This one catches me off guard, although the Habs have been slumping lately. How many heads have rolled now? 6 or 7? I don’t want to know who’s next. Hopefully the Habs will turn it around in the second half and get out of this tailspin.

  2. guinsfan4life says:

This firing just reaks. The Canadiens organization should be ashamed of this. Last year, Therrien helped this team reach farther than anyone thought possible, and now he is fired. The Canadiens overachieved last year with him behind the bench and his players quit on him this year, so he is fired.

I wonder how he went from being a good coach last year, to being a bad one in less than a year. Must have been the water in Montreal.

Maybe the onus should be put on Theodore, for coming into this year playing like crap, or Audette, Czerkawski for making money and not producing, and other players who haven’t lived up to expectations.

I say, fire all the players. Instead of bringing up Claude Julien from the Hamilton Bulldogs in the AHL, send down all of the current NHL roster and bring up everyone from the minors and keep Therrien behind the bench.

  3. HabsPunk says:

although theo had a bad start, he has been one of the better goalies in the league over the past month or so. i’d like to see what the average shots for and against are for the Habs. a good nhl coach should be able to his team outshoot their opponents more than once a month. no defensive system equals 40 shots against per game. they got badly outshot by atlanta for crying out loud. therrien wasnt up to the nhl level. he took his team to the nhl last year because of theo. with any other goalie, the habs wouldnt have been even close last year, it had nothing to do with the coach.

  4. HabsPunk says:

er he took his team to the playoffs* last year because of theo

time for me to get some more sleep…..

  5. mikster says:

I don’t think Therrien did anything to make this team better in the first place. Who got this team in the playoffs last season???

    I know…

Therrien also has no history on his resume`.

This coach, Julien….don’t know much about him, but he might give them a spark.

This is exactly why you never give extensions to coaches after one good season or just one good first half (i.e. Tortorella).

Sure, the Canadiens don’t have such a deep line up, especially on defense, but when you have guys like Zednik, Koivu, and now Hossa, playing strong….you have to come up with wins. Maybe Czerkawski could not fit in Therrien’s system or ways of coaching, he might turn his reputation around now.

I think it was a good move, nothing to lose. Obviously, it’s a shame that coaches really get the kick when players don’t do their jobs, but changes must happen.

I’ve never seen these many coaches get fired in a season, more to come? Who knows….Andy Murray ain’t making his Kings team any better. Is ti his fault? No, i don’t think it is since the GM should add more depth instead of just Allison.

I am having a hard time believing Therrien didn’t have anything at all to do with the success last year. As far as I am concerned, the players play. I know for a fact Therrien didn’t coach the players into allowing 40 shots per game. Why was their defense so effective last year under his coaching and porous this year???

  7. Phailak says:

I thought Therrien was a good guy, but even last year I did not see the Habs having a system of play in place, unless being outshot is some kind of strategy.

The change of air will do some good for some vets like Czerkawski and Audette who are simply not producing. Maybe now I won’t have to see D-men like Traverse and Dykhuis log in so much ice time.

What I really hate is that for the fourth time in a row, we are going with a coach with no NHL experience (Tremblay, Vigneault & Therrien), hopefully, Julien can cut it…

  8. Phailak says:

If you remember the games last year, shot amounts were similar to this year’s, difference was Theo was magical!!! I can still remember the Habs winning over Boston even though they had triple their shots!!!

There was just not a good system with Therrien, if there was one at all…

  9. guinsfan4life says:

Shots have increased this year because of the way the game has changed. If Theo even has a year remotely close to the one he had last year, THerrien doesn’t get canned. If Auddette and Czerkawski play the way they are capable, the Habs are in the playoff fight even if Therrien’s system is crap, like you say.

  10. Bossy22 says:

The main reason the habs are in the middle of the pack is they lost a key contributor to their success last year. GUY CARBONNEAU. Throughout the league last year they were in the top five teams in penatly killing. What are they this year??? Last

They should have never let him go.

  11. Phailak says:

    Yep I agree!

Theo is not doing as great that’s for sure, but that could be expected. Audette and Czerkawski should be producing regardless of the coach, if they can wake up and we can still have Saku and Zednik in the form they are now, we will definately make the playoffs. Our D sucks though, Therrien or not, the defencemen are weak physically and still can’t support the offensive (except for Markov)

  12. Bossy22 says:

As much as us HAB fans think Therien has taken the fall for the players lack of playing….were all wrong. Therien was carried by Carbonneau last year. Anyone that didn’t see that…well watch and learn. Carbonneau brought not only leadership but a strong PK and heart to the dressing room.

Therien’s lack of letting the players play their natural positions well I just couln’t believe my eyes sometimes. Why is Patrice still playing?? Making many defensive errors. Bring up some of the younger players and let them develop. Not giving Marius and Donald respectable ice time with reliable line mates. Many many errors were made with Therien. Being outshot in just about every game. His coaching style just plain horrible.

