Worst trades ever

This article is about the worst trades ever. And I suppose waiver transactions can be included as well. Major screw ups by GM’s, that they really wish they hadn’t done now. What do you people think are the worst trades ever? Here’s my list (Not in any order).

Note. trades in the 70’s and 80’s are before my time, so this only 90’s and the present. But feel free to post them.

New York Islanders traded Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan McCabe and 3rd round selection (Jarkko Ruutu) in 1998 to the Vancouver Canucks for Trevor Linden.

Pittsburgh Penguins traded Markus Naslund to the Vancouver Canucks for Alek Stojanov.

Philadelphia Flyers traded Ron Hextall, Peter Forsberg, Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Chris Simon, 1st round selection (Jocelyn Thibault) in 1993, 1st round selection (later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, later traded to the Washington Capitals – Nolan Baumgartner) in 1994 and cash to the Quebec Nordiques for Eric Lindros.

Montreal Canadiens traded Vincent Damphousse to the San Jose Sharks for 5th round selection (previously acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes – Marc-Andre Thinel) in 1999, 2nd round selection in 2000 and future considerations.

Montreal Canadiens traded Pierre Turgeon, Rory Fitzpatrick and Craig Conroy to the St. Louis Blues for Murray Baron, Shayne Corson and a 5th round selection(Gennady Razin).

Los Angeles Kings traded Darryl Sydor and 5th round selection (Ryan Christie) in 1996 to the Dallas Stars for Shane Churla and Doug Zmolek.

Chicago Blackhawks traded Chris Chelios to the Detroit Red Wings for Anders Eriksson and 1st round selection (Steve McCarthy) in 1999 and 1st round selection in 2001.

Toronto Maple Leafs traded Fredrik Modin to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Cory Cross and 7th round selection in 2001.

Tampa Bay Lightining traded Adrian Aucoin and Alex Karitonov to the New York Islanders for Mathieu Biron and a second round selection in the 2001 entry draft.

Montreal Canadiens traded Mark Recchi to the Philadelphia Flyers Dainius Zubrus and the option of either taking the Flyers’ 2nd round selection in the 1999 or 2000 draft or the New York Islanders’ 2nd round selection in the 2000 draft

Toronto Maple Leafs traded Jason Smith to the Edmonton Oilers for 4th round selection (Jonathon Zion) in 1999 and 2nd round selection in 2000.

New York Islanders traded Tommy Salo to the EdmontonOilers for Mats Lindgren and 8th round selection (Radek Martinek) in 1999.

Honorable mentions to Jaromir Jagr and Pavel Bure trades. But I can understand that they were bad because of the high salaries. However the prospects might develop yet so we don’t really know.

Toronto Maple Leafs placed Steve Sullian on waivers (later to be claimed by Chicago)

Edmonton Oilers placed Ray Whitney on waivers (later to be claimed by Florida)

Ney York Islanders placed Martin Straka on waiver (claimed by Florida)

Boston Bruins placed Robert Lang on waivers (claimed by Pittsbourgh, who had just lost him in waiver draft)

What do you people think? Any more to add?

That pick was used to select Marcel Hossa, after they had used their own pick to select Ron Hainsey.

This article has already been posted last year and I still think the worst trade ever got to be

    To Edmonton: Doug Weight

    To NYRangers: Esa Tikkanen.

  3. mikster says:

True, but Tikkanen was a big part of the Cup though, i dislike commenting on trades that a team made but it won the Cup.

  4. puckedinthehead says:

Not really a trade but one of the best deals Pat “The fax machine was broken” Quinn ever completed while in Vancouver was when Petr Nedved was signed to play in St. Louis and a mediated compensation for the Canucks, Craig Janney refused to report to Vancouver. So Quinn traded his ass back to the Blues for Brett Hedican, Jeff Brown and Nathan La Fayette. All those players played an integreal role in getting Vancouver to the finals which of course they lost to the Smurfs from N.Y.

  5. Nemix says:

Perhaps you dont remember tik’s play that year or the few years before. At the time, he was integral to his team and could still score. Doug Weight you had to wait 4 years to truly develop into the character he is now. At the time.. the trade was truly in NYR’s favor and they won the cup , so to speak

I think the Eric Lindros trade is the worst of all time, but a another pretty bad one is when Montreal traded Claude Lemieux to the New Jersey Devils for Sylvain Turgeon. The 2nd Gretsky trade is quite pathetic too; Gretzky for Craig Johson, Roman Vopat, Patrice Tardif, 5th round choice(Peter Hogan) and 1st round choice(Matt Zultek). Granted, Gretzky only played 18 games with the Blues, but in those 18 games he did score 21 points.

