Kevin McGran Sports Reporter, Toronto Star writes …

Trade speculation is heating up. The hot ones making the rounds:

Centre Ryan O’Reilly from Colorado, with Jake Gardiner and maybe Tyler Bozak going the other way.

Phaneuf and his monstrous contract to L.A. for Mike Richards (Phaneuf has six years left at $7 million, Richards five at $5.75 million).

On the ROR trade…I can see Colorado doing that deal. They get some more depth on the back-end and up-front, but it might be Kadri and not Bozak. However, I think I would prefer Bozak…Who has been pretty solid for the Leafs.

LA? Not so much. I understand why Toronto would do it…But why LA?

Also, Toronto might not be able to get into Connor McDavid/Jack Eichel territory…But, a top-10 position could bring a new ‘best friend’ to Nylander, like a Crouse or Strome.

    • Steven_Leafs0 says:

You are kidding right? While Phaneuf is over paid he is still a top pairing defenseman capable of playing over 20 minutes a night. Richards is a 4th line center playing minimal minutes. If he doesn’t turn it around in Toronto then we lost our top defenseman for a 3rd/4th line over paid center.

We get worse. If LA is willing to send a great asset or two back then we can make the deal to start the rebuild as we can trade Phaneuf without taking back a bad contract anyway.

  2. leafy says:

Gardiner right now has NEGATIVE value. Nobody would take him even for free, let alone give up a ROR on top. Perhaps Bozak or Kadri is thrown in to sweeten the deal to make Colorado take Gardiner off our hands (ie, by over estimating the value of Bozak or Kadri). It would be fantastic news if it happened.

    • kessel_leafs81 says:

Highly disagree leafy.. Gardiners still only 24 and with offensive dmen, more consistent play comes with experience and you can’t deny that when the leafs are down by a goal like in that sj game, Gardiner picks up his play and becomes torontos best damn and shows desperation.. There is definitely a market for him

      • leafy says:

The thing is I hate Gardiner’s offense too. In my opinion, he provides negligible offense to justify tolerating his awful defense.

        • LN91 says:

He has stuggled, but I do not doubt that some team would be interested.

Some teams have 0 hope on blueline, atleast there’s a ceiling with Gardiner.

          • leafy says:

Only way teams are interested is if the leafs add something hot to the deal. I don’t know what that something is, but I don’t think Bozak or Kadri will be enough.

            • LN91 says:

Yeah, I highly doubt that…His value is not high, but not as low as you’re saying.

Do you really think that if Gardiner went on waivers, no one would pick him up? Not Edmonton? Not Islanders?

He has struggled, but teams are not dumb enough to not know there’s a ceiling there…Not to mention plays for the Leafs, which is a disaster of an organization from players to coaches.

      • lafleur10 says:

they have tyson barrie so they wouldn’t take gardiner

      • lafleur10 says:

they have tyson barrie who’s surpassed gardiner and is miules ahead of him and cheaper to so i don’t see that as an option maybe a package with kadri, percy 1st d pick

    • 93killer93 says:

Morgan Rielly and William Nylander. Maybe keep Bernier in there as well. Anyone else is fair game.

    • doorman says:

No player is untouchable, period. That being said, player I would keep, Bernier, JVR, Rielly, Nylander, Komorov, and if salary can be moved and demands aren’t outrageous I also keep Franson, Winnik and Santorelli. I also keep Robidas, he is a solid vetern with a rep for helping younger players and this team will need that IF they blow it up.

  3. leafy says:

Without trades, what Leafs have to look forward to? This:
    6 yrs of Phaneuf
    6 yrs if Clarkson
    4 yrs of Bozak
    5 yrs of Jake

    • nordiques100 says:

you forgot 7 years of Kessel at 8 million

      • doorman says:

Kessel can be traded by the Leafs, IMO. He will obtain a good return for us if they trade him. For all everyone will say the dislike, he is a game breaker and proven top 5 scorer, those don’t come available all the time. Problem becomes once we get that centre we all crave, do we have a Sundin scenario all over agin trying to find that guy to play with him?

        • nordiques100 says:

Well i think Kessel will have trade value in the off-season, definitely not now with the heat on the team as we speak and given his current goal-scoring struggles.

I think someone will take Phaneuf too for a return, so long as the Leafs eat some salary. At 7 million per-season, its excessive, but what if it was 4.5 million per-season cap hit? There are worse blueliners making more money than that. So that may attract teams if the Leafs eat salary.

Lupul, maybe too eating a small percentage of salary, would too have value. He is signed for 3 more years, and if the cap hit were under 5 million, that too would have some value for teams. The problem with Lupul is not effort or production, its health. Some teams will take that chance. And, if he is back healthy in February, a team or 3 will take a look at a player like him for the playoffs.

Gardiner is young and locked up long term, that has value. He also carries more potential 100 fold than any player who has been placed on waivers this season. Teams aren’t necessarily lined up for him, but he would be a good piece to move this summer. Most likely in a packaged deal.

