Boyle, Granberg and Franson alongside Rielly, Gardiner, Phaneuf/Gleason/Gunnersson?

Three RHD gives good balance, limit Franson’s minutes. Could bring stability on the back end.

Beats giving Orpik a 20 million four year deal just to see him become another Komisarek, Finger, Beachemin disaster contract IMO.

I’m with you on Orpik, he’s taken a step back. I would like to sign him, but at $2.5 mil hit or something.

As for Franson, I really doubt he comes back. He’s been a contract holdout into camp two straight seasons and has settled for really cheap one year deals. I would be really surprised to see him back.

I think Franson should be moved. Give Gardiner 1st pp time next year.
        Watch someone else overpay Orpik.

If we move Phaneuf Franson could be useful on the PP. Padding his stats can make him a tradeable asset. Next year looks like a write off, no rush to dispose of assets.

I’d have no problem bringing Franson back, but I don’t think it’s going to be a pretty negotiation. This guy has settled for what every little bit million and change cap space we’ve had left two years in a row. He’s going to want a legitimate contract this offseason and this is the first year of 3 consecutive RFA years where he has arbitration rights. I would deal him at the draft for a 2nd or 3rd and try my luck in free agency.

I know he’s youngish and big with that right handed clapper, but I’d just as soon sign a veteran like Tom Gilbert to a cheap 1 year deal and save the cap space. I figure Franson will be looking at the $3-4 million range, and given his production last year and with the cap going up, he’ll get that in arbitration if it goes there.

I’m good with bringing in Boyle for Leadership and depth but id want to try and bring in Matt Niskanen first hopefully at 3 yrs $10.5 M, I’m sure it will take more than that though. Then move out others for assets and pics or depth up front.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

The capped contract length the last CBA produced is going to produce unseen terrible contracts for most UFAs. Niskanen gets 6 per easily over 7 years, 8 if Pittsburgh keeps him.

Clarkson’s deal is a sign of things to come.

I think best fit out of everything is :

    To Nashville
    Dion Phanuef
    Nazim Kadri
    Peter Holland
    2014 1st Rd

    To Toronto
    Shea Weber

Apparently the Leafs have spoken to Rutherford about James Neal.

Obviously we need to be looking down the middle and on the blueline but if we could land a star winger like Neal, I guess I would have no problem with that.

    • kessel_leafs81 says:

i would love james neal on the team. if we could keep lupul also then having kessel, jvr, lupul, neal would set up our wings for a long time. Im not sure what pitts would want back however because they have deep prospects in the defense position and deep center-wise. Maybe prospects like biggs and brown?

After signing Clarkson, I have realized:

I hate going the free agency routes, theirs a reason why teams allow them to be free agents…They are good, but expendable and can be easily replaced.

People sign them to big contracts, and then get burned afterwards.

The only free agents to look at are the ones that want to play for certain teams…Like Suter and Parise.

Also, has anyone heard that Spezza wants to play for the Leafs at UFA? I doubt Toronto would trade for him if that is true.
