FLAMES, HAWKS COULD ACTIVELY PURSUE KOVALCHUK

There is no question in my mind that the Atlanta Thrashers are going to trade Ilya Kovalchuk and I believe that the sweepstakes for the star sniper is unofficially on.

That being said, Thrashers’ general manager Don Waddell is not in a position that he can go out and make a deal for future considerations such as the Toronto Maple Leafs pick that belongs to the Boston Bruins.

He will not be able to go back and sell that idea to his market right now. He won’t be able to sell the idea of a bunch of kids from the Los Angeles Kings like Thomas Hickey and Colten Teubert as the return that he gets on Kovalchuk. If he is going to make a move, it is going to have to be for bigger name players.

The Calgary Flames are a team that may, and I stress MAY, be interested. However if they are, they’re going to have to talk about some of the ‘big boys’ – like Dion Phaneuf amongst others – to be included.

If it’s not Phaneuf then there is a good chance that the Chicago Blackhawks will be interested. I’m not saying that talks have been made, but I am saying that guys like Patrick Sharp or Cam Barker or David Bolland will be in the mix. Legitimate, bonafide NHL players are what Waddell is looking for in return and he is looking for a couple of them

I think that at the end of the day, both Chicago and Calgary will be in that group to pursue Kovalchuk and pursue him hard.

Kovalchuk will choose the team with the best food. I happen to know for a fact that when teams go after free agents, food is always considered in the discussion. GMs know this, so they always showcase food in the team's promotional DVD. Take it from me, I know. It's all psychology.

Kovalchuk for Andreas Lilja and Brad May… they will bring toughness to Atlante

I would be more excited about trying to acquire Kovalchuk if I knew Brent Sutter wouldn't attempt to turn him into a penalty killer.

….. Capitals "MAY" trade Ovechkin for Crosby, but we'll never know
……. Phoenix "MAY" survive, in the desert, but we'll never know
…….. NYI "MAY" make the playoffs, but we'll never know

…….Toronto "MAY" make the playoffs……………………. oh, wait

I've got a new trade idea to get Kovalchuk.

Kadri, Poni, Hanson, Gunnarson and a 3rd for Kovalchuk. Then Sign Kovalchuk to long term deal. Good nice gift basket of players.  Get it done now.

Leaves the tank pretty empty, wouldn't you say?  Although our roster wouldn't be too bad next year:

Ilya Kovalchuk – Mikhail Grabovski – Phil Kessel
Niklas Hagman – Tyler Bozak – Nikolai Kulemin
    Viktor Stalberg – _____________ – _____________
    ______________ – Wayne Primeau – Colton Orr

    Tomas Kaberle – Luke Schenn
    Francois Beauchemin – Ian White
    Mike Komisarek – ______________

    Gustavsson – ________________

    CAP HIT – 49.5 million

Hmm, no, I'd still rather just wait and try to sign him on July 1st.

Atlanta wants a name brand player in return. They still need to sell tickets. None of the players you mentioned are going to fill that need. That's why Calgary and Chicago are listed as possibilities. They have higher profile players they can send the other way.

  8. Tachmo says:

That is a horrible package for ATL.
Wadell isn't that bright so maybe he would take that.
