To add a player, Wings must subtract salary
The phone calls have started to come daily.
The NHL is in its final countdown to the Feb. 29 trade deadline, offering teams a last chance to try to improve before the playoffs. The Red Wings will be looking — but they have to be especially conscientious buyers.
For starters, they have very little in the way of salary-cap space. General manager Ken Holland told the Free Press last week that “if we do anything, from a cap standpoint, to bring in the type of player that would have a real impact, we would have to move somebody out.”