He never had the wits of a bonified NHL coach.

Lets not let him take to much credit for last year.

  13. peanut_butter_shelf says:

As a non-fan of the Canadiens I hate this firing. This absolutely gives Montreal a chance to succeed.

The best way to describe Therien’s system is as follows: Not Offensive, Not Defensive!!! His system allows way too many shots on his own net in hopes that the other team’s D will be lulled into a deep sleep so that Montreal can get good scoring opportunities on there 12 shots on net.

I don’t think that there is another coach in the league that couldn’t find a spot for Czerkawski in the lineup if they had him from the beginning of the season. He was “on fire” in the preseason. He has some of the best hands in the league. And Therien has him flip flopping between the 4th line, the bench, and the minors. How about putting him on a line with a scorer so he can set up some offense. Nah, too hard headed in his ways. Not to be offensive in anyway but his french attitude shows in his team.

The replacement may not be the long term answer but neither is Therien.

He showed his ass in the playoffs last year against Carolina. They had the Canes 2 games to 1 and were up by 2 or 3 goals. You are always gonna get bad penalties called on you. It is a coach’s job to control his team and to overcome those penalties. Instead he had a temper tantrun similar to that of a 3 year old and cost his team yet another dumb penalty(bench minor) in which Carolina scored. That was “The Point” that the “entire” momentum of the series was shifted to the Canes. That my friends is why Therien sucks and it is a bloody shame that he is no longer on the Habs bench.

    Bye Bye Michelle–Off ya go!!!

Montreal has talent. Michelle doesn’t. Who knows how far the Habs might have gone last year with a solid coach.

  14. peanut_butter_shelf says:

so your the bum that stole the name I wanted.

    Just Kidding, ya bum.

Bossy22- so catchy, I just love it.

  15. Bossy22 says:

hehe. Thanks. Still the greatest goal scorer to ever play the game

  16. Bossy22 says:

    Great Comments!!

  17. edmontonrules says:

Carbonneau should be the coach in Montreal. He is one of the best there is at what he does. Why why why did they let him go?

  18. Obcd says:

Well Therrien won the Memorial Cup with the Granby Predators and the year after Julien won it with the Hull Olympiques

  19. rojoke says:

You obviously haven’t been to any Canadiens forums. Over at, there is post after post calling for his head, dating back to November.

  20. rojoke says:

When you get outshot 17-3 in a period, that’s unacceptable? When you REPEATEDLY get outshout in periods with margins like 17-3, it’s grounds for termination. Make no mistake, the team needs a much better blue line. But it’s also obvious it needed a new coach. They had yet to play a full 60-minute game. When it happens once in a while, it’s the players. When it happens just about every night, it’s the coach.

  21. rojoke says:

From the games I’ve seen this season (and I have missed one or two) and last, Therien seemed to like playing a dump-and-chase system. And it usually worked. Whenever they’d dump it in, they’d end up chasing the opposing forwards back up ice. Maybe if he taught a dump-and-RETRIEVE system, he’d still be behind the bench.

  22. frankie says:

Ok, me personnally, I always loved Therrien since he was in the juniors but never tought at the time he would become an NHL coach. Anyway, I ilke him a lot but I also think it is a good move since I believe anyway he would’nt have been back next year nor will Claude Julien.

I really think Jacques Martin will become the Canadiens head coach in the summer. I’m sure Savard wanted to do it last summer but the habs with Therrien had too much of a good end of season so he had to let Therrien there. On his side then, Jacques Martin signed for 1 year in Ottawa.

So, I believe and hope I must say that Julien, will not do too good creating a need for an experience coach like Jacques Martin. Andre Savard being a former senator scout who brought a lot of former Ottawa Senators players in Montreal may well now bring the coach.

This is only speculation, this a dream of an Montreal Canadiens fan that still, seems to make sense !

let me know what you think !

  23. Nevermind says:

I agree with you. Carbonneau was a major factor in the success the Habs got last year. Hopefully Julien will ba able to do a better job than Therrien. I liked Hartley as coach. But I read he was too much like Therrien and that’s why Savard didn’t go for him. Let’s see what happeneds…

  24. Nevermind says:

Bill 101…His kid couldn’t go to English private school. It’s Quebec’s way of keeping their offical language French. Oh well, that’s one of the prices you pay as a province…

  25. frankie says:

yeah! we should change all this cause we’re losing some good hockey assistant coaches !

  26. habsoverserver says:

They didn’t let him go – he left – officially because of his daughter being unable to study in English. Who knows if that’s the real reason?

  27. habsoverserver says:

Exactly right, except you forgot to mention that he never used his temper to defend his players who got pummelled every night. Remember in NYC last month, when Joe Juneau was elobwed in the head, left the game with a concussion and the Habs never bothered to fight anyone to denfend their teammate? Gutless.

  28. habsoverserver says:

Forget Martin, get him to bring Hossa, Alfedsson, Havlat and Chara.
