Interesting… this guy put up great numbers in the AHL last season out of nowhere, and doesn’t seem to have been given a solid chance in the N as of yet. Anyone know more about this kid???

Here are his most recent stats:

    2005-06 Minnesota NHL 10 0 1 1 -1 2 16 0.00

Good pick up, but what about Coliacovo, Wellwood!? etc..

  6. Torleafy says:

Wellwood is getting traded to Florida for a bucket of pucks; but Fla also going to eat 1.5 million of Roberts’ salary and toss him in the cab with the pucks to Toronto. Anybody want to buy a Wellwood jersey??? Hurry, it’s gonna go quick!

  7. Redford says:

Sounds like a good pickup! Does anyone know if Brad Isbister is still out there? He would be a decent winger. What do you think?

  8. Minky says:

    From TSN.ca player page

Strengths: Has a strong lower body and isn’t afraid to use it in the corners. Plays an aggressive style but is also defensive responsible.

Weaknesses: Lacks top-end talent and will have to find a niche as a defensive forward in order to make it at the NHL level.

    Career Potential: Fourth line center.

Sounds like hte king of gritty defesnive forward we need. I hope we can still get Peca, so we get the defensive two-way forward and some scoring too.

  9. leaf_20 says:

im guessing this is jfj’s lesser talented cheaper version of mike peca

  10. Redford says:

Does anyone know if Brad Isbister is still out there? He would be a decent winger. What do you think? They better lock up Lindros, pass on Allison!

  11. Aetherial says:

I’m sorry but how can the person who was the AHL scoring leader have to find a niche as a defensive forward? Unless I am misreading this article.

This whole thing seems wierd to me.

I was just on startribune.com and read nothing about westrum being signed by the leafs……

  13. LeafsLeafsLeafs says:

    Ok then I found this…..

“Attorney Neil Sheehy, also a former NHL player, reports that ex-Gopher Erik Westrum, who was in the Wild farm system last year, and his former teammate John Pohl, who was in the Blues organization at one time, have signed one-way contracts with Toronto.”

not sure how legit this is.

  14. Marky2Fresh says:

He played with Patrick O’Sullivan, no wonder he had such good numbers

  15. leafs4cup says:

i’d take allison before either of them, Isbisters shit and lindros is only good for 30 games. allison maybe slow but he makes the people around him better and is great on the powerplay, mccabe pony and tucker all had break out years and a big part of that was because of allison

  16. intothevoid001 says:

colaiacovo is a defencemen and wellwood plays in the nhl already, what’s the issue?

  17. toronto77 says:

crap….i hate signing players of his age who haven’t gotten any NHL action…he’s probably no different than Pohl.

  18. toronto77 says:

I thinks he’s talking about re-signing them, i don’t think JFJ has done that yet, he obviously will eventually, but i’ll be pist if we lose them.

  19. toronto77 says:

Wellwood is a good player…I don’t why some leaf fans don’t have faith in this guy….and i’m getting pretty sick of defending him…..he’s a GOOD player, nough said.

Should crack the line-up this year…good player that can contribute…will do well under Maurice…on another note l think the sleeper this year to crack the line-up is Nikolai Kulemin, this guy can flat out play hockey, strong as an bull and play’s safe hockey (not to creative with the puck but has great skills) He played on the same line as Malkin and Ovechkin and was overshadowed by them…was the Rookie of the year for the Russian Super League and played an important part in the world Juniors….l think this kid has the tools to play with the big boys this year, he’s one year younger than Malkin and a little shorter but heavier, posses’ a heavy slap shot and is accurate at mid-range, great in the corners and has good hockey vision…Any thoughts out there on this kid from people who may know more about him?

  21. Leafs93 says:

First of all Erik Westrum will not be wearing blue and white any time soon…..Secondly, I’d like to share some insight with a couple of you newbs….The trade of a back-up goalie (ie// aubin/tellqvist) is likely on the horizon, the leafs have sum holes to fill up front and need the cap space to do so. Look for Tellqvist to go in a package deal or for a mid-range draft pick or young prospect. JFJ has approx. 4 mill left to spend and bell, harrison, coliacovo, pilar, stajan, and wellwood remain RFA’s. Roberts is an option however aquiring him may not make economical sense….Lindros is likely to remain a leaf costing the team in the neighbourhood of 750,000 a year…Furthermore, there is undeniable interest in both peca, and carter if they are willing to take less money to play in toronto as reported however as previously stated the leafs need to free up cap space sometime soon because carter an peca are looking for contracts between 2-3 million for peca, and 3+ for carter…..And please dont say oh well they have four mill lets let the young kids skip town and sign lindros, and peca or carter…in the new NHL developing youth is a necessity, and JFJ has been quoted as saying he desires sum wiggle room UNDER the cap in order to aquire an impact player further along in the season or at the trade deadline if necessary for a possible play-off run…….Finnally, the future is looking brighter for the leafs with the studs on the back end however, if your going to win a stanley cup in the new NHL you cannot depend on the likes of antropov, kilger, and john pohl for secondary scoring….now GO LEAFS GO!

  22. leaf_20 says:

hey sry to burst ur bubble hes on a one way contract this means he cant play for the marlies hes only gunna play for the leafs unless he is traded

  23. burnz30 says:

There is still no word from TSN, Sportsnet, the NHL, or the Leafs themselves. This could be a real nice signing, but it doesn’t seem to be official yet. He wasn’t the league leader either. His 98pts in 71 games was second to Kirby Law’s 110pts in 80 games. I think that i’d be a little skeptical of his point totals, as he played with O’Sullivan and the point leader Kirby Law. He’s got 5 full AHL season under his belt, and up till last year he was getting 30-40 points and all of a sudden he jumps to 98. Still, if it happens it would be a good addition. At the very least he’s a tenacious checker that might be able to put up some good point totals. I’m just a liitle curious as to why no one is reporting this.
