Leafs not ready to consider a Richards for Phaneuf trade yet

Elliotte Friedman of sportsnet.ca writes … A Dion Phaneuf/Mike Richards trade matches financially, but, after suggesting the idea last weekend, my sense is the Kings would consider that, but Toronto wouldn’t, at least not yet.

Mike Richards has a cheaper salary and for a shorter term. Yeah it makes sense that the Leafs would “not consider”.

I wouldn’t dare consider moving a defenseman who can play over 20 minutes a night on any team for a 4th line center who isn’t guaranteed to play on the top 2 lines on the Leafs.

And what a freeup of salary and term. $1.25M for one less year. Oh my.

      • leafy says:

Even if that’s true (20 quality minutes?), it would move the Leafs closer to a lottery pick AND shed salary. Win-win.

The thing is Phaneuf has value. He is definitely overpaid but only by a million or so. Freeing up a million dollars in cap for an extremely over paid 4th line center is bad even if the intention was to tank.

Cody Franson is the top UFA defenseman available this year.

I think Johnny Boychuk I think is the top avail dman.

Phaneuf has positive value as does Kessel. These are better off season trades IMO. But I think we get more then most assume for these guys.

            • blaze says:

Ah yes Boychuk. Can’t see NYI not making a deal there. Point still stands there is no solution to the D in the FA pool.

I can’t help but feel like this team is so doomed we would become disenfranchised with McDavid by year 3 when we will still suck.

All the while Dion has a goddamn Cup ring playing 20 a night in LA.

    • LN91 says:

Who cares if Dion Phaneuf wins a cup with LA (If he goes there)?

He’s not the player that will lead them to another cup, he will be a secondary piece to it.

Geeze, why do you think the Leafs suck…Too much surrounding pieces (which, you seem to desire), and not enough star talent.

      • blaze says:

Yeah I get it you want to be the Oilers. Your fetish for prospects has you thinking Victor Loov will replace Dion.

The LA Kings borderline dynasty team thinks Dion can be a valued addition to the backend how is that possible?

        • LN91 says:

Not a fetish for prospects, just a fetish for potential talent that is better than this mediocre squad.

Yeah, for sure, if I was LA, I would want Dion to. But what the hell do you think the Kings are doing? Replacing Doughty with Dion?

No, the Kings will use Dion to anchor the second-pair D-Men. Once again, Dion is not a star player, he’s just a secondary piece on that squad. Toronto, on the other hand, used him as their best player when clearly he is miscast for the role.

Who would you rather want? Doughty & Kopitar or Kessel & Phaneuf.

Actually, you would probably pick the latter anyways.
