Toronto and Phoenix close?

Okay, take this for exactly what it is, a rumour.

Phoenix has been knocking on Toronto’s door recently, and now seems to be stepping up into the Ed Belfour talk. It appears as though Phoenix is seriously trying to get Ed Belfour from Toronto, and has a package of players that they would be willing to move, in exchange for the right pieces from the Maple Leafs. Reports out of Phoenix are indicating that the Coyotes would ship Mike Comrie, Curtis Joseph, and one of either Paul Mara or Derek Morris to Toronto, but their list of demands is high. In return, the ‘Yotes want Belfour, along with two young bright spots in Toronto’s depth charts, Kyle Wellwood and Andy Wozniewski.

New reports today indicate that Toronto has counter-offered the Coyotes original plan, looking at hanging onto Wellwood, and shipping Nikolai Antropov to Phoenix instead. This deal may also hinge on whether Toronto would add one more prospect to the deal.

Also, this would tie into Canada’s “Globe And Mail” report. Tim Wharnsby reports MLSE chairman Richard Peddie watched Saturday’s Leafs-Ottawa Senators game with GM John Ferguson Jr. Following the game Peddie was overheard saying to Ferguson, “”I’m going to the [Toronto Raptors basketball] game [on Sunday]. I’ll be around. So if you want to do any of the stuff we talked about tonight, let me know and I will let the board know.” Peddie also told Wharnsby that, while he doesn’t know if anything’s imminent, he admitted his GM was “working on trades”.

what kind of stupid ass trade would that be for oth toronto and phoenix? why would they want a 40 year old goalie when they are’nt in a playoff spot?

  2. Aetherial says:

    This sounds like total BS.

I believe something is brewing in Leafland, even it is is minor.

I can’t see belfour waiving his no-trade to go to Phoenix, unless Phoenix picks up his option next year… and I REALLY can’t see that happening.

    It sounds almost impossible

If I am Toronto I do it, then I flip CuJo to Edmonton for a young D propect.

  3. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

i dont see phoenix wanting belfour, maybe wanting wellwood and woz, but after the season eddie has had, It may be that Pheonix wanted to dump a bunch of players on the leafs, (Cujo and Mara/Morris) and the leafs needed to give up a big contract to stay under the cap?

  4. sufferingleaf says:

It would be typical Leafs bring back old washed up favourite players. Paul Mara for Andy Wozniewski mabey but basically sideways trade.

  5. PaulK123 says:

This would be a great deal for the Leafs but I don’t see it happening. The Leafs are going to be over-loaded on defense with White, Harrison, Coliacovo and Kronvall coming up I belive this is a good deal. The only porblem is that I don’t see why Phoenix would want Ed”the Pigeon” Belfour, this guy is old and its not like Phoenix is gonna be in the playoffs.Maybe they will pick up on his option?

  6. goose says:

very gud trade, but i hav ma own:

1st: to phoenix: belfour, berg, and (klee or khavanov) for

to toronto: cujo, morris, and mara

2nd: to phoenix: antropov and maybe (prospect or draft pick) for

    to toronto: arnason

  7. sufferingleaf says:

Typical Leaf fan dreaming in technicolour giving away C*** for decent players.

  9. hackm says:

Toronto: Ed Belfour, Andy Woz & Kyle Wellwood (Or Nik Antropov & a pick/prospect)

To Phoenix, for: Curtis Joseph, Mike Comrie and Paul Mara (or Derek Morris)

    ????

    That’s f*cking BS.

Remove Belfour and Joseph from their respective sides. And it’s still BS. Cause Mara (or Morris) and Comrie would have them pushing the CAP, or slightly over–unless they add Antro.

But even in that case — it’s still BS. The chance of Toronto picking up ‘names’ at a selling point, is unlikely — yes, unlikely, even with retards in managerial positions. I think even they will lumber, bumble their way to a ‘selling mindstate’.

Got no problem with moving Woz, though, everyones going on about what a great prospect he is.. blah blah… he’s 26! Signed on as depth! Pohl is 27, as depth! These guys aren’t future. Well, maybe future staples with the Marlies.

Sorry, I’m not shooting the messenger.

Just any reports out of Phoenix. I’ve learned that they’re even more unreliable than the Globe, Star, Sun.. in T.O.

  11. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Remember, Gretz loves the geezers, and Eddie is 2 years older then CuJo.

  12. NHLSlayer says:

Yeah for sure I hear ya on that one…

I post here whenver I hear something semi-reliable, sometimes right, sometimes wrong. I think other than goaltending issues, this deal could work…

Personally, my belief is that something is in the works to deal Belfour between now and Thursday, if you want evidence, look no further than the fact that J.S. Aubin has been practicing with the big squad all week…

Who knows…as far as the Leafs go, they’re done for this year, anyways. All this talk of Habs fans coming in on the convos, and trying to trash Toronto fans will be moot, when they realize just how quickly that 8th seed, WHOEVER it is, is nothing but first round fodder for the real teams to play against…

  13. hackm says:

Isn’t Racine joining in a few practices too, I heard? Not sure…

But Belfour’s gone no matter what.

