Bondra to T.O ???

I was listening in on after the horn on leafs t.v after the the habs beat the leafs, and Gary Green kept on saying wouldn’t Peter Bondra be a nice fit on Mats Sundin’s wing.

I was thinking to myself wow that would be a really bad move he’s too old ,but then i thought about how in like the last 8 season’s he has never scored less then 20 goals . Now i kinda think that he would be an awesome winger for mats , but who knows . They could sign him and he could be a total flop.
But Mr.Green also pointed out that he would be way cheaper now then he was in the fall . Exspecially went saying you are going to be on Mats Sundins line

What do ya think ??????

The leafs have 1 roster spot available, and it is soon to be occuupied by Colaiacovo (who is almost finished his conditioning stint with the Marlies). The Leafs would have to send a player down to the Marlies and risk losing him, or trade someone just to fit Bondra on the roster. plus he leafs have 600K in cap room, if a player with 500K was traded or waived, he could be signed at a maximum of 1.1 million dollars.

Hell I'd love to see it! Bondra would be a great fit and would finally give Mats a sniper to play with!

I am not at all averse to signing an aging vet for a one year contract.

This is a necessary step to rebuilding. You can't just sell off all your veterans and bring up 12 rookies a year… they won't learn anything or develop properly.

In a cap world, I am not against signing most players who may be able to offer something… as long as it just for one year.

Yeah if its a 1 year deal, Bondra could bring some scoring touch to team of hard working forwards that lack that for the most part don't have that finish.

Bondra plays on the right wing right?

so it would be Poni-Sundin-Bondra, or Tucker-Sundin-Bondra, etc.

In any case, as it was mentioned above, Coliacovo is coming back. I think Bell might be sent down to the minors (does he have to pass through waivers?). I would obviously send Belak down because

    a) that is where he belongs
    b) it keeps Bell with the Leafs
    c) it clears the space necessary to sign Bondra for the remainder of the year

  6. mojo19 says:

Yes Belak should be sent down, but its not going to happen, in fact Howard Berger said that he will be playing tonight, not sure if its up front or on Defense, but with Carlo playing, I figure Belak will be a forward.
here's how it looks for tonight vs. Atlanta. And I hope we see Peca vs. Hossa during 5 on 5, just to shadow him and keep him off the board.

    Poni – Sundin – Wellwood
    Tucker – Stajan – Kilger
    Antropov – Peca – Steen
    Battaglia – O'Neil – Belak

    Kaberle – Kubina
    Carlo – McCabe
    Gill – White

    scratch – Bell, Pohl.

  7. 92-93 says:

actually Maurice has already stated that Carlo isnt playing tonight. Bell is. But yeah, Belak is well liked by JFJ and Maurice and its something that we all have to accept.

Only problem with a guy like Peter Bondra, is that Toronto has enough players who only show up from time to time, which is one of Bondra's better known attributes. When he wants to play, even at his age now, he is among the elite goalscorers in the National Hockey League, but, if I'm JFJ, I'm looking right past Bondra, (unless he's willing to sign for "uber-cheap"), and picking up another veteran who we already know will cost LESS than half a million for the rest of the season, and is a proven force in front of the net. He may not have the scoring touch that he once did, but put John Leclair in the Blue and White of the Maple Leaf uniform, and I think you will see him show up and compete every night, and will find some memory of his goalscoring youth, especially put on a line with Peca and O'Neill. Mats will be fine with Nik and Poni, let's finaly leave that line together for the better part of the season, and judge then after they've had a few months of playing together regularly…
