You may have heard me say that the Canadiens shouldn't try to sign anyone, but the fact remains that we have a little less than $19m to spend, that we have important holes in our starting line-up, and that we are currently under the salary cap floor.

Now...if I'm Montreal's GM (and yes, I'm aware that I'm not Bob Gainey), here's what I'm focussing on today;

Sign Eric Bélanger...
Bélanger is a typical Carbonneau kinda guy. A two way forward who shows up every night. Solid defensively with a small offensive upside. The Canadiens need to add some local talent to please their fans and make them forget about the 2007 NHL Draft. Now of course, signing Bélanger isn't going to cut it for the fans who so desperately wanted to see Brière wearing the Habs jersey, but you gotta start somewhere.

Keep Mike Johnson...
He knows the system, and he knows Montreal. From all the UFAs out of Montreal, he's the only want I would want back (of course, I'm not talking about Andrei Markov who already signed a new deal). Johnson shows up to play everynight and, eventhough his numbers weren't that great, he did a pretty job overall.

Get Two Defensemen...
With Rivet now in San Jose and Souray about to sign...elsewhere, the Canadiens are in need of defensemen. I like Brad Stuart a lot, but a lot of teams are gonna go after him now that Rafalski, Schneider, Hannan and Poti are signed. Which should mean big bucks for the former 1st round pick. The same thing can be said about Danny Markov.

So right now, I would shift my focus on three defensemen, and try to sign two of them to short-to-mid term contracts; Tom Preissing, Ossi Vaananen and/or Stephane Robidas. Focus on these players right now, while most of the teams are gonna traget the Souray, Stuart, Markov and Hamrlik.

You can take Scuderi out of that list. Apparently he was re-signed by the Penguins at the same time or shortly after Whitney was signed, but it was not announced.
It is on their website, however: HERE
