What’s wrong in Edmonton?

So what’s wrong?

I spoke with a team executive on an Eastern Conference team and this was his assessment:

Were the Oilers after Schneider?

One of the biggest stories this week with by Cory Schneider’s return to Vancouver. Could the Oilers have had him? I’ve always believed the price for the Canucks to send him there was very steep — one rumoured package was a first-round pick, a second-round pick and 21-year-old defenceman Martin Marincin. That’s a big ask, because teams are very careful about sending goalies to division opponents. Also, the Oilers had to know they had a great shot at Darnell Nurse, who they really liked.

How much and where will Ryan Smyth play for Edmonton Oilers?

As we survey the crowded UFA landscape, less than a month from training camps opening, and see warriors like Brenden Morrow and Dan Cleary out of work,  Ryan Smyth, who has the same engine as both of those UFA’s, but is considerably more evergreen at 37, must consider himself lucky to  have a contract at $2.25 million for this upcoming Edmonton Oilers’ season.

The question is how much work Smyth will get this season, as he closes in on 1200 career NHL games.

MacTavish promising change on Oilers’ blue line

The Edmonton Oilers are loaded on the blue-line, but general manger Craig MacTavish did not hesitate when Denis Grebeshkov wanted to give the NHL another shot after three years in the Kontinental Hockey League.

“I always liked Denis,” said MacTavish, who coached the Russian defenceman when he was the Oilers bench boss. Grebeshkov played for Edmonton from 2007-10.

The Oilers signed Grebeshkov, 29, to a one-year, one-way, $1.5-million contract earlier this month.

Three potential destinations for Miller

The Vancouver Canucks are not the only NHL club that is facing a peculiar situation when it comes to their starting goaltender.

Oilers interested in Kyle Clifford?

Looks like Hemsky will return to the Oilers

It still makes sense that Hemsky will find a better fit and a trade will happen…

If we put two and two together from Oilers GM Craig MacTavish’s interview with sports radio podcaster Brad Bartko, it looks like Ales Hemsky might just be an Edmonton Oilers hockey player in 2013-14 after all.

Ex-Leaf executive says the Oilers may be interested in Dion Phaneuf

Former Maple Leafs assistant general manager Bill Watters was interviewed on Oilers Now on Friday, and he had both an interesting rumour and some harsh words for Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf. In part, here’s what he had to say:

Dion Phaneuf should be dispatched as soon as they possibly can and the story I hear is that Edmonton’s interested and if they are tell [general manager Craig MacTavish] to take him and have fun with him. I find him to be the most overrated, undernourished hockey player in the history of the NHL and whoever made him the captain of the Maple Leafs should have been fired six years ago.
