Who Will Be The Next Captain?

As we all know Detroit’s Steve Yzerman is one of the best captains in NHL history. Who is currently recovering from knee surgery and only has a 50/50 chance of coming back. When you look at what he did last year in the playoffs it only proves my point that he is a sensational captain. Who is loyal, brave, and, a marvelous hockey player and person. So the question I pose to everyone on the site is who do you think will be the next captain of the Detroit Red Wings? When you leave the name of the person you think will be the next captain explain why you think that.

I think it’s a tough call between Lidstrom and Fedorov. But, i think Lidstrom should get the C.

I really am starting to dislike Chelios. He criticzed the officials weeks ago yet they let him get away with too much.

He jabbed/speared on Barnaby’s face in front of both refs. He lost a battle to Lindros one on one breakway, fell down and hel Lindros’ stick preventing a scoring chance in front of the ref, yet no call there for…..for…..no reason. Plus, he criticized, whined, and complained the whole damn game. I am glad Holik pushed him hard enough against the boards and hurt him a bit.

Red Wings still remain the classiest NHL team though. They are a pure hockey team. Everything is there. Just an awesome team.

By the way, i thought Robitaille was just sucking wind yet the guy gets tons of chances but gets robbed. Dunham totally robbed him twice.

In the end, i have lots of confidence that Yzerman will be back. These old timers, like Gilmour, Andreychuk, Larionov, Chelios, Messier….these guys are mules.

They might get injured more often, but i doubt that today’s players are as tough as these guys. Yzerman played with one leg in last season’s playoffs, Messier with one arm last season….Gilmous just keeps beig a significant player everytime he says he might retire. WHy should he? He is awesome. Andreychuk is a tough guy as well. I think Yzerman will be back, he is stubborn and does not quit. Come on Steve!!! Come back.

Lidstrom though, should definitely get the C on his jersey.

It’s got to be either Nick or Shanny. Sergei is a good player, but he’s been very streaky in the past. Shanny is a vocal player and he fights for his teammates, while Nick is the best player in hockey. It would be a toss-up between these two guys. I think Lidstrom will get it because they want him to be a career Red Wing. So Lidstrom gets my nod.

  3. oil_drop says:

Well I think Legace should get the “C.” But really I think that Draper should get the “C.” I’m not a huge Wings fan but when ever I watch the Wings Draper and Maltby stand out. I would pick Draper over all the rest of the Wings cause he knows his role and plays it well. Although Daper probaly won’t get the “C” and all you diehard Wing fans will say “hell no you idiot.” But that is who I think should get it and probaly wont.

  4. JClark87 says:

Chelios can criticize the officials, they’re not good at all. He’s an established player in this league, he’s won Cups and trophies. Mario continues to whine about officiating, so why can’t Chelios pipe in and try to get the hitting back in the game?

One thing about tonight’s game I noticed is Lindros is a big pussy. He had a nice hit on Maltby, but when McCarty gets in Eric’s face after he attempted a midsection spear on Maltby, he backed off. I would’ve loved to Darren beat his punk-a$$. Lindros can check, but like Chris Pronger, is a cheapshot artist. He uses his stick like he were a little guy. I can’t stand that.

  5. Bigman says:

chelios-shannahan-fedorov-fisher will be the next guys in the passing down to wear the ‘C’

    thx

I say Shanahan should get it. He can back up his words. Lidstrom is an awesome player but he is too quiet. Chelios is too dirty. In my opinion it’s the Canadian captains that are the best.

  7. Just-Checking-In says:

Actually that was McCarty that speared Barnaby, not Chelios. Of course, you didn’t mention that nice spear that Lindros delievered that was not called either. Also don’t forget the nice stick work slash that Barnaby delievered which wasn’t called. And how Barnaby acted like a rag doll when McCarty wanted to go with him.

Uhh, I kind of thought the Chelios falling down, holding the stick was quite obvious. It was to prevent the scoring chance, which it did.

I could of course mention Holik’s shot to Chelios which should have been a boarding call. And a couple of others.

If you want to talk about Captains in Detroit, that’s fine as well. But don’t complain about some calls in a game the Rangers were never really in.

  8. Mr_Nice says:

Is that why thereĀ“re so many Canadian captains?

Are the Swedish captains second best?(Sundin, Alfredson, Naslund and if i am not misstaken Nordstrom) are they captains just because thereĀ“re no suitable Canadian on their team?

