Zherdev to Vancouver???

Although not supported by any direct sources there is a great deal of speculation that the Vancouver Canucks are very interested in the Blue Jackets Nikolai Zherdev. It is well known that the Canucks are in need of extra scoring and Zherdev could provide to be a good fit with Morrison and Naslund provided that he cleans up his attitude and comes prepared to play.

The player that is most often talked about as trade bait in Vancouver is Mattais Ohlund. Ohlund is a very steady defenseman who works very hard and provides a great deal of leadership. While Zherdev is a great talent HTR does not believe that the Canucks would be interested in trading a top notch defenseman who does not ever complain for a sometimes interested but often whiny forward.

I have to admit. Zherdev would be a good player to add. But would he be able to create the chemistry that the Bertuzzi-Morrison-Naslund line, had in the day. I dont beleive so. But adding him with the sedins might be a good thing. I would definetly not trade away Ohlund for Zherdev. How would be left on defense, unless Vancouver tries to sign a big name in the free agent pool.

We'll see. I can't wait till the Draft and July 1st.

  2. BruMagnus says:

I've been hearing for about a week now that both the Vancouver Canucks and the Pittsburgh Penguins are highly interested in making a trade for Zherdev and have sent some offers Columbus's way.

  3. BruMagnus says:

HTR should also not believe that a line of Morrison, Naslund and Zherdev would be in any way successful.

  4. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Zherdev is so over rated. Somebody suggested the Leafs would win a deal White and a second for Zherdev, and I laughed my ass off. The guy has one good season, 50 goals in 200 games. He's got second line potential at very best.

  5. canuck8 says:

the canucks are a hark working team. and i don't think they should trade a top d-man for a lazy ass and whiny second line player. if the canucks trade ohlund, trade him for a top line gritty player. don't even think about trading ohlund on zherdev its just stupid.

  6. mmonex says:

personaly, i'd like to see zherdev with the sedin's twin…it could be one of the most dangerous line next season if zherdev wake up finally

  7. DJTOKid says:

Dave Nonis is NOT going to give up one of the leagues best defensive defensemen for a guy who is Yashin like in his desire to play. Zherdev isn't worth much after last years performance. You'd be trading two hearts for none and that isn't a very good trade.

  8. BruMagnus says:

I guess that's why he was drafted 4th overall.

  9. prayin-for-the-wce says:

AND im sure that Ohlund would be willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to a cup-contending team like Columbus.

  10. LeafyMcLeaf says:

See, he wasn't even drafted as high as Alex Daigle!

  11. fernz says:

    Here's a trade:

To Toronto: Zherdev, Zlesla, and a 5th

To Colombus: Kubina, Ondrus, Wozniewski, and a 3rd

  12. tancred says:

As someone already mentioned above, Ohlund has a no-trade-clause in his contract.  He could waive it, of course.  But for the moment, his NTC makes this suggestion moot.

As to the Canucks' scoring problems, what happened to Jason King?  I thought he showed a lot of potentional a couple years ago or so.  But I don't think he was called up hardly at all from the farm team last season.  What happened with him?
  13. wheresthesoda says:

pavel brednl was drafter 5th overall and Lundmark was drafted 9th.

  14. SabresFan220 says:

Brilliant idea if your GM is a moron, and sadly for Leafs fans the only moron GM not fired in the NHL is JFJ. Columbus dumped their old GM. Why the hell would they give up their #1 (and relatively cheap) defenseman Klesla and Zherdev for the $6 million contract of Kubina, a 3rd liner even in Columbus in Ondrus, and a 5th defenseman? Sorry, the days of raiding bad teams of their few good talents in exchange for garbage are pretty much over. Trades that lopsided should be few and far between these days.

  15. mikster says:

Well, it won’t be a straight up deal since i wouldn’t even trade Zherdev for Ohlund alone or with a 2nd rounder either. Zherdev had a solid rookie campaign, the B’Jacks tried to screw him with the contract, he had failing coaches, poor supporting squad, and Hitchcok was too much of a hard ass on him with his defensive mistakes, yet no one really says a thing to Rick Nash.

