The Montreal Canadiens named Michel Therrien as the team’s next head coach on Tuesday.

The announcement can be seen live on TSN.ca at 2:30pm et/11:30am pt while you can listen to all-day coverage on TSN Radio 990 in Montreal and TSN.ca/Montreal.

Therrien replaces interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth, who was removed from the position by general manager Marc Bergevin on May 2.

The 48-year-old Therrien returns to the Canadiens’ bench for the first time since he replaced Alain Vigneault as head coach during the 2000-01 season. He worked two-and-a-half seasons at the helm before being replaced by Claude Julien in 2002-03.

Therrien then worked in the AHL where he coached the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins before being named the Pittsburgh Penguins’ head coach midway through the 2005-06 season. He worked four seasons in Pittsburgh, leading the team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08.

I was hoping for marc Crawford but therrien is hardly a bad choice… We will see what he has to offer now with much more experience…

I kind of hoped it would be Crawford and not for bad reasons. I actually think Crawford was the better choice for Montreal but I’ll see how Therrien does. He is by no means a slouch.

I think they should have choosen neither, in my mind the logical choice was Robinson, no matter what anyone says.

    • TJ1975 says:

therrien might have more experience but the habs are a worse team this time around

      • lafleur10 says:

actually the hbs aren’t worse this time they are a better team than he had in 2000 but we we had a lot of injuries and that didn’t help our cause for the miserable season we had, plus he has price and subban on this team and he didn’t have that before, the only player left from when he was there before is markov

  2. mojo19 says:

True, we wouldn’t want Robinson to have another mid season breakdown.

I LIKED THE OLD FORMAT AND OLD SITE BETTER THIS 1 WILL TAKE SOME TIME TO GET USED TO!

      ALSO, I LOVE CAPS!!!!!!

heh, this whole lack of registration wall is fun…. though it does take some of the fun out of trolling… far too easy.

  4. TJ1975 says:

Yes…i’d feel real welcomed if i was Therrien….being the habs 3rd choice n all

  5. Brode says:

I think Montreal should have hired Crawford for many reasons but mainly because he knows what it takes to make it to the finals and the first go around with Therrien didnt go very well so i dont understand why they would want to try it again didnt they learn from Paul Maurice in Carolina, what has he done since coming back?

  6. TimTheBone says:

Therrien actually finds himself coming into a similar situation as when he did in Pittsburgh….

Young skilled team, who haven’t yet been able to come together… Missed the playoffs… Good core of young defenseman and prospects….. Strong looking forward core with some veteran leadership….great goalie…

Verrrrrry similar…. Except.. you know… Minus the whole best player in the world and all…. No big deal though!!

    Hahahaha….
