Florida Panthers fire sale seems likely

less than a month since Vincent Viola and Douglas Cifu took over the franchise — sources say the Panthers are prepared to move any of their veteran players.

Forwards Tomas Fleischmann, Kris Versteeg, Scottie Upshall, Shawn Matthias, Brad Boyes and Marcel Goc are among those available along with Tom Gilbert and Dmitry Kulikov, just to name a few.

After making the playoffs two years ago, the Panthers haven’t gotten off to the kind of start anybody expected, especially after signing veteran goalie Tim Thomas.

While Viola and Cifu are willing to commit cash to the organization, the belief is they don’t want to throw good money after bad. The only thing GM Dale Tallon doesn’t want to do is trade any of the club’s good young prospects.

That means young players Jonathan Huberdeau, Jacob Markstrom, Erik Gudbranson and Aleksander Barkov won’t be going anywhere.

Maybe the 4 mentioned won’t, but what about players like Petrovic?
Gilbert has played very well so far this year as well. If the Leafs were to offer Gardiner and want young talent back…I wonder if something like Gardiner for Gilbert and Petrovic could be possible. Gilbert an RHD, may be a good fit with Dion, allowing Dion to play his natural side and keep his game simple as Gilbert can move the puck. Petrovic could develop into that stay at home RHD that plays physical that we need.
Florida gets an elite skating, young puck mover to play with a guy like Gudbranson.
I think it could be something both teams would be looking for.

If Nonis was going to trade Gardiner to Fla, and a dman was coming back, I am thinking the name on his list is Kulikov. That is just me, however i think he is the type of dman we need. More proven then Petrovic and I am not sold on Gilbert.

Tom Gilbert was awesome…5 years ago. He could plug into our line up as a 6-7 for sure. Who knows, maybe going to a better team than he’s been on the last few years could rejuvenate him and he could be a 2nd pairing guy again, but even in his prime that’s all he was.

I would definitely like to see us pick up Gilbert. Probably could get him at the deadline for a 4th-5th rounder.

I should have said this idea was meant more as a deadline thing if the Leafs are still “not shopping” Gardiner at that time. By no means is Gilbert what he was. But, he is only 30 and gives us depth on the right side and is having a solid season on a poor team. If he keeps it up, he could help.
Petrovic would be for next season possibly as he has a chance to grow into his body a bit more and play our system for part of a season in the minors first.
BTW, I have really liked Gunnar’s game the last 4-5 games Mojo. Didn’t like the first 3-4, but the last 4-5 have been really good on the overall and looks like his speed has even improved.

I thought of Kulikov, doorman. He is another underdeveloping guy that plays the left side and not a strong defensive D. I was going on the assumption that if the Leafs move Gardiner for another D, it will be lind of the opposite of Gardiner. Kulikov still has promise though for sure.

    Yakupov RNH Hemsky
    Perron Arcobello Jones
    Eager Gordon Pitlick
    Gazdic Acton ???

Lol. Gotta feel bad for Oiler’s fans. Their team is bad enough, now they lose Hall, Eberle and Smyth (who is awful, but still sort of scoring this year).

That line up is actually pathetic. Not sure why they dumped brown. Not that he’s any good, but with these injures at least he slots in.

    • doorman says:

I am baffled at dropping Brown for one simple reason, name a player who actually plays harder? Maybe Eakins didn’t like something about him? But it would seem odd for him to not like a gamer who is willing to take a beating for his teammates.

Just wondering why Gagner isn’t in your lineup or injured list?

      • mapleleafsfan says:

Yea I agree. And Yea, Gagner is still injured, but Hall, Eberle and Smyth are the new injuries.

        • realistic_leafs_fan says:

I don’t really understand the Brown trade either. They need some hard working veterans to play with their soft line-up of young talent…Are they just trying to clear cap space for something else?

          • mapleleafsfan says:

Could be clearing a Roster spot. I think they were at the limit. Maybe they’re looking for a FA goalie? Or just a depth signing.

            • doorman says:

Could be a trade to clear salary, but the Oilers have a bunch of cap space as far as I remember. Besides really what’s Brown make? Outside of a sh!tload more then probably any of us, lol.