  14. PaulK123 says:

btw arnason is on the blackhawks

keep wilm, he’s a solid 4th line center

  17. hackm says:

Jason Allison, Clarke Wilm & Ben Ondrus to the Calgary Flames for Jordan Leopold & Chuck Kobasew (haha)

Aki Berg to the Nashville Predators’ for Predators’ 4th-round pick in 2006 (Berg is going to get a low-2nd if he’s traded)

Alexander Khavanov to the Vancouver Canucks for the Canucks’ 6th-round pick in 2006 (probably have to waive Khavanov)

Mariusz Czerkawski & Brendan Bell to the Washington Capitals for Jeff Friesen (haha)

Jeff O’Neill to the Carolina Hurricanes for Hurrincanes’ 3rd-round pick in 2007 (You could get more for O’Neil, he’s not a UFA, but he’s not going back to the Canes and probably not going anywhere.)

  18. hackm says:

And why is every Leaf fan obsessed with Joseph?

I’m a diehard Leaf fan… and the guy left, crying his eyes out over ‘Joe Siv’… saying he’d never go back to Toronto, ‘that awful city’.

    lol.

  19. lukeleim says:

Jason Allison, Clarke Wilm & Ben Ondrus to the Calgary Flames for Jordan Leopold & Chuck Kobasew (haha)?? Ben Ondrus has grit which sutter has publicly said he wanted. Wilm is a good depth player.

Mariusz Czerkawski & Brendan Bell to the Washington Capitals for Jeff Friesen (haha)

last thing i heard was that friesen was probably going to be waived, so its not like the caps wont accept.

Cole was injured and O’Neill could be agreat replacement… pull your head out of your ass before you mock my trades.

  20. 92-93 says:

    nope nope nope.

and how can people on this site get away with reporting rumours without providing a source. when i speculate, i come right out and say that i am speculating. but if its a ‘rumour’ – give the source of it.

otherwise, this is just something that was concoted – i.e. a speculation that you came up with on your own.

  21. NHLSlayer says:

Why does every fool think that instead of one trade, you can be your own NHL06 manager, and swing 800 different trades? NOTE: IN THE NEW NHL, THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!! One trade, two tops, will be what you are looking at…

Grand total for deals at draft day, the over/under is at 8! That’s how quiet you can expect Thursday to be…

  22. cdeezy says:

I just wanna see the leafs get rid of antropov, belfour, berg, belak and czerkawski. woznewski is 26 I don’t really consider that being a prospect if someone wants him get rid of him

  23. hackm says:

Sorry.. I didn’t feel like responding last night, ala ‘haha’..

Jason Allison, Clarke Wilm & Ben Ondrus to the Calgary Flames for Jordan Leopold & Chuck Kobasew (haha)?? Ben Ondrus has grit which sutter has publicly said he wanted. Wilm is a good depth player.

*** Leopold may be available. But Kobesew is a staple on that team. It’d take more than Allison-A loan. Wilm-Underrated Depth and Ondrus-A Bust/Never Was. Those three going for Leopold alone is more reasonable. If you want LEopold and Kobesew, think:

Toronto: Jason Allison, Darcy Tucker and Ian White + a 2nd in 06.

For: J. Leopold and C. Kobesew.

    So: Allison + a 2nd for Leopold.

and: Kobesew for Tucker and White.

    That’s about right.

That deal, Calgary might accept. Still, I might be low-balling. Kobesew is having a bad season, but they maintain pretty high hopes on him, for some reason…

Mariusz Czerkawski & Brendan Bell to the Washington Capitals for Jeff Friesen (haha)

*** I know Friesen might get waived. I laughed because you’d be willing to part with so much to get a $2.2m dollar guy with 7 points in almost 40 games and who might get waived anyway. Czerkawski alone is worth as much as Friesen. And capable of producing more, with $1.6m less under the Cap.

If you want Jeff Friesen, they won’t accept Czerkawski. They’re clones.

Toronto: Clarke Wilm + Future Considerations

    Washington: J. Friesen

  24. RBKHockey06 says:

Grumblings overheard by an accquaintance employed by MLSE indicate that a potential deal for Martin Biron to either Toronto or Los Angeles may be in the works. The sabres are interested in a combination of prospects and draft picks (supposedly Kyle Wellwood and a 2nd round pick), however the dealbreaker could be which team is willing to dig into their prospects more…

  25. goose says:

If the leafs do dat trade please do send antropov cuz he is shit and dunt get joseph cuz da leafs already hav 3 awsome goaltenders: aubin, pogge, and raycroft. We need a fast and skilled player like mike comrie. If we get the players den it wuld be like dis.

    new players: derek morris

    mike comrie

    andrew raycroft

    ggoalies: starter: aubin

    back up: raycroft

    3rd: pogge

dis wuld make a gud and hard team 2 beat and da leafs wuld be a great team.
