OVERHAULIN' – Philadelphia's Plan for the Future

Phili will NOT be making the playoffs this year, just accept it and build for next season. Here is my plan for Philis future:

The following players need to be traded PRIOR to the deadline:

Forsberg – Trade to Colorado for Svatos, Vaananen, 2nrd rdp. You won’t get more than that and Forsberg needs to go because when he’s injured the Flyers don’t believe in themselves enough to win. They need to gain self confidence in one another and Forsberg can’t be a part of that.

Calder – Come the deadline he won’t cost much and could be traded for a 3rd rdp, possibly a 2nd if he picks his game up between now and then.

Kapanen – Trade for a low draft pick, could provide experience to a young team.

Hatcher – Not going to be easy, maybe a desperate team cough* Edmonton would take him with a 2nd rdp for a 3rd rdp.

Baumgartner – At the deadline there will be teams needing a dman and although he will cost $1.2 M next year, someone may be willing to take the chance for a low draft pick.

Esche – Atleast one team in contention will lose a goalie to injury so he could be grabbed for a 3rd rdp.

Resign the following players:

Fedoruk – .75 M
York – 2.5 M
Svatos – 2 M
Vaananen – 1.5 M
Pitkanen – 2.5 M
Nittymaki – 2 M

Now that we’ve cleaned house and resigned, its time to go after some UFA’s:

Phili most definetely needs help on defense; they need to sign one big name and one smaller one, they also need a goalie who can push Nittymaki for the #1 position, a top 6 forward and a 4th liner, I suggest:

KimmoTimonen – 5 M
Eric Brewer – 3 M (could probably trade for a 2nd rdp right now)
Martin Biron – 2 M, great goalie who’s been back up for too long
Ladislav Nagy – 4 M, could be a nice fit on thie team
Jason Ward – .75 M

The team would be as follows:

Gagne – Richards – Svatos
Nagy – Carter – Knuble
Umberger – York – Sanderson
Fedoruk – Ward – Ruziska

Timonen – Pitkanen
Zhitnik – Brewer
Gauthier – Vaananen

Nittymaki
Biron

Phili would also get 5 low draft picks (3rd round or lower). Their salary would come to approximately $43 M (4 M under the cap).

Speed is the most important thing. The flyers wil get a lot faster upfront and the spotlight can be on their youth. Richards will be the leader on this team for a long time. He’s more of a set up man so playing with Gagne and Svatos could be a great fit. The second line is also very solid for putting up points with the addition of Nagy. The thrid line is a more seasoned line with big bodies who can put the puck in the net and have beeen around. The fourth line is unbelievably hard working and can dish it out. Improvements on their defense are obvious. Timonen is a leader on the blueline and I dont think Nashville will be able to hold on to him. Brewer is a top 4 dman who will add some more offense if given the chance. With Biron determination for the #1 spot you won’t have a goalie who lets in 6 goals every game he plays.
