No Discount Price for Nylander and Rangers ???

Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports that Michael Nylander is not interested in giving the Rangers “a home town discount” to stay in the big apple.

It is speculated that Nylander’s old agent had reached a three year contract with the Rangers for 3.75 million per year for 3 years. Nylanders new agent will be seeking more money … in the 4.5 million dollar range and as a result the Rangers will not be getting a bargain price to keep him under raps for the next few seasons. Nylander is set to become an UFA on July 1st.

Brooks indicated that he feels that Nylander is most likely worth between 4.25 and 5 million per season, too much if you ask us at HTR. It seems more logical for a team to target a big name player such as Gomez or Drury with 5 million plus dollars up in the air.

The summary provided is misrepresentative of the article. Larry Brooks says Nylander amy seek more after firing his agent, nothing about testing free agency.

4-5 million could easily be spent on better talent. Nylander is a solid center, but is East-West-South game can get very discouraging. Most centers who play with Jagr will have great years.

  3. Girardi46 says:

i personally do not think he is worth 4-5 mill per season.  The guy is aging, and his style of play frustrates the hell out of me even though he can set up some really nice plays… I would say go after a younger guy, guys like Gomez and Drury (my top pick)… or even infuse the youth in the team… these guys are gonna need the experience if they're gonna succeed.  Bringing them up for a few games and sending them back to the minors because they don't score 5 goals in 2 games isn't helping them.  They need the experience and time to create some chemistry.  I would love to see guys like Dubinsky and Immonen up full time, and Dawes deserves his shot to prove himself too.  I say let Nylander walk… the Rangers can fill his shoes elsewhere.

  4. Girardi46 says:

I agree…like I said in my post, his style of play can get frustrating

If he wants that kind of money…as much as I liked him last year, he can walk.  One of the reasons for his great play, was that he plays almost full time with Jagr.  Playing with Jagr opens up a lot of ice for him.  I don't see him duplicating that kind of success elsewhere, unless he plays with one of the top 3 or 4 wingers in the league.  If I had to spend that kind of money, I'd rather have Drury, who is a gamebreaker.  Gomez, I'm not big on.

    bring the swede to Detroit

  7. Girardi46 says:

Agreed.  Drury is my number one choice. He even said himself that he loves New York (the city) and loves playing in the Garden (but then again who doesn't) and if Jagr's words during the playoffs (when he said it was too early for Lundqvist to be making passes to Drury) are true it seems like Drury will be a main target for the Rangers. Bye Nylander, it's been fun.

  8. ranger_fan says:

New Yorks problems were when Jagr's leadership ability was questioned. Aaron Ward who from a leadership standpoint is kinda like Drury in that he is vocal, so I am not sure if thats the best route. If only Forsberg was healthy… but thats farfetched.

    As of right now:
    Hossa – Straka – Jagr
    Callahan – Avery – Shanahan
    Ortmeyer – Cullen – Prucha
    Hollweg – Betts – Dawes/Orr

Thats not too shabby and really shows Nylander isnt even needed. Sure it would be great to get Briere but I'm content with that look. Lets get some defense!

  9. Girardi46 says:

I like the lineup… but i still think the need for a top center is still there… I would love to see a new big name at center such as briere, gomez, or drury… maybe the Rangers could sign Nylander at a price another team is willing to pay him, and package Montoya into a trade… would be a pretty big trade.  I like Pock on defense, don't understand why he was sent up and down all season, I thought he was pretty steady and played well both defensively and offensively, and could be effective on the powerplay. Girardi is a definite future top pairing defensemen in my opinion, Malik is ok, can't argue with his plus minus although he is big slow and lazy, and takes horrible penalties… I'd send him away to whoever takes him for prospects.

    Defensive pairings:
    Mara – Roszival
    Tyutin – Girardi
    Pock – Baranka/Rachunek

if he really wants that much then let him go and sign Lang or Handzus and v. Kozlov. i would think you could get two of those guys for a total of 5 mil a year or less and that would help the team more then one good center
centers would look like: first line lang or handzus, second ling Kozlov, third line Cullen and fourth betts. i would like to them give immonen a try on the first line for while i think he could put up awesome numbers given the chance.

