Maple Leafs Rumour: Team Interested In Bernier, Is He An Upgrade On Scrivens And Reimer?

The rumour that the Toronto Maple Leafs have an interest in trading for the Los Angeles Kings’ goalie Jonathan Bernier apparently will not die despite it being a terrible idea to move assets for the 24 year old. In the summer, Andi Petrillo passed along a HockeyyInsiderr (not the funny one, at least not intentionally so) rumour that the Maple Leafs made an offer to Jonathan Bernier which didn’t really make any sense because that’s not how trades work. Chemmy’s conclusion that it was likely a move to put a little bit of pressure on the Roberto Luongo trade negotiations with the Vancouver Canucks seemed right.

More recently, one of the last rumours to come out of the Brian Burke Era was that he was done negotiating with the Kings:

Sadly, it seems to have come back under new GM Dave Nonis. Although, you have to think that this is once again a bargaining tactic just like Gillis saying that he’ be happy starting the season with two starters and multiple holes in his lineup is just posturing.

Obviously, my reaction tilted towards abject panic that the Leafs might be about to part with some useful assets for a Bernier because he’s not an upgrade on what the Leafs currently have. There was some dissent on Twitter about that as they either felt he was an upgrade (he’s not) or felt it was better to pay less for Bernier than Luongo. I think it’s better to trade for a really good goalie than a bad goalie even if one costs $4M more and is signed through to the next Mayan Apocalypse. Especially for a team that can afford almost any possible cap penalty under the “Luongo Rule” moreso when the salary cap will continue to increase as evidenced by the massive outpouring of attention that training camps have received.

Looks like Connolly is not at practice for the Leafs. Is he done? me thinks yes. He will likely be on waivers.

    One of the worst signings.

    • Trade Man says:

Was he really that bad? What is his yearly salary?

      • 93killer93 says:

The cap hit is 4.75 mil and the Leafs had to pay him 4mil this year.

      • mojo19 says:

Tim Connolly played really well for a good stretch of games last year. But Connolly is Connolly, he was hurt on and off all year, and then came back from his injuries kind of slowly. The inconsistency was not worth the price tag.

Next summer is someone signs Tim for a year or two at around $1.5 million or something then that’s a decent signing. A veteran who can play, but far from a game breaker or significant piece to the puzzle.

Nonis starting to clean up Burke’s mess. Lombardi gone, Connolly now gone, waivers as per Dreger and MacKenzie.

Frattin and Kadri will get their chance me thinks

    • doorman says:

Ya, I agree with the mess as far as Connolly goes, but Lombardi will have a good year in Phx and was really taken in order to get Franson. To which we need to remember was all had for Brett Freakin lebda, lol. So Franson and possibly a 3rd for Lebda, thats a good mess, lol.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Weird given how thin we are at center if Nonis plays on moving Kadri and Bozak.

Have to think he’s making room for a move.

      • kessel_leafs81 says:

I think now we’ll keep kadri, supposedly van wanted bozak and gunnarson but we wanted to give up bozak and kadri.. kadri’s impressing during training camp and given on how well reilly/blacker/holzer do in training camp could very well allow us to pull the trigger. Fransons having a good training camp also. I agree with the lombardi and connolly moves, opens spots for our younger players.

        To Van: bozak, gunnarson, 3rd

        To Tor: luongo

        lupul – kadri/colborne/JVR – kessel

        JVR/kadri – grabovski – macarthur

        kulimen – mcclement – frattin

        komarov – steckel – brown

        phaneuf – franson

        gardiner – liles

        reilly – ranger

        maybe another depth defence signing

looks like a pretty decent lineup to me, with only needing one top line Center, and time for gardiner and reilly to develop with maybe trying to add a top 4 big, defensive dman

        • nordiques100 says:

possible lines for saturday appear to be, barring injury:

          brown-mcclement-steckel or orr or frattin

though it appears now frattin will be demoted. I am fine with that because he wont get top 9 minutes. I hope no one claims hamilton.

they may carry 8 blueliners with fraser and kostka making the team. Komisarek could be in the press box.

i see reilly going to junior and them keeping holzer to not lose him on waivers. he’d be the 8th defenceman.

          • kessel_leafs81 says:

id actually prefer getting rid of bozak for a piece to free up space for frattin and give kadri a real good shot on the first or second line.. i dont mind the idea of trying to get the mac grabo kuli line back together and giving kadri somebody to play with by moving JVR down on the third line with him but is komarov a 3rd line player yet? prefer putting frattin in that position.

          • mojo19 says:

I’m actually digging the youth. Get Connolly and Lombo out of there. Get some grit back on the team with Orr, Komorov. Looking good. And I agree with what you’re saying about Frattin, Nords.

        • mojo19 says:

If Nonis trades Carl Gunnarsson and Tyler Bozak for Luongo without getting a top prospect or 1st round pick back from Vancouver as well I will boycott the Leafs until Nonis’ inevitable firing in the next year or two.

  3. mapleleafsfan says:

Anyone take a stab at Leland Irving or Karlsson on waivers? I’d take Irving for free, first overall pick a few years ago, pretty skilled guy.

  4. mojo19 says:

I’d take a shot on 24 year old Irving. He was a late first rounder a few years back, not 1st overall, but I hear what you’re saying.

Karlsson on the other hand hasn’t shown a ton. You never know with young goalies but right now I don’t think he’d out perform Rynnas even on the depth chart.

  5. mojo19 says:

Hoping for this line up to start the year –

    Lupul – Bozak – Kessel
    Mac – Grabo – Kuley
    JVR – Kadri – Komarov
    Brown – McC – Orr

    Phaneuf – Gunner
    Kostka – Franson
    Liles – Fraser

    *Steckel, Komisarek, Holzer

    • mojo19 says:

Really for this group to be successful we need Reimer to be great and give us timely saves, we need Kessel and Lupul to do it up again, we need Komarov to step in and make an impact, Kadri has to step up, everyone has to play great defensive hockey, and everyone has to be at their best, especially JVR, Kulemin, Grabovski, MacArthur, and Phaneuf.

  6. mojo19 says:

Who knows, if they buy into Randy Carlyle hockey this team could turn a few heads. More likely to finish in last than first, but could be in the playoff hunt. Which would be cool.

If we miss the playoffs we might as well finish dead last.

  7. toronto77 says:

After hearing Kessel’s comments about his friendship with Bozak, I would be cautious to trade this guy. I am not a big fan of Bozak and especially not a big fan of him as our no.1 centre.

But Kessel will be a UFA at the end of next season, and we need every reason we can to keep him here, WE CANNOT LOSE KEESEL FOR NOTHING.

If keeping Bozak will encourage Kessel to resign than keep him, however I do feel Bozak should be demoted to the third line because he is not a top 6 player at all on any team in this league. But keeping Bozak somewhere in the line up should be good enough to make Kessel happy, than trade Bozak a year
