“Nicklas Lidstrom appears ready to lay out the “Welcome, Mats” sign.

The Red Wings captain was up front yesterday about his desire to have Leafs captain Mats Sundin join Detroit for the club’s playoff run.

Sundin has repeatedly said he won’t waive his no-trade clause. But that doesn’t stop his teammate from Sweden’s 2006 Olympic gold-medal squad from wishing otherwise.

“I don’t know if Mats wants to move, but a lot of teams would get a lot of help if Mats were to join them,” Lidstrom said.

“From what I hear, he wants to stay there. So I guess that ends that discussion.”

The Leafs and Red Wings face off at the Air Canada Centre today (3 p.m., CBC).

Whether Sundin joins them or not, the Wings seem poised for another deep playoff run. They haven’t missed the playoffs since 1989-90. “

In my oppinion, if Mats was traded to the wings, it would make almost every Leaf fan a short term Wings fan. Partly because Mats is playing for them, and partly because the deal would be incentive driven. So the Leafs would get more if the Wings did better in the playoffs.