His heart and his passport might be swede, but his game is much more like a Czek now days.  The Rangers though are in the process of slowly weening themselves off Czek players, but then again trading Malik would probably quickly put an end to that line of thought.

  12. cecilturtle says:

I completely agree with you!  Actually I do not even think it's in the Rangers best interest to give Nylander $3.75 million over 3 years.  Maybe $3.75 million over 2 years, but not for 3 years.  I'm glad he wants more money and I hope another team "besides the Rangers" gives it to him.  Nylander is a great player and deserves as much money as he could get, but he is no longer the right fit for the direction the Rangers are now going.  Bring in Drury if able too and let the kids fill up the rest of the roster spots.  I'm surprised Slats offered such a long term contract  (especially to a 35 year old!!!) for that much money.  But even more surprised Nylander fired his agent and rejected the deal?  Nylander is going to be 35 years old next season, so his contract counts 100% against the cap for all three years no matter what, even if he retires or plays in Hartford.  Kind of hard for me to believe Slats would make this kind of offer to Nylander???  It would not surprise me one bit if we later find out the agent is making all this up and Sather only offer was a one year deal to Nylander and that is the real reason he was fired.  For a GM to offer over 4 million $$$ to an over 35 year old free agent in todays salary cap NHL, could almost be considered reckless!

  13. J-Man2020 says:

I would not sign Nylander for 4.5-5 million.  He isn't worth that much, he wouldn't get so many points if it wasn't for Jagr.  I would take him for 4 million or less that is it.  I would rather have Gomez and/or Drury for 5-6 million each.  I heard we will have 24 million to spend before we sign our free agents.  We should sign Lundqvist for a long term deal worth 4 million a season, Avery for a decently long deal worth 2 million a season, Prucha for a short term deal worth 750,000 a season, Shanahan for a one year deal worth 3.5 million, and Nylander if we can for 2 years worth 4 million a season.  Let Ortmeyer walk and bring up Dawes or Korpioski.  Let Isbister(stone hands) walk too.  If we sign Nylander we will have approximately 9.75 million to spend.  I would sign Gomez or Drury for the second line center position for 6 million.  If we don't sign Nylander then we will have approximately 13.75 million to spend.  I would sign Drury and/or Gomez or 6 million each or just one of them.  If we sign one of them then I would go after Comrie for the second line role for 3.5 million or I would bring up Dubinsky to center the second or third line.  We may go after a defenceman like Rivet or Stuart for depth too.  My team next year would look like this:

    With Nylander:

    Without Nylander:

Rozsival-Malik/Stuart or Rivet(only if we can buyout Malik or trade him)

  14. J-Man2020 says:

Lang, Handzus, and Kozlov suck.  They are washed up.  Lang is ok.  Handzus gets hurt and Kozlov isn't that good.  I would rather spend 5-6 million on one or two(if we don't sign Nylander) top centers like Drury, Gomez, and Briere.(I think he is going to cost 7 million though)  You can also get Comrie for the same money as Lang.  Comrie is better.

  15. BruMagnus says:

I like your second prediction of signing both Drury and Gomez.

  16. mundus80 says:

Kozlov will be what like maybe 2mill he has good size and plays smart, lang or handzus can make plays. briere will not be a good fit on the rangers, if he knows what good for him he will stay with buffalo. kozlov had only a few less points and a better +- then gomez. and for what like 3 mill less. yes handzus gets hurt but 8 points in 8 games is pretty good. nows the time to make an offer when it wont have to be much, he has a healthy season he will be worth allot. who do you think jagr would want to play with comire or lang?

  17. mundus80 says:

malik will have to be replaced with another Czech, do you think its chance they both are are from the same country that jagr is from? drury is good in the playoffs but not a number one center the rest or the time. and gomez is good but not worth what he will get next year if its more them 5. d-man is what the rangers should go for first. if they rangers want only one good center that plays well in the playoffs go after smyth. sign smyth, shany and nylander and one top line D and the rangers are in the finals next year.
