Who would I pick?

I have very different views on who could make team Canada 2006, no Mike Fisher or Chris Phillips…(Sorry, they’re good hockey players, just not good enough!) So who would I pick for the team?So guys who get consideration:

Goalies – Brodeur, Turco, Belfour, Luongo, Joseph, Thedore.

I wouldn’t pick Belfour because he can’t take those extra games, Brodeur is a given. Never been a fan of Marty Turco, and would rather see Luongo or Theodore make the team. Belfour will make it because of Quinn though, just like the World Cup. Joseph has fallen off since he joined the Wings, though he had a good playoffs, don’t expect it.

Leafy: Brodeur, Luongo, Theodore

Gretzky: Brodeur, Beflour, Luongo

Defense – Pronger, Blake, MacInnis, Foote, Brewer, McCabe, Souray, Aucoin, Jovanovski, Neidermayer, Desjardins, Bouwmeester, Hannan, Redden, Regehr, Boyle, Stevens.

I wouldn’t want Boyle on the team at all, not even consider him. Souray, and Aucoin won the hardest shot comp, which may help them, McCabe….lol…. MacInnis needs a good come back. Pronger, Blake, and Neidermayer are all a given I think. Desjardins is only any good when he’s full health, and that won’t happen any time soon. Stevens is too old, and has a similar scenario to Desjardins.

Leafy: Blake, Pronger, Neidermayer, Redden, Jovanovski, Foote, Aucoin.

Gretzky: Pronger, Blake, Neidermayer, Jovanovski, Brewer, Foote, Redden.

Forwards: Heatley, Savard, Thortnon, Murray, Briere, Iginla, O’neill, Sakic, Kariya, Tanguay, Daze, Fleury, Morrow, Arnott, Yzerman, Shanahan, Draper, Maltby, Smyth, Allison, Carter, Lindros, Messier, Peca, Doan, Primeau, Gagne, Lemieux, Recchi, Marleau, McCauly, Lecavalier, St Louis, Richards, Nieuwendyk, Roberts, Tucker, Nolan, Morrison, Bertuzzi, Crosby, Nash.

I included a couple guys people will disagree with, but I feel some guys deserve a good look. Roberts scored more goals in fewer games then Shane Doan last year, but Gary is old, hurt, and can’t take the extra games. Expect Lemieux to be captain again, alot of ussuals making it. Nieuwy and Nolan would need to get close to 15 goals in the 20-25 games before the team has to be announced for them to get much of any consideration, it was a bit of Leaf bias there. Tucker is a hell of a player, but he’s ussually ignored.

Leafy: Lemieux, Tanguay, Sakic, Iginla, Thornton, Bertuzzi, Lecavalier, Heatley, Nash, Primeau, Murray, Roberts, Smyth.

Gretzky: Lemieux, Yzerman, Sakic, Thornton, Heatley, St Louis, Richards, Doan, Draper, Smyth, Iginla, Lecavalier, Gagne, Nash.

As you can see, it will take a bit more to sell me on St Louis, he’d definatley be there if one of the guys I picked got hurt.

Replacements on probable injury

Leafy: St Louis replace Lemieux, Shanahan replace Roberts, Bouwmeester replace Pronger, Brewer replace Blake.

Gretzky: Marleau replace Lemieux, Primeau replace Yzerman, Bouwmeester replace Pronger, Brewer replace Blake, Theodore replace Belfour.

Personally, I think Gretzky is the only one who’s made ANY sense when talking about picking teams, some guys considered for the World Cup I rolled my eyes about, and Gretzky didn’t pick them. Gretz needs to stop looking over guys like Tanguay, he’ll be an international star some day….

I forgot Robitaille, and Damphouse on the forward consideration list. But hey, they have sliver of a chance anyways.

  2. NYRules says:

Kariya will be on the team.

They will disregard his year in colorado and he will make it.

I dont know how you wouldnt take him, hes got all the skills and the heart.

He carried the ducks through the playoffs with little offensive talent to help, got knocked out by stevens, next shift gets up and rips it right past Brodeur.

That one play characterizes heart and thats what you need to win.

  3. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to pick Kariya, he’s one of the best in the game, but see I built a power team, Tanguay there is the only guy who has never really shown he’s a strong player. But there I get Primeau, Bertuzzi, Lecavalier, Thornton, Roberts, Iginla, all power forwards. Never say Vinny ain’t a power forward cuz he is.

I can guarantee the goalies are Brodeur, Luongo, and Theodore. Theodore should have gone to the World Champs this year and likely would have been the best choice, as he was the only active one of the three, but he declined.

Hardest shot comp? Who cares. If Souray or Aucoin get picked, it won’t be based on their shot. Aucoin is a great defenseman because he can play 40 minutes a game. Souray is a threat offensively and is fairly solid defensively. You’re right, Macinnis won’t go. Mccabe won’t go, he was laughable this year playing in Europe. With any defensive core, it’s important to have diversity so that your defensemen can play in all situations. But again, they must be able to play defense so Boyle is out. My choice for defensemen is: Niedermayer, Blake, Pronger, Redden, Jovo, Foote, and Regehr, with Bouwmeester next on the list.

Sell you on St. Louis? What more does this guy have to do? Kariya won’t be there, St. Louis will. Don’t mean to sound cliche and mention the “big ice” but St. Louis is that firefly on the big ice Canada needs, just like Kariya did for them in Salt Lake City. St. Louis, ideally, would play with Lemieux to replace Kariya, as Lemieux had stated four years ago that he loves having a speedy linemate. My pick for forwards: Lemieux, Sakic, Thornton, Lecavalier, Draper, Iginla, Tanguay, Smyth, Gagne, St. Louis, Heatley, Nash, Doan

Bertuzzi is still not a given, his eligibility is still very much in the air. I would have to say Bertuzzi is next in line for wingers, but Brad Richards is definitely the top center not on that list. He will surely replace any injuries, or more than likely, Lemieux. Heatley is on the bubble. He played awful at the World Championships and that will do him no favors approaching the selection of the Olympic team.

