Wake up call for penguins will only make them better
Okay so The penguins were eliminated by Montreal in game seven of round two. Yes they did play bad and yes they don’t have quality wingers or the best core of defense but they are a solid group and shouldn’t hit the panic button. I don’t know if and are the best of friends but off the ice problems shouldn’t effect their on ice play. And wasnt all there, my uncle Gilles Meloche his goalie coach Told me he was nervous before, during and even after the games, and that losing these series the way he did can be a source of motivation, especially if they meet again in the playoffs.
So here is what i am thinking they do in the off season to have a better overall season next year.
Free agents-

Alex useless
DEF
They should be around 45.5 M
so around 12 M in cap space
Now
Re sign –
– 1.5 M 1 year
He is getting old but i think he still has a year left in him, he’s a great leader, he won’t play as big of a role and won’t be hitting 23:00 in a game like he did in the playoffs. He will take a little cut from his 2 M.
Matt Cooke – 6 M 3 years, 2 M a Year
I’m not the biggest fan but he does his job, and the pens seem to like him. he will want more money seeing people like ott and neil getting that kind of money, but i think he’d be worth it.
And as for Gonchar i chose to let him go seeing Letang and Goligoski taking over him, and his price range will most likely be too high, around the same 5 M .
So that leaves you with :
Centers:
Crosby
Malkin
Staal
Talbot
Wingers:
Kennedy
Guerin
Dupuis
Cooke
Rupp
Godard
Letestu
Kunitz
DeF :
Letang
Orpik
Goligoski
Goalies :
Fleury
Johnson
Needs –
2 Top 4 Wingers
4 Top 6 Defensemen
with about 8.5 M in Cap space- 49 M
Next steps
At draft :
Trade:
Malkin, Rights to talk to Ponikarovski
To
Florida Panthers
For
2011 1st Round Pick
stats
67 GP, 28G, 48 A , 77 Pts
VS
Stats
65 GP, 20, 37 A, 57 Pts
Michael Frolik
82 GP, 21 G, 22 A, 43 Pts
Radek Dvorak
76 GP , 14 G, 18 A, 32 Pts
This is a good trade for both teams as pittsburgh gets more quality depth and florida gets a true Number one center and get that team to the next level.
Cap- 47.5 M – about 10 M available
Next Step-

Sign Tanguay 1.5 M 1 year
He’s had some good years and why not give him a try, he could put up the same numebers he did with montreal before he got injured. he finished this year with a low 10G and 27A for 37 Pts in 80 games.
Sign Anton Volchenkov 22.5 M 5 Years, 4.5 M a year
This is alot but he’s the type of defencemen you need, having both him and Orpik on a team is so usefull and scary for other teams to play against. He will be looking for a contract like that, similar to komisarek. in 64 games he finished with 4 G and 10 A for 14 Pts. but he is not known for his offensive play.
Trade :
4th Round Pick 2011
For
David Desharnais from Montreal
He’s a good player but wont fit in montreal since they are already small and especially seeing that he is a 5 foot 6 center he will not be able to move up unless he is traded. with the bulldogs in 60 games he finished with 27G 51A 78 Pts.
Sign Brett Lebda 1.4 M
Lebda is a reliable defensemen and could do the job as a 6th defencemen . At a reasonable contract
Sign Jay Leach .600 M
I personally love this player, he does nothing special but works hard and is a perfect 7 th defencemen in case of injury.
Here is how the team would look like in the end . To me is an improvement.
Kunitz Crosby Horton
Tanguay Staal Guerin
Dupuis Frolik Dvorak
Cook Talbot Kennedy/ Rupp/Godard
Tangradi Desharnais Letestu/ Jeffrey as a minor league top line. not bad
Orpik Letang
Goligoski Volchenkov
Lovejoy Lebda
Leach
Fleury
Johnson
Cap hit 55.5 M
If staal can reach his full potential he should get around 30 goals 70 point range, and horton playing with crosby could get him 40 goals.
Frolik should get about 20-25 goals 45-50 points, dvorak 10-15 goals 30-35 points. That could replace the points lost from malkin/gonchar, with a more complete team. And letang might keep his playoff streak going and get 15 goals.
What do you think?