He is still young, can still turn it around, very well rounded in offensive skills. He’s absolutely worth to get IF the B’Jacks are actually shopping him.

I say the Edmonton Oilers get him though.

Another great trade involving the leafs… way to go…

  17. prayin-for-the-wce says:

Jason king just stopped producing. He lost his legs. then he got injured. then noone cared about him.  As for ohlund,  Sure theres the possibility that ohlund could waive his ntc.  But i doubt he would waive it to go to a team thats never been to the playoffs in their existence.

  18. Falvai says:

Zherdev will not become a Vancouver Canuck.  He is a very skilled forward with elite potential but does anyone think the frustrations he had with defensive minded Ken Hitch***** will go away on the equally defensive blue collar Canucks?  The Canucks  desparately need offense, but he is much better suited in Pittsburgh where they've shown no fear in bringing in potentially under achieving scorers in the past.  Kovalev, Morozov, Kraft and Straka and to a lesser extent Randy Robataille are all prime examples of this.

  19. tancred says:

Thanks for the info, Prayin-for-the-wce.  That's a shame about King, though.  Hopefully he can turn things around.

Just realized I totally botched spelling "potential."  Ooff!  That's what I get for typing and eating lunch at the same time.
  20. BruMagnus says:

of course it is easy to find the exception to the rule, but usually the top 5 draft picks turn out to be, at worst top 6 forwards and top 4 defenders and backup goaltenders.

  21. BruMagnus says:

If I was Toronto's GM, I would accept this trade in a heartbeat.
If I was CBJ's GM, I would have a heartattack.

  22. BruMagnus says:

For once I agree with Mikster.
Zherdev is still young and not damaged goods… yet

  23. BruMagnus says:

    I totally agree with you!
A few days ago I made the comment on the Zherdev thread (that I started) that the Penguins should target him heavily, as if he couldn't become succesful playing alongside countrymate Malkin, and failing that, with Art Ross winner Crosby, then he really can't play with anyone.

Furthermore, as you have just mentioned, the Pens have a great record of bringing in under achieving players and developing them into solid scorers. Kovalev, Straka and Lang are probably the top 3 examples that come to mind. Even someone like Stu Barnes developed nicely in Pitty.

  24. wayne2 says:

I honestly think this is the next Yashin.

  25. JuicemaN says:

And this is why Leaf fans get dumped on.

Bru – feel free to attack…

  26. BruMagnus says:

    I already did, mildly, above.

  27. oldtimehockey says:

    how about

     Naslund Gomez Zherdev ?

  28. Z13 says:

Now that we have a new GM in place we will see the wheels be put into motion. Zherdev is an extremely talented winger, as anyone who has spent any time watching this young man play can attest to. The biggest problem in his play is his defensive style (or lack of). Hitch demands a physical style of play that Nikki is just not willing to conform to. Anyone watching the Cup playoffs can see that this style of play is what will win us a playoff race. The biggest problem in his personal life is that his love interests carry over into his game and have essentially created a "team cancer". Maturity, which involves time, is the only answer. I'm not sure an organization who has struggled through six losing seasons is going to be willing to sit back and wait for puberty to run its course.

  29. smokz13 says:

bringing in this guy would be a waste of resourses for this team. if the nucks do anything this year it should be to strengthen the back end. that would be money well spent. after the next season when nassy, mo and cooke are are up for ufa, the nucks should spend the money on forwards then when they have more resorses to go after the right mix of guys to make this team work. if the nucks can get a Kimmo Timonen type player to play on the powerplay that would help this team. they were dreadfull with the man advantage and having someone to work with salo would be a big up for this team.

  30. LEAFSROCK07 says:

HAHA they can have Zherdev! HES a cancer. Toronto's going to sign Smyth or Dury. We will have heart. and Vancouver will have Zherdev. ha. just wait for next year. the rise of toronto is imminent. our young prospects are going to hit their prime shortly. steen and wellwood are the next 50 goal scorers loooook out
