His ability to make absolutely devastating hits was overshadowed by his inability to stay in position. In Edmonton he continually found himself out of position due to his penchant for hitting. I don’t think Semenov suffers from quite the same problem, but on a team that has not played it’s size, like Edmonton, sometimes the coaches and fans push for more physical play by the big men. If Lexi can play large, without compromising his game – he will be an effective first pairing type D. If he falls into the hitting trap…well, I’d rather not watch another Oiler develop into a ‘grinder’ type sixth or seventh D-man and spend years ridding themselves of that stigma (see Greg DeVries).

I’m a little surprised they are so thin on forwards. Yes, they’ve focused on picking up d-men a little bit, but haven’t been overly focused on the backline. What happened here? Brendl doesn’t even really count because he came in a trade. Where are the forwards?

Patrick Sharp was about it, and he’s a call-up fill-in player at best.

Clarke did the right thing in drafting Carter and Richards. I wasn’t trying to be funny, just pointing out that things were going the right way.

I agree that the wings are thin, so I expect the team to address that at next year’s draft, and it’s also possibly the impetus behind getting Chouinard off the scrap heap.

As for Niitymaki, he had it rough this past season. Lots of adjustments are still needed from him. I’d say he’s still two years away from joining the NHL, but even then it would be as a backup unless there is marked improvement this year. Surprisingly enough, his first-year AHL stats were very similar to Ouellet’s, and Ouellet played on a better Phantoms team.

He was solid all season as a rookie, and on a team that played well below expectations. With a new coaching staff in place in St. John’s next season, we’ll see if he can continue to develop into an NHL-calibre defenceman.

The guy is big, and scored a lot in junior, but he’s done very little as a pro. The Habs are his third organization, and Florida let him go. I’m no fan of Mike Keenan, but if Keenan doesn’t like you, then there’s something there, or not. I certainly hope that he can break out with Montreal, but based on his past performance, I wouldn’t rank him ahead of Michael Ryder, Duncan Milroy, Tomas Plekanec or Alexei Perezhogin.
