Finally the replacement to Mats Sundin we’ve been looking for.

Even Stamkos spelled backwards is: iS OK MATS.

Who knows whats funny is those stories that never die, like when Burke was suppose to come to Toronto, that story went on for two years (during the ‘dream on Leaf fans’ chorus) until…. You almost never hear expressing interest for Toronto expect for Clarkson, bad contract yes but the fact is we heard legitimate rumblings that he always wanted to be a Leaf during his tenure in NJ.

Two stories I kept hearing, Babcock and Stamkos and we know MLSE will do whatever it takes to facilitate landing them. I expect both to be Leafs.

in 2016 the ages for the core of the leafs will be:

    Kessel: 28
    JVR: 27
    Bozak: 30
    Phaneuf: 31
    Kadri: 25
    Gardiner: 26
    Rielly: 22
    Bernier: 27
    Nylander: 20

Prime, prime, prime. Stammer will fit right in.

my guess is 7 years at 100 million should do it.

Thats about a 14.3 million per season average. 7 years is the max length they can give.

My guess is that in 2016 the cap will have increased an additional 10 million from what it is now so it may roughly be at 80 million cap max.

20% of that is 16 mil. so they’d be “close enough” to the maximum deal and far and away the largest AAV for anyone.

If we guess a 14 million cap hit, that adds to the already 41 million already committed to 8 players. So they’d have 55 million for 9 players, and thus 25 mil to spend on 14 additional roster spots.

Lets assume a highly unlikely scenario of them keeping everyone they have or just using players within their organization….

Gardiner re-signs for 3 years at 3.5 mil per.
Kadri re-signs for 4 years at 4.5 mil per
Bernier is re-signed at 4 years and 5.5 million.
Reilly re-signs a bridge deal at a couple years and 2.5 mil per.
Nylander is with the team making the base 925K salary like all the other draft picks who have already signed this year.

Fred Gauthier is with the team by then making a base salary of 900K. we’ll assume Tom Nilsson is also with the team by then making the same 900K base. and Leivo too at 800K base. i am excluding the bonuses which they can carry over.

players such as Frattin, Ashton, Holland, Granberg, who are free agents in upcoming years all re-sign for anywhere between 800K to 1.5 million.

Thats 12 players at a combined total of roughly 24-25 million, right to the cap max with still 2 roster spots needed. A backup goalie (Bibeau) and a Dman (Percy) would add 1.5 mil to the cap putting them i’d say 1-2 mil over i am guessing.

If i am Stamkos, i am not sure i am coming here without significant changes to that roster. And by that time, 2016, there just very well could be. And there could be even a new GM and coach at the helm working with Shanahan.

It will be very interesting to see what happens. Of those players above that were listed, I think Reilly, Nylander and Bernier are the most likely to be not traded. Anyone else is up for grabs.

Leafs should be building to draw him in over the next two years. At least we’d have a direction or goal. This summer would be a good time to get Kane, replace Lupul in the long term with Kane.

Kadri won’t be a Leaf then, Rielly and Gardiner breaking out and Phaneuf then riding shotgun would be a great blueline. The pieces are there. If we whiff on Stammer then continue to build toward Tavares.

i think Leiweike wont leave unless he gets one of the 2 guys and let that be his legacy if winning isnt happening.

that and the 100 year celebration will be what he so wants to happen.

i think for sure the team will be gutted by 2016. even if 14 mil is way more than the current high that was just paid to Kane/Toews, they got to do it.

What does everybody think of the Reimer deal – $4.6M for 2 years?

If he gets back to form like 2 years ago & first 2 months of last season, could be a steal. He struggled in the second half though.

It depends on Tampa’s performance…If the Lighting are terrible, then he will leave the team.

However…From my perspective, Tampa might be Eastern Conference favorites this season.
