The Canucks D depth compared to their O depth

Okay well, to start this off I am new on this site so please don’t bash me too hard. Also from this point on it will be all about the Canucks so if you don’t like them or the topic of the article don’t bother reading then flaming. Thanks!

I’m sure many Vancouver fans have been wondering for awhile why the Canucks keep acquiring more D. Everyone knows that offense is what we need. We also know that Nonis is taking time which is okay, but then why would he go out of his way to go and acquire another dman in fitzgerald? People say its a depth move but our D is so deep that several of our rookie defenseman won’t even see time in the NHL this year.

On the Canucks almost all our defenseman are of top 4 caliber and on the Moose we have a potential future top 3 in Edler, Bourdon, Rahimi and if Koltsov ever comes to N.A. a top 4. Plus to back that up we have Taylor Ellington, Zach Fitzgerald and Chad Brownlee. Now I like tHAT depth on the backend put what about up front? Who do we have that’s gonna step up, someone we can build around. All we really have is Mayson Raymond, Patrick White, and Michael Grabner and maybe Hansen. That’s not very much. So I was thinking that with all our D depth and I know it’s been discussed several times but I think we should one of our prospect Dmen and a roster player for a top 6. Maybe throw in a pick because our D is really quite deep and is incredibly deep if you compare it to our Forward depth.

In the past we have always drafted what we needed most. When it was defence we drafted Dmen. When it was goalies we drafted goalies, but I think there comes a time when we should draft with more variety. Say you needed a RW you could use your 1st pick for a RW and then your 2nd pick for another RW, but then you would no longer draft RW because you have already used your top 2 picks for that position so you can always try to find draft steals in later rounds drafting whatever you need next.In the 2007 draft, since the Canucks needed a centerman to build around, we drafted 3 centerman but in this order C D C LW C RW. Last year, in the 2006 draft we noticed we were short RW so we drafted in this order RW D RW RW LW. I think you get my point. Anyways I think not just who we have draft but our mentality of drafting has something to do with our depth.

I hope you enjoyed the read if not flame away.

Thanks!