  9. edmontonrules says:

That’s why the Canadian captains are more successful. They’re better. I’m not saying that Swedish people suck. They just haven’t had the success. Would you like me to name all the Canadian captains that have won The Cup? It would be a very long list and I don’t have the time.

  10. tsaler says:

Lidstrom, hands down. I don’t think he’d ever leave, and that’s what I like to see in a Captain.

I don’t like to see people like Eric Lindros coming to the Rangers and immediately getting the A. That’s horseshit, if you ask me.

  11. Habs4ever says:

I would pick Chelios as captain, but I think Lidstrom will get it.

  12. Robert says:

i am canadian too…but hey get ur head of ur a$$.

  13. mikster says:

Oh, i agree with Chelios criticizing the officials, i have been doing that a lot. BUT, these officials take his crap and avoid giving him penalties?

If i was a dork like Fraser, knowing that Chelios criticized us refs, i would be a total bitch to him.

Lindros was smart to not cause more havoc and avoid a penalty.

The cheap shot artist there was Maltby or McCarty to spear Barnaby in his mid section. That should have bee a 5 minute major and a game misconduct.

Lindros is a cheap shot, i know because i had to put up with watching his cheap shots in his Flyers years.

Lindros’ strength would crunch McCarty or Maltby anyway….but there was no need for him to put up with that and take a penalty.

  14. mikster says:

Chelios also speared Barnaby on his face before that.

Holik just gave a little shove to a falling Chelios.

Rangers were quite in it, especially in the 3rd…but again…too little too late.

Both teams basically had the same number of shots, hits, and Rangers won more face offs. They were in it…

  15. mikster says:

    You’re alive!!!

    Where have ya been?

  16. chaos83 says:

Well since goalies can’t be captains I highly doubt legace will get the C.

  17. ProngerBlues44 says:

Nicky Lidstrom. Not only is he a full-package, he is a great team leader and gets his team on a role every play he makes.

  18. aaron says:

I say Lidstrom will be. But Yzerman’s coming back, so the question’s irrelevent. :p

  19. JB24 says:

Well I don’t think Chelios should get it because he’s a whiner, he plays dirty, and I honestly don’t think he’s as good of a player as most people give him credit. I think someone like Lidstrom or Shanahan should get it, but no one would be able to replace Yzerman.

  20. Shutt_Kovalchuk_incarnate says:

based on his tenure alone, he’s been there longer than Lidstrom and obviously Chelios.

but being that Federov is still, in my opinion, the best player in the world, he should have the C, no doubt about it.

  21. slipnaughtyboy says:

    Lidstrom, it’s so obvious!

  22. AmericasteamRedWings says:

I don’t think that Chris would be the next captain….in fact, he and Yzerman could retire in the same off-season. I think they would give the “C” to a guy who will be around a bit longer.

A side note on Chelios…….is he really that dirty of a player, or do Canadians think he is dirty because he is a good American defenseman? Just a thought, why wouldn’t you say the same about, oh, Scott Stevens? Oh yeah…..he’s not dirty because, *gasp* he’s a Canadian-boy, eh?

  23. garry1221 says:

u do know he hasn’t been here that much longer than lidstrom…. one year doesn’t count for a whole lot in my book .. drafted the same year, came over 2 and 3 years after and have stuck here since, but it’s a toss up in my book, feds and lids would both be top notch candidates, i’d guess it’d go to feds, but i don’t think anyone would be disappointed if it went to lidstrom

  24. Fx says:

Sundin, Alfredsson and Naslund would be the best line combo.

  25. lovas84 says:

    Lidstrom and that’s final

  26. wingsrock34 says:

i not saying for right now but in the future when he does retire

  27. Rico71 says:

    Well…

Barnady gets what he receives. See the charge, with highstick on Juneau when the Habs whooped the Ranger$??? Think that was ok? He’s a cheapshot player and the pathetic Ranger$ should have lost by shutout. The only reason they managed to score was because they played 5 on 4 for about 30 seconds.

He should be suspended, but because he plays for a team like the Ranger$, he doesn’t. On the replay you can see the stupid ref looking at the hit and doing nothing. Call about playing fair.

  28. Rico71 says:

    *blink*

Best player in the world? Ooooooook. Maybe 5 games a year when he feels like it. Russian-syndrome.

    ‘Play-when-I-feel-like-it’.