Of course this is all strictly speculation. A lot can happen between now and then in what is now an inevitable upcoming NHL season.

    And seriously…Gary freakin Roberts?

  5. Raccer says:

And you forgot Spezza. When did this guy will have the respect he deserve ?

  6. LeafyMcLeaf says:

With a name like “hockeywhore” can we take you seriously.

    – Dany Heatley

    – Shane Doan

    – Ryan Smyth

Looking over Keith Primeau is inexuseable.

  9. TheCoach says:

On the big ice, I don’t think he’s a good fit.

  10. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Yo you need 13 forwards and 7 defense.

  11. LeafyMcLeaf says:

It’s funny, just before I read your comment I thought to myself “oh shit Spezza!”

  12. hockeywhore says:

When you name Gary Roberts to team Canada, can we take you seriously?

  13. kicksave856 says:

    hockeywhore’s got ya there.

  14. LeafyMcLeaf says:

I was trying to put together a physical team that can score 29 goals is more then Shane Doan, and Gary Roberts is very physical.

  15. raine_kalisz says:

Boyle impressed me at the world champs. I would consider him. Belfour won’t make the team, garunteed. I see luongo, brodeur and theodore for years to come. Roberts has no chance in hell, and despite being a leaf fan, I wouldn’t give him one. Lemieux, Sakic, Iginla, Thornton, Heatly, Smyth, Doan, Draper, Lecavalier, Nash, Richards and St Louis are just about locks to make the team, pick and choose what you want out of that group. Also I think Maltby has a good chance. I don’t see MacInnis playing NHL hockey ever again. Morrison has an outside chance, he played pretty well at the WCH and depending on how he plays in the regular season I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make the team.

Oh and Tanguay, I haven’t seen him play much so I can’t really pass judgement on him, was injured last year and that’s the reason he was omitted from the WCH team.

  16. nordiques100 says:

i have several excuses: Sakic, Thornton, Spezza, Marleau, Mario, Lecavalier

i say those 6 centres are a good enough reason to leave off primeau.

  17. nordiques100 says:

and in my haste I left off Brad Richards in error. so there is yet another reason for no primeau.

the only flyer making team canada will be gagne

Gary Roberts outscored the following Canadian world cup players (goals wise).

    Shane Doan*

    Brad Richards*

    Simon Gagne *

    Kris Draper

    Joe Thornton*

    Ryan Smyth*

    Mario Lemieux

*Roberts played in fewer games then these guys.

Hell this guy outscored Todd Bertuzzi by ten goals, and played in only three more games.

ONLY FOUR CANADIAN WORLD CUP PLAYERS OUTSCORED ROBERTS! SAKIC, IGINLA, ST LOUIS, AND LECAVALIER!! Roberts played fewer games then all these guys, and if he played every game, probably could have outscored Lecavalier. He’s a great leader, and very well positioned.

    Doan: 2003-04 Phx NHL 79 27 41 68

    Roberts: 2003-04 TML NHL 72 28 20 48

    39 years old, 6’2 200 pounds

Doan is a far better choice, shove the Leafs bias aside for once.

  21. GretzNYR99 says:

Roberts broke his neck 10 years ago. I don’t think I’m going into battle on an internation stage with a checking player who broke his neck 10 years ago.

    – Roberts only missed 10 games.

    – Roberts only outscored Doan by one goal, and Doan had less of a team around him. Doan had 19 more points.

    – Bertuzzi still had 60 points, Roberts only 48. Bertuzzi will rebound and be a top scorer again, like has been the last few years. Roberts’ salad days are over.

    – Wow, you put Kris Draper up there, I can’t believe this. Kris Draper was NEVER a big goal scorer, and never will be. He’s meant to be a CHECKING PLAYER, something that he does a hell of a lot better than Gary Roberts… check the Stanley Cup totals on that one for further proof.

    – Joe Thornton still had 50 assists and almost a point a game, in a season in which Sergei Samsonov was injured, and only played 58 games.

    – Brad Richards is a playmaker, don’t even try that one.

    – Simon Gagne played on Philly’s 2nd line all year… there’s not a whole lot you can do if you don’t get proper ice time.

    Seriously… give it up.

  22. hockeyhead says:

screw the olympics. put out some youth.

but if you were to put pros out there then put the team that won the world cup last fall.

chripes….gary roberts… why not put out francis and tie domi and darcy tucker.

cam neely could play better than roberts if he wanted to abuse his body more….heck….so could ray bourque.

if you are going to do this leafy bias rant then i gotta shout out some bruins names, by the way thornton is the best choice you have for that team i don’t care what your stat book says. and put nick boynton on the blue line too…..he is nasty.

  23. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Not a big Boynton fan, but another fifteen dollars, and I’ll have a Thornton jersey.

  24. hockeyhead says:

that is cool. i hope you are not paying 150 bones like i did at a bruins game. the next jersey i would like would be a marty lapointe but we gotta wait and see if he is still with the team. oh, and i would pick marty before gary too….HAHAHA.

sorry to add the extra flack…..your brave pick on gary roberts got a lot of sh#t.

thornton-nash-doan will be a killer line for team canada for many years to come (IMO)/
