Edmonton Oilers would jump at chance to acquire Shawn Matthias

If the Florida Panthers are moving veterans to cut payroll, and they consider Shawn Matthias a veteran of sorts, the Edmonton Oilers might be all over that. They’ve tried to get the six-foot-four, 220-pound centre before and were rebuffed.

Could the Leafs and Oilers swing a deal at some point?

Nonis said he hasn’t considered trading Jake Gardiner and doesn’t believe in trading young defencemen. “How many teams have made mistakes trading a young defencemen too soon?”

Are the Oilers and Sabres close to a blockbuster trade?

And just so you know, there was talk Wednesday afternoon that the Sabres were working on a deal with Edmonton that would send Ryan Miller or Thomas Vanek and possibly both to the Oilers in a package that would bring Nail Yakupov and more to Buffalo. Whether it actually happens is another story. But as it stood Wednesday, the two sides had considered, or were considering, a major swap.

Could the Oilers and Flyers swing a deal?

Oilers searching to upgrade thier goalie situation

Bob McKenzie: Devan Dubnyk’s sub-par performance on Saturday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs does not have Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish pushing the panic button, but it does have him reaching for the telephone.

Nail Yakupov scratched again for Oilers; agent debunks KHL departure rumor

Nail Yakupov, the Edmonton Oilers’ leading goal-scorer last season, was a healthy scratch for their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. He’ll be one again as they head to D.C. to face the Washington Capitals on Monday night.

Could the Oilers go after Miller?

So what does MacTavish do? Frankly the man looked like Kevin Lowe, his current boss, back in 2006 when Lowe, then GM, made do with a revolving door of  Jussi Markkanen (3.13 avg), Mike Morrison (2.83) and Ty Conklin (2.80) in net for most of the season before they got lucky and brought in Dwayne Roloson to save the day at the trade deadline.

Wanted by Edmonton Oilers: tough, mean third-pairing defenceman

The Edmonton Oilers are looking for a third pairing defenceman with some muscle and/or meanness.

What’s wrong in Edmonton?

So what’s wrong?

I spoke with a team executive on an Eastern Conference team and this was his assessment:

Were the Oilers after Schneider?

One of the biggest stories this week with by Cory Schneider’s return to Vancouver. Could the Oilers have had him? I’ve always believed the price for the Canucks to send him there was very steep — one rumoured package was a first-round pick, a second-round pick and 21-year-old defenceman Martin Marincin. That’s a big ask, because teams are very careful about sending goalies to division opponents. Also, the Oilers had to know they had a great shot at Darnell Nurse, who they really liked.
