picks and top prospects.  But obviously Buffalo is presently in the position to maybe win the cup, so he wisly kept the free agents to be and cut his loses for next year.

The Rangers "similarly" are most likely going to lose Nylander to free agency this year and Jagr is a free agent next year…  If the Sather really wanted to secure Jagr past next season, he would have most likely signed him by now or at the very latest before the start of training camp.  Personally I think slats will let them both walk (Jagr might very well plan on retiring, but assuming he does not retire…) With the plethera of young players advancing through the ranks, the Rangers will most likely let both players walk inorder to open up roster spots.  But Jagr and Nylander are much older (35 years old as of today) than the Sabers free agents who are all in their mid to late 20's.  I think Darcy? (might have?????) made a big time mistake by not securing his free agents to be, because they will be the NHL's Elite Top Players for many many more years to come.  Wow, sorry for being so long winded.  Peace!

LMAO! Talk about clueless!!! How are the Penguins "teetering on bankrupty?" They just signed what will probably end up being one of the most lucrative arena deals of any NHL team. Now at the same time I don't expect the Pens to be able to afford Drury or Briere, but they are by no means going bankrupt!

  43. imaginethat says:

well edmonton did finish wit hthe lowest goals for in the nhl so obviously they need some finishers, someone to play with hemsky. lowe is looking for two first liners. yeah they will look for defence maybe 1 like timonen. and a 4th or 5th defencemen, but once they are all healed up and gilbert and smid looking good it s offence. oilers have lots of cap room and you can bet they will take a shot at briere, before smyth.

  44. AHLoldie says:

Where do you get your information?  The Pens are NOT, and nowhere close to bankruptcy.  Their owner Ron Burkle is one of the wealthiest owners in the NHL.  Mario is now a minor holder in the team.  With the new arena deal, they will be able to compete with Comcast in Philadelphia.

  45. BruMagnus says:

"they dont have the cap space"

what a typical ignorant Flyers propaganda statement.

Crosby and Malkin makde almost $4 million now because of bonuses, and won't command max on their next contracts. Crosby may get 6-7 million a year for 5 years, Malkin will get 5-6 million for 3 years first.

  46. tacitus says:

Lou lost Scott Neidermayer when the cap was implemented. He couldnt even match the offers Niedermayer received. It is being punished by the cap

  47. tacitus says:

Im not mistaken, he loses players do to the cap that he prolly wouldnt want to lose. And when they lose Briere and Drury and dont win there division and dont win the cup again, i will be right

  48. tacitus says:

If Toronto's only major move is adding Briere, they still dont make the playoffs. Sorry thats just how bad the leafs are. The leafs maybe have 3 forwards who could make the sabres team, one player wont change them to much