  29. Rico71 says:

    Shanahan…’nuff said.

  30. Overtime says:

There’s a ton or leadership on Detroit, but if you want the best of the best, that would be Lidstrom. Why? Because you want a player that everyone respects, a player who leads by example, a player with class, a player with intelligence, a player with tremendous talent. Sure, Lidstrom is quiet. So was Yzerman. Stevie only addressed the team occassionally, but when he did, everyone listened. Lidstrom never takes a night off. Can you REALLY say that about Shanahan or Fedorov? Lidstrom took charge in the playoffs last year and ended up with the Norris, Conn Smythe, and Stanley Cup. He is clearly Detroit’s MVP.

My runner up would be Chelios, except he may only play for another year or two. Give Nick his due and Stevie, Thanks for the memories!!!

  31. Overtime says:

Wy are we spending so much time talking about the Red Wing-Ranger game when the topic here is who will be the next Red Wing Captain?

  32. Overtime says:

Are you referring to the same Brendan Shanahan who is currently minus -3 with the Red Wings? Hmmm.

  33. Rico71 says:

So what? Since when is the +/- important in choosing a captain?

Scott Stevens is -1 on a very good New Jersey team.

Mark Messier is -5…though he plays for the pathetic Ranger$.

Ron Francis is -1 on the Hurricanes.

All are great captains and all are in the minus category. So tell me…why mention Shanny’s -3? I thought being captain was about being a leader, someone to look up to?

  34. Overtime says:

Shanny takes nights off here and there – something I don’t think a captain should do. That contributes to his minus -3. Why aren’t there more minus -3 players on the Wings? How odd. I guess we can’t blame Scotty.

Why were Shanny and Fedorov constantly in Scotty Bowman’s dog house? What was it that Scotty saw that you don’t see? What he saw was a couple of players with tremendous potential, but players who often did not apply themselves. I agree with Scotty. Don’t get me wrong, Shanny and Fedorov are great players, but this is Nick Lidstrom’s team, not Fedorov’s team, and not Shanahan’s team. It might become Stevie’s team once again. Who knows? Right now, Lidstrom is the straw that stirs the drink.

  35. JB24 says:

Yes, he really is that dirty and I am Canadian but I hate Stevens and think is as cheap of a player as Chelios, but we weren’t talking about New Jersey, we were talking about Detroit. If we had’ve been talking about NJ I would have said the same thing about Stevens as I did about Chelios.

  36. Rico71 says:

    Possibly…

Though I really wish Yzerman remains captain and comes back to play. One of the greatest players to play the game.

Lidstrom would make a good captain…that’s for sure. I just prefer some canadian blood for the captaincy…call me biased here. *lol*

  37. Tradedude says:

    Choices:

    1) Fedorov (tremendous amount of skill, but not enough leadership)

    2) Shanahan (Proven scorer, veteran leadership, great qualities of a player, was the captain of the hartford whalers)

    3) Chelios (More of a funny guy, and a bitcher, not the right guy for a captain, was captain of the blackhawks though)

    4) Brett Hull (Sniper like you can’t believe it, pure scoring threat, leadership qualities all over the place, also the capatin of the st. louis blues, but this could be his last year if he don’t re-sign in the offseason)

    5) Nick Lidstrom (Was never a captain, has the leadership ability, not to mention his 2 consecutive norris champion winners, aiming for three, nominated for years before)

My opinion: Brett Hull has got to get it.

  38. merlin says:

Darren McCarty or Nick Lidstrom for sure just on their ability to be leaders on and off of the ice. Sergei Federov could have been and could still be the best player in the NHL if he would only put his ego and attitude aside and just play the game. He is the biggest pansy and whiner that I have ever seen. He is turning down a reported 50 million dollars over 5 years that the wings are offering. I say Trade Federov for 3 or 4 prospects or for 1 or 2 top notch players and let someone else have the problems. If he had half of the heart that Yzerman has he would have broke every record in the NHL or be well on his way.

  39. Bishop_420 says:

I say Shanny. He has declined in importance in the last year or 2, but things are gonna change soon. Yzerman is done (almost,) Luc and Hull are gone after this season. Lidstrom will go back to Sweden sooner than you think. That leaves Shanny as the only real choice. Plus, power forwards are the best captains. He might up his game, like the Messier of the not to distant past.

  40. redwingsfan says:

    Nick Lidstrom for sure