    – What about Mike Keenan when he was coaching the Canucks putting Scott Walker in the waiver draft

    – Canucks trade Bill Muckalt, Dave Scatchard and Kevin Weekes to NYI for Felix Potvin

    – St. Louis trades Geoff Courtnall, Robert Dirk, Sergio Momesso and Cliff Ronning to Canucks for Dan Quinn and Garth Butcher

    – Vancouver trades Cam Neely and Glen Wesley for Barry Pederson

    – Vancouver trades Mike Peca, Mike Wilson and 1st rounder (Jay McKee) to Buffalo for Alex Mogilny

    – Canucks sign Messier

    – Montreal trades Patrick Roy and Mike Keane to Colorado for Jocelyn Thibault, Martin Rucinsky and Andrei Kovalenko

    – Hartford trades Ron Francis and Ulf Samuelsson to Pittsburgh for John Cullen and Zarley Zalapski

    – St.Louis trades CUJO and the rights to Mike Grier to Edmonton for St.Louis 1st round choices in 1996 and 1997 (Marty Reasoner and Matt Zultek)

    – Ottawa trades Pavol Demitra to St.Louis for Christer Olsson

  8. mikster says:

I don’t think they were Smurfs in 94. They were Smurs when Ftorek was a Ranger. I think Herb Brookes was the coach.

  9. mikster says:

And next season the Blues fans boo’d at Gretz, that was a complete joke. I had no respect for Blues fans after that happened for a while.

  10. leafwatcher says:

Yeah, that’s the reason I didn’t put Amonte trade from NYR back in 94-95.

  11. benji_ch says:

Here are a couple of disgustingly terrible deals:

    – To Ottawa: Christer Olson

    To St.Louis: Pavol Demitra

    – Martin Straka claimed off waivers by Florida from NYI

The Lindros trade is the worst of all time by far. Maybe switch Lindros and Forsberg in the deal then it would be fair. well maybe not…but id still pick Forsberg over Lindros.

  12. benji_ch says:

sorry for takin your Demitra deal down there bro

  13. Sands says:

Turgon and Palffy were traded as well, Could you imagin the team they could of had? Straka, Turgon, Palffy, Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan McCabe, and Tommy Salo.

Thats why the Islanders are not going to win the cup any time in the next 10 years. They have cursed themselves.

  14. Glen says:

Can we move on from this topic?? It’s about as beaten up as everyones’ predictions.

  15. JClark87 says:

Adam Oates for Bernie Federko. What the hell were the Wings thinking? We could have Oates, Yzerman, Fedorov, Larionov, and Datsyuk and Draper as our centermen. That’s just crazy. That was with St. Louis I believe. That seems like a Lions trade, a young future star for a player on the downside of his career. That one was the worst.

  16. saiklo says:

Lets not forget when the Rangers dealt Kovalev to the Pens for the pathetic Petr Nedved and some other waste players.

  17. FerenceFan1 says:

This trade was pretty bad too

    To Pittsburgh: Matthew Barnaby

    To Buffalo: Stu Barnes

    To Pittsburgh: 3rd round DP

    To Atlanta: Jiri Slegr

    To Columbus: 3rd round DP(ATL)

    To Pittsburgh: Krystov Oliwa

  18. NYIchooch75 says:

    Here’s 2 for the Islanders:

Palffy for Ollie Jokinen, Mathieu Biron & Josh Green. Granted, it was made for payroll reasons, but c’mon…Ollie Jokinen?!

Turgeon & Malakhov for Kirk Muller, Craig Darby & Matthieu Schneider

Thank Don Maloney, you ***** absolute horror of a G.M. I hope a puck hits you in you’re stupid, ugly, useless face, you piece of shit! Oh, by the way, THANKS FOR DRAFTING BRETT LINDROS!!!! What an impact player he was!

  19. RangerSteve says:

    Worst Trade EVER…

Rangers trade Igor Ulanov, Filip Novak, and a First Round Pick to Flordai for Pavel Bure

I mean, I’m a Rangers fan and all, but i couldn’t believe thats all it took to get the Russian Rocket. Too bad Dvorak got hurt a few games earlier cuz we coudl still have Yorkie…DAMN YOU SATHER!

  20. Aetherial says:

When Calgary traded Doug Gilmour to Toronto as part of a huge deal… the Leafs robbed Calgary blind on that deal.

  21. TheDevil says:

You are all wrong about the Lindros deal. It was the steal of the century, the best trade ever.

    Go ask any Avs fan.

  22. cecilturtle says:

Mark Messier from Edmonton to the NY Rangers for Bernie Nicholes, Rice, & Baumgardner.
