Sabres cap troubles

TSN reported yesterday an arbitrator has awarded forward Adam Mair a one-year, $675K contract. the terms of the CBA state that the Sabres have to accept the award because it is less than $1 million. The Sabres payroll is now at $38 million, and Ryan Miller and Dmitri Kalinin are still not re-signed. due to that, it is speculated whether the Sabres will accept J.P. Dumont’s $2.9 million arbitration award, reject it, making him a UFA or accept the award and then trade Dumont or another player to free up cap space. The Sabres must decide this by August 8th.

That cap number includes the 2.9 million for Dumont. The Sabres will either walk away from the award or trade him in a salary dump. Once a backup goalie is secured, Biron and his 2.1 million salary will be traded as well. If you figure the new backup getting around a million, that will be a savings of 1.1 million on the cap.

Once those are figured in, there is still around $9-10 million in cap space for Miller and Kalinin.

they may not b able to get rid of biron b4 the season tho. until all the good RFA goalies are signed as backups or starters, dont expect biron to go anywhere.and if biron is traded, then the sabres will need 2 sign the player the aquire and pick up that salary.

but the sabres won’t spend to the cap

As much as i hate the sabres its tough to see a team get ripped apart because of money issues. Some of those guys should offer to take a pay cut to keep the team together. f they stay together there is a good chance they can win the cup in the next 3 or 4 years. But to some money is more important than a stanely cup ring. I hope Paul Karia wins one with Nashville. He took a pay cut to play on Colorado with teemu

thats very true. briere should take a pay cut down from 5 m dollars to help the team. its like the devils. 50 m dollars spent, gionta and paul martin still to sign. thats probably a combined 4 -5 mill. brodeur, elias and gomez shood take a cut.

listen im not trying to defend the amount players make..but its rare becasue while one of us will have 30-40 years of work nhl players can only make the big bucks for 7 or 8 years

What a poorly written article. Please for the love of all things holy, proof read your articles people, the entire second paragraph did not make sense. Secondly get your facts straight. The CBA states that a club must pick up any contract awarded by an arbitraitor of 1.4 million or less, not 1 million. Please do not pretend to know facts and miss lead others who are still trying to understand the CBA.

lets say i make 100K a year (I wish), and work for 40 years. Thats 4 million in my lifetime. Now if a hockey player plays for 10 years at league minimum, thats 4.5 million in their lifetime. so why don’t more players take the cut to league minimum? simple, they all have agents and lawyers telling them they can make millios more on another team, and the desire o win the cup is overcome by greed. its not atletes fault, is the lawyers fault.

whats 10 000 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean

    a good start

I heard about the 1.4 million stipulation, but wasn’t Tanabe’s award 1.275? Why could Boston walk from it then?

  10. almelo95 says:

Their actual pay right now is only about 35 million. The cap number is higher because of the multi-year deals they’ve signed with all the players this last month. So they could get to the cap with spending maybe $39-41 million in actual salaries.

Says who? Regier said he has the option to do so with the increased ticket sales + new merchandise.

  12. tripleovertime99 says:

Why don’t you get your facts straight? It’s not 1.4 million, it’s 1.04 million. For all intents and purposes, and since no arbitrator will ever award a player 1.0something, it’s 1 million or less.

    “Proofread” not “proof read”

    “mislead” not “miss lead”

  13. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

every team had increased ticket sales, but buffalo should be able to go to 39 millio, allowing kalinin and miller to resign.

  14. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

yeah, but multi year deals screw you in the end. because you pay so much for the last few years of the contract. Connoly and Talinders contracts are both like that.

  15. woodsco85 says:

Sorry, my bad, i knew it was 1.04 and yeah i tottally shot myself in the foot there, I’ll be more careful next time.

  16. tripleovertime99 says:

I meant increased ticket sales as in the 4,000+ increase in season tickets.