Bozak to me seems to be one who’d be packaged with Kessel somehow. But he carries a large salary as well. But he is a useful 2nd centre on a good team and not just the Leafs have needs at centre.

Franson will be the first to go. I think the track record of signings by Nonis is poor. Can’t let him keep another player who at the end of the day, despite decent point production for his position, has not helped the team win. That has been the issue with Toronto. Kessel, Phaneuf, Bozak etc, have been rewarded heavily for not helping the Leafs win. That should stop.

Kadri too is another summer trade chip. Like Gardiner, he has a lot of potential, that may not be filled here in Toronto. But, he could even be traded earlier than that because without a contract for next season, a team could find interest in him now, while he is financially affordable and ask questions later about future salary.

The players that will carry the highest trade value are JVR and Bernier, if they choose to move either of those 2. Its possible.

  4. LN91 says:

Thank god, that game was winnable!

    • 93killer93 says:

A few more games like this and we’ll be closer to Buffalo than we will be to the playoffs. I’m waiting for Kessel to get injured at the all star game.

      • LN91 says:

I wonder if Carlyle looked at this roster and said, “We have to play this way to have a chance at winning games”. I don’t know why, but I really like Erik Staal pummeling the puck at Phaneuf at the end.

Actually, I don’t think fans are throwing jerseys on the ice because the Leafs are losing…I think it’s because they want change. Fans are open to a rebuild, as they are tired of being sold a lemon.

        • 93killer93 says:

I completely agree. I think most fans would be able to accept the losing if it was because we were rebuilding. It’s managements willingness to accept mediocrity that i think pisses a lot of people of. Hopefully that changes now with Shanahan. But then again it is the Leafs.
6 of our next 7 games are against teams below us in the standings. if they continue to get blown out I think they write the season off and start unloading players. At least thats what I hope happens.

  5. nordiques100 says:

The Leafs are now 10th last.

My guess is the Leafs will go 14-21 the rest of the way, with some of the losses in OT.

The 14 wins will get them to 75 points and the OT losses may get them to 80 points or more.

I don’t think Edmonton or Buffalo will reach 80. They won’t reach 70 points IMO.

But, right now, Carolina and Arizona are 10 points back of Toronto, New Jersey is 5 back, Philly and Columbus 4 back, Ottawa 3 back, Minnesota 2 back.

Philly, Columbus, Ottawa and Minnesota and New Jersey all have a strong chance of passing Toronto which would put the Leafs into at least the bottom 5, upping their percentage in the lottery. Of that group, NJ and Ott stand the best chance of dying as hard if not harder than Toronto. I think Minnesota will bounce back some and same for the Jackets and Philly.

That is probably as good as its going to get.

  6. leafy says:

Is it possible Carlyle was smarter than we (I) thought?

He’s probably one of those autistic savants (eg, Rainman) that might sound like he’s dumb but can solve a rubiks cube mentally or do quantum mechanics equations for NASA.

    • nordiques100 says:

coaching isn’t the problem. Carlyle isnt really millions of times better than Horacek or vice versa.

The issue is the players. It always has been. Your top 2 players cannot be Kessel and Phaneuf. In fact, on a really good team, they aren’t even in the top 5 top players on a team, or at least shouldn’t be.

      • LN91 says:

They can be a top-5 player on a good team, but they cannot be the best players.

On a LA, I think Gaborik is a Top-5 player on that squad…But as we saw in NY, he cannot be the #1 guy. Jamie Benn is another good example, he needed a Seguin to really explode.

  7. Gambo says:

Realistically, i’d like the Leads to draft one of Zacha, Rantenen, or Crouse. They’re all 6’3″ or 6’4″ i believe and have the offensive potential that would fit well with Nylander in the future.

    • LN91 says:

I would like Dylan Strome, but the Leafs need to tumble a bit more.

However, I like Crouse for Nylander. Zacha will drop, he has not been very good in the O…And was terrible at the World Jrs.

    • nordiques100 says:

Strome is another. Him, Crouse i really like. Strome i prefer more since he is a centre. He could be like another Ryan Johansen.

With Hunter now with the Leafs, i am sure he has an eye on Marner. He is tiny, but there is a lot of skill there.

They will have the choice should they finish in the bottom 5 i think…..which i think they can get to.

      • Gambo says:

Strome and Marner will probably go in the top 5, I think the leafs will fall somewhere in the 6-10 range, probably 8 again. But yeah Strome would be ideal, I’d avoid going for another small forward like Marner though.

I think right now I like Rantenten the most out of the 3 I listed, but honestly I would be happy with any of them.

  8. doorman says:

So am I the only guy not wanting them to win the battle of Ontario tonight? lol Ottawa and Clb wins would be fantastic. I have never condoned losing, well tanking, but I just don’t see this changing unless this team keeps losing. I think as LeBrun has said, management saw this coming before it did. I feel for Horachek though who is a good coach yet going to get the shaft via association with losing team.
