Parise, Suter stars of upcoming NHL free-agent frenzy

Whitney signed with the Coyotes as a free agent, so he knows the drill. He’d like to stay there, but like Doan, is wondering about the ownership situation. Is the team going to stay in Phoenix or suddenly load up for Quebec City? Whitney is a good friend of Steve Yzerman in Tampa and there are teams like the Boston Bruins, Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks who could certainly use a 77-point guy. All things considered, he’d like to stay in the desert, with Carolina a second choice because he won a Stanley Cup there and has a home there, but the Hurricanes probably don’t have the money for him.

“I’ve always said if Phoenix matches any offer, I’ll stay there. Obviously, we have a home in Carolina, but with the trade they made for (Jordan) Staal and the money they’re going to give up … I’m not looking for them,” said Whitney, who is in the catbird’s seat. “There seems to be a shortage of scoring now.”

Dallas will certainly make a play for Doan because Stars owner Tom Gaglardi is the money behind the junior Kamloops Blazers and Doan is an investor along with Jarome Iginla and Mark Recchi.

“There is that connection, but I think Shane will stay in Phoenix. It would be hard for me to see him leave. He’s kind of embedded there. My two years there haven’t embedded me like Shane,” said Whitney, laughing.

Brodeur, Whitney and Jaromir Jagr are all 40-year-old free agents. You wouldn’t think there would be a large market for players of that age, but it’s not like it used to be when 30 was old.

The Leafs buy out Armstrong. I have to say I’m pretty surprised by that one. You’d think with the cap going up as much as it did some team would have taken him to reach the floor. I wonder if Pittsburgh would sign him cheap to add some more grit to that line-up.

Schultz appears to NOT be coming to Toronto. Let the criticism of him begin.

I am predicting that the leafs will be big over-payers tomorrow.

My guess is they give prust 4 years 10 mil and gaustad 4 years 15 mil.

Meh I have a feeling Burke will not spend as badly as we think but maybe not as week as we hope. I am hoping to be pleasantly surprised just like the draft.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Morgan Rielly was a pleasant surprise?

      • dumbassdoorman says:

To you maybe not to me ya. I had said in many previous posts I thought he might be the best damn in the draft. They went in with a plan and stuck to it, plus he knew unlike us that he had the Jvr deal in the works. Not to mention that just be chase you do like the pick doesn’t mean I can’t or that I am stupid for doing so.

        • leafs_wallace93 says:

I never called you stupid, the general reaction to the Rielly pick was disgust, I share in that.

As for JVR, I suppose the general reaction is positive but I’m of the opinion that we’re so starved for any talent up front that any trade for a defenceman for a forward (of decent impact) would be welcomed. JVR is hella injury prone, I believe in the long run Schenn is the better talent but Burke created a situation so terrible that it even a questionable trade would be enthusiatically welcomed.

          Again, my opinion.

          • reinjosh says:

We’re so starved in talent that we only finished tenth in league scoring…

            • dumbassdoorman says:

Well I loved the Reilly pick, but that’s just me. I think he is über talented and truly believe he will be a stud.

            • leafs_wallace93 says:

You’re right Joshi we need more blueliners and less forwards, we don’t even a center because we were ’10th in league scoring… I’m sure we’ll be 10th again under Caryle….

Forever the Burke rationalizing hamster huh…

              • Steven_Leafs0 says:

yeah and I’m sure Forsberg would have helped us with our offense even though he was not going to play in the NHL this upcoming season (he is under contract in Sweden for one more year).

                • leafs_wallace93 says:

It’s cool, because our system is filled with high end forward talent right?

                  We’re an offensive juggernaut anyway.

Burke doing a great job, we’re really good hockey team and the future is bright.

                  • reinjosh says:

Your an idiot lol. Let’s take one comment and totally manipulate it for your purposes right? You can’t even read properly, otherwise you would have seen multiple posts of me mentioning that I’m nowhere near a Burke sympathiser, but continue to ignore that.

No move is a good move unless it fits your idea perfectly right? You call for Burke to make a move for an offensive player and look, he does, getting JVR. Then it becomes “oh blah blah blah, excuse, excuse, excuse, it’s still not good enough, it’s not f*cking Malkin/Crosby”.

                    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Lol, I’m an idiot? Didn’t I tell you that this is how the year would play out?

I can’t read? Sure, I’ve put arguments in CAPS in your face and called you out to respond to them and you ignore them but it’s all show to manipulate you though right?

You can’t tell me that you’re not the Burke loyalist, rationalizing his tenure and future day in day out.

BTW WHAT IS BURKE’S PLAN TO BETTER THIS TEAM BECAUSE MOST US DON’T SEE ONE?

My perfect idea is what? Actually pursue good UFAs and act like a big market team? Stop making the same mistakes year in year out? I’m so needy and such a nag that way.

JVR isn’t enough and we both know that, so why do I have to pretend that things are getting better.

JVR costs us a huge asset and that’s the best Burke can do BECAUSE HE’S A DUMB MICK THAT IS TRYING TO BUILD A TEAM EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH TRADES (there’s an argument, care to address it or criticize me instead?). The snake eats it’s own tail, assets in assests out, he’ll win a trade, he’ll lose another, some will be a wash.

JVR isn’t enough and Burke isn’t really going to do much else this summer and you know that but you pretend that it isn’t really the case.

The caps were to help highlight some key points, not meant to be aggressive.

The way I see it, he’s going to settle having a top line of:

Lupul-bozak-kessel with hopes the coaching staff can rectify thier combined atrocious defense coverage.

      The 2nd line will be
      Jvr-grabovski-MacArthur.
      The 3rd
      Komarov-???-kulemin
      4th
      Brown-steckel-???

The ??? Is where I see gaustad and they would help some. Though it could be Connolly and Lombardi cementing Toronto as the greatest collection of wimps in the NHL.

There are a lot of decent players out there. But just adding a prust or a parros still makes this team weak.

This is why I’d prefer a steve ott because he alone could change the complexion of the team. I think gaustad and prust could help, but still the front 6 is weak.

I don’t see Mac, if he stays, a 3rd liner. I see with the way Carlyle matches lines, he needs kulemin to check, unless he makes changes. He is far and away toronto’s best two way forward.

I’d prefer him on the grabo line but everything depends on what Burke does.

The jvr trade gave him some room to breathe, but still a lot of work left I think to do

13 mil for gaustad to stay in nash

On a completely non related topic to anything here…

I really am liking what bergevin is doing in MTL…

The Moen and Emelin signings are fantastic….
Excited to see what a healthy Brendon Nash can bring…
Price should have a nice long term contract soon… I’m guessing 6-6.5 per for 5years…. I’d want to lock him up longer though… I hope Bergevin let’s go Darche campoli blunden… And signs geoffrion .. eller needs a contract as does subban… But its looking good so far under Bergevin…

    Keep it up

    • TimTheBone says:

      Prust signing I like…

Armstrong if healthy is an upgrade over Darche…

And bringing boullion in is great… Liked him a lot when he was here… Little ball of hate for us montrealers…. He’s a solid solid depth guy… But it does leave question marks on defense..

      Markov emelin
      Subban gorges
      Boullion kaberle
      Weber diaz

Does weber diaz or kaberle get moved at some point…. Do they even resign diaz?….. Beaulieu and tinordi should get a good solid season in on the bulldogs… Likely as partners ….

I think it makes us quite solid on defense if healthy…
