Who will challenge Canada for gold?
There are several teams picked already, here are all the Olympic rosters I could find.
From Canada
Forwards: Sakic, Nash, Iginla, Gagne, St Louis, Lecavalier, Richards, Draper, Doan, Bertuzzi, Heatley, Thornton, Smyth.
Defense: Pronger, Blake, Foote, Niedermayer, Jovanovski, Redden, Regehr.
Goaltenders: Brodeur, Turco, Luongo
Notes on the team: I’m not as mad as I was before at this team, I guess I’m forgetting, Shanahan, Kariya, and CuJo all got a chance before, and Spezza, Staal, and Phaneuf will all get many more chances, this is the last chance for a few of these guys, including Draper, Doan, and possibley St Louis.
Team Germany
Forwards: Barta, Benda, Fical, Goc, Hackert, Hecth, Kathan, Kreutzer, Lewandowski, Martinec, Sturm, Ustorf.
Defense: Ehrhoff, Goc, Kopitz, Renz, Schauer, Schubert, Seidenberg, Sulzer.
Goaltenders: Kolzig, Greiss, Muller.
Notes on team: If this team wants to win a single game, they better hope Olaf Kolzig plays very well. There really isn’t much to this team because there aren’t many NHL players.
Team Kazakhastan
Forwards: Antropov, Alexandrov, Dudarev, Alexander Koreshkov, Evgeni Koreshkov, Ogorodnikov, Pchelyakov, Polishchuck, Samakhalov, Shafronov, Andrey Troschinskiy, Upper.
Defense: Argokov, Koledayav, Kovalenko, Pupkov, Shemelin, Tregubov, Alexei Troshinskiy, Vassilchenko.
Goalie: Kolesnik, Ogureshnikov, Yeremeyev.
Notes on team: It’s a truly sad day when your countries best hockey player is Nik Antropov….that really is all I can say…
Team USA
Forwards: Blake, Conroy, Cole, Drury, Gionta, Gomez, Guerin, Knuble, Modano, Parrish, Rolston, Tkachuck, Weight.
Defense: Liles, Schneider, Chelios, Leopold, Miller, Rafalski, Hatcher
Goaltenders: Dipietro, Esche, Grahame
Notes on team: This team could compete in 2010, but it won’t comete this year, with absent veterans such as Leetch, Roenick, Amonte, Leclair, and Halpern. Also young Devils defenseman Paul Martin, and Sabres forward Tim Connolly are missing.
Right now, the websites I’ve found only release pieces of the Swedish, Finnish, Czech, Slovakian, Swiss, Ukranian, Italian, and Latvian teams. The main core is out there, I’ll submit the full rosters as they become available.

CZECHS AND RUSSIANS WILL COMPETE WELL AGAINST CANADA BUT WILL COME UP SHORT SINCE CANADA HAS TOO MUCH DEPTH ON THEIR ROSTER.
The Czechs, Sweden and especially Russia are all going to be very dangerous. Canada is not a lock for the gold by any stretch. And you can’t count the U.S. out, even though Waddell did a terrible job selecting his team. I wouldn’t put the U.S in the same category as the other four nations though.
the finns lost Kipper so there goes a huge blow to the silver medal team from the world cup…my bet is canada sweden and russia in a dog fight but i think russia has the best chance….what a great team…..

Russia will DOMINATE the qualifying.

Who is Russia’s toughest player, a grinder.
It’s amazing that year after year the Russian Ice Hockey Directorate puts up a team of pure skill, with no heart. You would think that they would have learned by now that in modern Ice Hockey you need a checking line. None of that roster can check a coat, never mind Sundin or Sakic.
Actually Malkin is very good in his own zone and in the oppositions! they will prob look at him for checking line and when you look all their players are quite big and can throw their weight around when necessary
Khabibiulin and nabakov have both puller out of this team. Bryzgalov looks to be the goalie.

The Czechs and Swedes obviously. I dont think Russia really has a shot. Before, they used to be about the National team, and national pride, now they are all about money, lockouts, and showing up when they want. The old guys must be disgusted with this, they need to turn that program around, maybe Bure can do it.

I think they played hard so the NHL scouts watching would sign them to big $$$$ contracts when they could escape.
If I was a Russian back in the “glory days” I’d have wanted to get out of dodge too! I can’t say that I blame those players one bit. Guys like Mogilny and Fedorov have done their bit for king and country. They’re going to be a scary team this year.
Ovechkin, Malkin and Zhamnov are all competent in their own zone. As for hitting…Ovechkin plants body checks harder than most guys on the Canadian roster on a consistent basis. Fans in this area are STILL talking about the hit he laid on Suchy in the season opener in Washington. He almost killed him.
Russia’s been a bit of a mess for awhile, but they have the ability to win on talent alone. I still don’t think they can beat Canada though.

Why in hell would the Kazakhs not pick Perezhogin from Montreal? Their only NHL skater is Antropov. Perezhogin is a decent quick rookie with skills. What are they thinking?

Although Lindros, Domi, Tucker and Belak all missed out on 2006 Mens Olympic Team, I still think they have a good shot at making Canada’s 2006 Special Olympic Team.

I don’t think so. They want to do the best they can, so they want their best guys just like everybody else. He must have become a Russian citizen and revoked his Kazakh citizenship or something like that.
In addition to the usual suspects, Slovakia looks quite strong this time around too. Lots of quality NHLers on the roster. I think the Czechs have as good a chance as anyone.
Perezhogin played for the Russian national team at U18 and WJC, he can’t play for KAZ anymore
