What's Left for Gainey

For many habs fans out there, Arnott was the answer. However he signed in Nashville. It was also speculated that Gainey offered Elias a contract but Elias elected to stay in New Jersey.

Besides Shanahan there are no longer any major UFAs that could contribute to Montreal. So to improve the habs Gainey will have to make a trade. With the signing of Huet, Aebisher’s future in Montreal is now uncertain. Gainey will either make a trade now to move the swiss goalie or wait until the trade deadline when a team becomes desperate for a starting goalie. With detroit in need of a starting goalie, aebisher becomes a potential candidate. However I believe the Wings will want a more proven Number 1 goalie to hold the fort.

Ribeiro and Zednik both underperformed and could see their years of being habs put to an end. However Gainey is a very patient GM and will not dump them for nobody. With both of these players stocks low right now, it would not be suprising if Gainey decided to keep them under Carbanneau.

Koivu’s future still remains somewhat “blurry” so Montreal badly needs to adress the centre position. Look to see Gainey move aebisher, and/or Zednik/Ribeiro in exchange for a centre.

Who is rumored to want Ribiero or Zednik? I still think that Ribiero is worth keeping.

Ribiero is wanted in l.a. to clean the stalls after kings and lakers games

We still need a second line center or, at the very least, a power forward. While I am going to agree that both Zednik or Ribero are offensively capable, they did not produce (hopefully the off-season will do them some good).

Looking at the UFAs and seeing what is still avaliable, there are only a couple large players left the could even be considered for what we need. Players like Eric Daze, Eric Lindros, and Bill Guerin remain, but these power forwards all come with considerable risk. I don’t see Gainey willing to take a chance on these players, unless he knows something we don’t, and we can’t reach into the minors since Guillaume Latendresse isn’t ready for the NHL.

I agree that Bob Gainey is a smart GM, but I (like many) had been hoping Arnott would be added. I guess we’ll see what happens in the coming weeks. In Gainey we trust……

I think the Habs may trade Zednik to the Stars for Robidas, but keep Ribiero.

If Huet gets off to a strong season they will attempt to trade Aebischer for offence.

As far as i’m concerned, MOntreal should worry about a defensemen, Souray cost us that game against Carolina when they made him look like a pylon. I love his shot from the point but if you even out all the shity goals he let up he isn’t that great of a player. I agree that we should give Ribeiro another year, he’s a young player that would be a sin to give away, although if we got a good deal for him I wouldn’t lose sleep over it.
